बालिशस्तु नरो नित्यं वैक्लव्यं योऽनुवर्तते। स मज्जत्यवशः शोके भाराक्रान्तेव नौर्जले
But a foolish man who always follows weakness, helplessly sinks into sorrow, like a boat weighed down in water.
एषोऽञ्जलिर्मया बद्धः प्रणयात् त्वां प्रसादये। पौरुषं श्रय शोकस्य नान्तरं दातुमर्हसि
With these hands joined in reverence, I beseech you out of affection; rely on your strength, do not give space to grief.
ये शोकमनुवर्तन्ते न तेषां विद्यते सुखम्। तेजश्च क्षीयते तेषां न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि
Those who follow grief find no happiness; their vigor diminishes. You should not grieve.
शोकेनाभिप्रपन्नस्य जीविते चापि संशयः। स शोकं त्यज राजेन्द्र धैर्यमाश्रय केवलम्
For one overwhelmed by sorrow, even life is uncertain; therefore, O king, abandon grief and rely solely on courage.
हितं वयस्यभावेन ब्रूहि नोपदिशामि ते। वयस्यतां पूजयन्मे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि
I speak these words as a friend, not instructing you; honoring our friendship, you should not grieve.
मधुरं सान्त्वितस्तेन सुग्रीवेण स राघवः। मुखमश्रुपरिक्लिन्नं वस्त्रान्तेन प्रमार्जयत्
Consoled with sweet words by Sugriva, Raghava wiped his tear-stained face with the edge of his garment.
प्रकृतिस्थस्तु काकुत्स्थः सुग्रीवचनात् प्रभुः। सम्परिष्वज्य सुग्रीवमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Restored to his nature by Sugriva's words, the lord Kakutstha embraced Sugriva and spoke these words.
कर्तव्यं यद् वयस्येन स्निग्धेन च हितेन च। अनुरूपं च युक्तं च कृतं सुग्रीव तत् त्वया
What ought to be done by a loving and well-intentioned friend, fitting and proper, you have done, Sugriva.
एष च प्रकृतिस्थोऽहमनुनीतस्त्वया सखे। दुर्लभो हीदृशो बन्धुरस्मिन् काले विशेषतः
And now, restored to my nature, I have been comforted by you, friend; such a companion is rare, especially in times like these.
किं तु यत्नस्त्वया कार्यो मैथिल्याः परिमार्गणे। राक्षसस्य च रौद्रस्य रावणस्य दुरात्मनः
But you must make every effort to search for Maithili, and for the cruel, evil-hearted demon Ravana.
मया च यदनुष्ठेयं विस्रब्धेन तदुच्यताम्। वर्षास्विव च सुक्षेत्रे सर्वं सम्पद्यते तव
Let whatever must be done by me be spoken freely; as in a fertile field during the rains, all will prosper for you.
मया च यदिदं वाक्यमभिमानात् समीरितम्। तत्त्वया हरिशार्दूल तत्त्वमित्युपधार्यताम्
And whatever words I have spoken out of pride, O tiger among monkeys, let them be understood by you as the truth.
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे न च वक्ष्ये कदाचन। एतत्ते प्रतिजानामि सत्येनैव शपाम्यहम्
I have never spoken a lie before, nor will I ever speak one; this I promise you, and I swear by truth itself.
ततः प्रहृष्टः सुग्रीवो वानरैः सचिवैः सह। राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रतिज्ञातं विशेषतः
Then Sugriva, delighted, together with his monkey ministers, heard Rāghava's words and especially his pledge.
एवमेकान्तसम्पृक्तौ ततस्तौ नरवानरौ। उभावन्योन्यसदृशं सुखं दुःखमभाषताम्
Thus, those two—the man and the monkey—closely united, spoke to each other of their joys and sorrows, each matching the other.
महानुभावस्य वचो निशम्य हरिर्नृपाणामधिपस्य तस्य। कृतं स मेने हरिवीरमुख्य- स्तदा च कार्यं हृदयेन विद्वान्
Hearing the words of that great-souled lord of men, the chief among monkeys considered the task as good as accomplished, understanding it in his heart.

Listen now to the eighth chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā section.
परितुष्टस्तु सुग्रीवस्तेन वाक्येन हर्षितः। लक्ष्मणस्याग्रजं शूरमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Sugrīva, greatly pleased and gladdened by those words, spoke to the heroic elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa as follows.
सर्वथाहमनुग्राह्यो देवतानां न संशयः। उपपन्नो गुणोपेतः सखा यस्य भवान् मम
Truly, I am especially favored by the gods—there is no doubt—since you, endowed with virtues, have become my friend.
शक्यं खलु भवेद् राम सहायेन त्वयानघ। सुरराज्यमपि प्राप्तुं स्वराज्यं किमुत प्रभो
Indeed, O faultless one, with your help, even the kingdom of the gods could be attained; what need to speak of my own kingdom, O lord?
सोऽहं सभाज्यो बन्धूनां सुहृदां चैव राघव। यस्याग्निसाक्षिकं मित्रं लब्धं राघववंशजम्
Thus, among my relatives and friends, I am honored, O descendant of Raghu, for I have gained as a friend, with fire as witness, one born in the Raghu lineage.
अहमप्यनुरूपस्ते वयस्यो ज्ञास्यसे शनैः। न तु वक्तुं समर्थोऽहं त्वयि आत्मगतान् गुणान्
I too am a fitting companion for you, and you will come to know this gradually; but I am not able to speak of my own qualities in your presence.
महात्मनां तु भूयिष्ठं त्वद्विधानां कृतात्मनाम्। निश्चला भवति प्रीतिर्धैर्यमात्मवतां वर
But among great souls like you, who are self-controlled, affection is steadfast, and courage is firm, O best among the self-possessed.
रजतं वा सुवर्णं वा शुभान्याभरणानि च। अविभक्तानि साधूनामवगच्छन्ति साधवः
Whether it is silver, gold, or beautiful ornaments, the virtuous recognize that such things are undivided among the good.
धनत्यागः सुखत्यागो देशत्यागोऽपि वानघ। वयस्यार्थे प्रवर्तन्ते स्नेहं दृष्ट्वा तथाविधम्
For the sake of a friend, O faultless one, people will give up wealth, comfort, even their homeland, when they see such affection.
तत् तथेत्यब्रवीद् रामः सुग्रीवं प्रियवादिनम्। लक्ष्मणस्याग्रतो लक्ष्म्या वासवस्येव धीमतः
Then Rāma, standing before Lakṣmaṇa and the wise Lakṣmī, replied to Sugrīva, who spoke kindly, saying, 'So be it.'
ततो रामं स्थितं दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम्। सुग्रीवः सर्वतश्चक्षुर्वने लोलमपातयत्
Then Sugrīva, seeing Rāma standing there and mighty Lakṣmaṇa, cast his restless gaze all around the forest.
स ददर्श ततः सालमविदूरे हरीश्वरः। सुपुष्पमीषत्पत्राढ्यं भ्रमरैरुपशोभितम्
Thereupon, the lord of monkeys saw a śāla tree not far away, richly adorned with blossoms and a few leaves, beautified by bees.
तस्यैकां पर्णबहुलां शाखां भङ्क्त्वा सुशोभिताम्। रामस्यास्तीर्य सुग्रीवो निषसाद सराघवः
Breaking off a single branch thick with leaves from that tree, Sugrīva spread it out for Rāma, and together with Rāghava, sat down.
तावासीनौ ततो दृष्ट्वा हनूमानपि लक्ष्मणम्। शालशाखां समुत्पाट्य विनीतमुपवेशयत्
Then Hanuman, seeing the two seated, also gently seated Lakshmana on a branch of the śāla tree that he had broken off.
