इदं तथ्यं मम वचस्त्वमवेहि च राघव। न शक्या सा जरयितुमपि सेन्द्रैः सुरासुरैः
Know this, Rāghava, my words are true; she cannot be worn down, not even by Indra and the gods or demons together.
तव भार्या महाबाहो भक्ष्यं विषकृतं यथा। त्यज शोकं महाबाहो तां कान्तामानयामि ते
Your wife, mighty-armed one, is like food mixed with poison—untouchable; give up your sorrow, great-armed one, I will bring your beloved to you.
अनुमानात् तु जानामि मैथिली सा न संशयः। ह्रियमाणा मया दृष्टा रक्षसा रौद्रकर्मणा
From inference I know without doubt that she is Maithilī; I saw her being carried away by that demon of cruel deeds.
क्रोशन्ती रामरामेति लक्ष्मणेति च विस्वरम्। स्फुरन्ती रावणस्याङ्के पन्नगेन्द्रवधूर्यथा
She cried out loudly, 'Rāma! Rāma!' and 'Lakṣmaṇa!' as she struggled in Rāvaṇa's lap, like the wife of the serpent king.
आत्मना पञ्चमं मां हि दृष्ट्वा शैलतले स्थितम्। उत्तरीयं तया त्यक्तं शुभान्याभरणानि च
When she saw me, standing on the mountain slope, she threw down her upper garment and her auspicious ornaments.
तान्यस्माभिर्गृहीतानि निहितानि च राघव। आनयिष्याम्यहं तानि प्रत्यभिज्ञातुमर्हसि
O Rāghava, those ornaments were taken and kept by us; I will bring them here, you should recognize them.
तमब्रवीत् ततो रामः सुग्रीवं प्रियवादिनम्। आनयस्व सखे शीघ्रं किमर्थं प्रविलम्बसे
Then Rāma spoke to Sugrīva, who spoke kindly: 'Bring them quickly, friend, why are you delaying?'
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवः शैलस्य गहनां गुहाम्। प्रविवेश ततः शीघ्रं राघवप्रियकाम्यया
Thus addressed, Sugrīva swiftly entered the deep cave of the mountain, desiring to please Rāghava.
उत्तरीयं गृहीत्वा तु स तान्याभरणानि च। इदं पश्येति रामाय दर्शयामास वानरः
Taking the upper garment and those ornaments, the monkey showed them to Rāma, saying, 'See, these.'
ततो गृहीत्वा वासस्तु शुभान्याभरणानि च। अभवद् बाष्पसंरुद्धो नीहारेणेव चन्द्रमाः
Then, taking the garment and the beautiful ornaments, he was choked with tears, like the moon veiled by mist.
सीतास्नेहप्रवृत्तेन स तु बाष्पेण दूषितः। हा प्रियेति रुदन् धैर्यमुत्सृज्य न्यपतत् क्षितौ
Overcome by tears arising from his love for Sītā, he cried out, 'Alas, my beloved!' abandoning his composure, and fell to the ground.
हृदि कृत्वा स बहुशस्तमलंकारमुत्तमम्। निशश्वास भृशं सर्पो बिलस्थ इव रोषितः
Holding those excellent ornaments to his heart again and again, he sighed deeply, like an enraged serpent in its hole.
अविच्छिन्नाश्रुवेगस्तु सौमित्रिं प्रेक्ष्य पार्श्वतः। परिदेवयितुं दीनं रामः समुपचक्रमे
With an unbroken flow of tears, Rāma, seeing Saumitri at his side, began to lament in distress.
पश्य लक्ष्मण वैदेह्या संत्यक्तं ह्रियमाणया। उत्तरीयमिदं भूमौ शरीराद् भूषणानि च
Look, Lakṣmaṇa, this upper garment and these ornaments, cast on the ground by Vaidehī as she was carried away.
शाद्वलिन्यां ध्रुवं भूम्यां सीतया ह्रियमाणया। उत्सृष्टं भूषणमिदं तथा रूपं हि दृश्यते
Surely, this ornament was dropped by Sītā as she was being taken, on the grassy earth; for its form appears so.
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण लक्ष्मणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। नाहं जानामि केयूरे नाहं जानामि कुण्डले
Thus addressed by Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa spoke: 'I do not recognize the armlets, nor do I know the earrings.'
नूपुरे त्वभिजानामि नित्यं पादाभिवन्दनात्। ततस्तु राघवो वाक्यं सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत्
But I do recognize the anklets, from always bowing at her feet. Then Rāghava spoke these words to Sugrīva.
ब्रूहि सुग्रीव कं देशं ह्रियन्ती लक्षिता त्वया। रक्षसा रौद्ररूपेण मम प्राणप्रिया हृता
Tell me, Sugrīva, in which region did you see my beloved, who was seized by a demon of terrible form?
क्व वा वसति तद् रक्षो महद् व्यसनदं मम। यन्निमित्तमहं सर्वान् नाशयिष्यामि राक्षसान्
Where does that demon dwell, who has brought me great suffering? Because of him, I will destroy all the Rākṣasas.
हरता मैथिलीं येन मां च रोषयता ध्रुवम्। आत्मनो जीवितान्ताय मृत्युद्वारमपावृतम्
By carrying off Maithilī and enraging me, he has surely opened the door to his own death.
मम दयिततमा हृता वनाद् रजनिचरेण विमथ्य येन सा। कथय मम रिपुं तमद्य वै प्लवगपते यमसंनिधिं नयामि
My dearest one was taken from the forest by that night-wandering demon, who tormented her; tell me today, O lord of monkeys, who that enemy is, whom I will send to the presence of Yama.

Let the seventh chapter be heard.
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो रामेणार्तेन वानरः। अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं सबाष्पं बाष्पगद्गदः
Thus addressed by the grieving Rāma, Sugrīva, the monkey, with joined palms and tears choking his voice, spoke these words.
न जाने निलयं तस्य सर्वथा पापरक्षसः। सामर्थ्यं विक्रमं वापि दौष्कुलेयस्य वा कुलम्
I do not know the whereabouts of that wicked demon, nor his abilities, valor, or the lineage of that evil-born one.
सत्यं तु प्रतिजानामि त्यज शोकमरिंदम। करिष्यामि तथा यत्नं यथा प्राप्स्यसि मैथिलीम्
But I truly promise you, O destroyer of foes, cast off your sorrow; I will exert myself so that you may regain Maithili.
रावणं सगणं हत्वा परितोष्यात्मपौरुषम्। तथास्मि कर्ता नचिराद् यथा प्रीतो भविष्यसि
Having slain Ravana and his followers, and satisfying my own prowess, I will act so that you will soon be pleased.
अलं वैक्लव्यमालम्ब्य धैर्यमात्मगतं स्मर। त्वद्विधानां न सदृशमीदृशं बुद्धिलाघवम्
Enough of this weakness; recall your inner courage. Such fickleness of mind is not fitting for one like you.
मयापि व्यसनं प्राप्तं भार्याविरहजं महत्। नाहमेवं हि शोचामि धैर्यं न च परित्यजे
I too have suffered a great misfortune from separation with my wife, yet I do not grieve in this way, nor do I abandon my resolve.
बाष्पमापतितं धैर्यान्निग्रहीतुं त्वमर्हसि। मर्यादां सत्त्वयुक्तानां धृतिं नोत्स्रष्टुमर्हसि
You ought to restrain the tears that have arisen, through your fortitude; you should not abandon the composure and endurance proper to the noble.
व्यसने वार्थकृच्छ्रे वा भये वा जीवितान्तगे। विमृशंश्च स्वयाबुद्ध्या धृतिमान् नावसीदति
In adversity, distress, fear, or at the end of life, one who reflects with his own wisdom and is steadfast does not sink.
