सर्वं मे शंस भगवन् कस्याश्रमपदं त्विदम् । संप्राप्ता यत्र ते पापा ब्रह्मघ्ना दुष्टचारिणः ॥१-२८-
Tell me everything, O revered one: whose hermitage is this, where those wicked, sinful slayers of Brahmins came upon you?
तव यज्ञस्य विघ्नाय दुरात्मानो महामुने । भगवंस्तस्य को देशः सा यत्र तव याज्ञिकी ॥१-२८-
To obstruct your sacrifice, O great sage, those evil-minded ones came; O revered one, what is that place where your sacrificial rites are performed?

Hear now the twenty-ninth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Bāla Kāṇḍa.
अथ तस्याप्रमेयस्य वचनं परिपृच्छतः । विश्वामित्रो महातेजा व्याख्यातुमुपचक्रमे ॥१-२९-
Then, as he asked about the immeasurable one, the radiant Vishvamitra began to explain.
इह राम महाबाहो विष्णुर्देवनमस्कृतः । वर्षाणि सुबहूनीह तथा युगशतानि च ॥१-२९-
Here, O Rama of mighty arms, Vishnu, revered by the gods, spent many years and hundreds of ages.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राम कश्यपोग्निसमप्रभः । अदित्या सहितो राम दीप्यमान इवौजसा ॥१-२९-
Meanwhile, O Rama, Kashyapa, radiant as fire, together with Aditi, shone with energy.
देवीसहायो भगवान् दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रकम् । व्रतं समाप्य वरदं तुष्टाव मधुसूदनम् ॥१-२९-
The blessed one, accompanied by the goddess, completed a divine vow for a thousand years, and praised Madhusudana, the bestower of boons.
तपोमयं तपोराशिं तपोमूर्तिं तपात्मकम् । तपसा त्वां सुतप्तेन पश्यामि पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥१-२९-
I see you, the supreme person, composed of austerity, the heap of austerity, the embodiment of austerity, whose essence is austerity, by my well-performed austerity.
शरीरे तव पश्यामि जगत् सर्वमिदं प्रभो । त्वमनादिरनिर्देश्यस्त्वामहं शरणं गतः ॥१-२९-
In your body, O Lord, I see this entire world; you are without beginning and beyond description; I have taken refuge in you.
तमुवाच हरिः प्रीतः कश्यपं गतकल्मषम् । वरं वरय भद्रं ते वरार्होऽसि मतो मम ॥१-२९-
Hari, pleased, addressed Kashyapa, freed from sin: 'Choose a boon, may good come to you; you are worthy of a boon and dear to me.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य मारीचः कश्यपोऽब्रवीत् । अदित्या देवतानां च मम चैवानुयाचितम् ॥१-२९-
Hearing those words, Maricha Kashyapa spoke: 'Aditi, the gods, and I have requested this together.'
वरं वरद सुप्रीतो दातुमर्हसि सुव्रत । पुत्रत्वं गच्छ भगवन्नदित्या मम चानघ ॥१-२९-
O bestower of boons, supremely pleased, you are worthy to grant a boon; O steadfast one, let this sage, sinless one, become my son, and also the son of Aditi.
भ्राता भव यवीयांस्त्वं शक्रस्यासुरसूदन । शोकार्तानां तु देवानां साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१-२९-
Become the younger brother of Indra, O slayer of asuras; you ought to assist the gods who are afflicted by sorrow.

Listen to the thirtieth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Bāla Kāṇḍa.
अथ तौ देशकालज्ञौ राजपुत्रावरिंदमौ । देशे काले च वाक्यज्ञावब्रूतां कौशिकं वचः ॥१-३०-
Then those two princes, foremost among men, who knew the proper place and time, and were skilled in speech, spoke these words to Kauśika.
भगवञ्छ्रोतुमिच्छावो यस्मिन् काले निशाचरौ । संरक्षणीयौ तौ ब्रूहि नातिवर्तेत तत्क्षणम् ॥१-३०-
O venerable one, we wish to hear at what time the night-roving demons must be protected; tell us, so that we do not miss that moment.
एवं ब्रुवाणौ काकुत्स्थौ त्वरमाणौ युयुत्सया । सर्वे ते मुनयः प्रीताः प्रशशंसुर्नृपात्मजौ ॥१-३०-
Thus spoke the two sons of Kakutstha, eager and hastening for battle; all the sages, delighted, praised the princes.
अद्यप्रभृति षड्रात्रं रक्षतां राघवौ युवाम् । दीक्षां गतो ह्येष मुनिर्मौनित्वं च गमिष्यति ॥१-३०-
From today for six nights, you two Raghavas must guard; for this sage has undertaken a vow and will observe silence.
तौ तु तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रौ यशस्विनौ । अनिद्रं षडहोरात्रं तपोवनमरक्षताम् ॥१-३०-
Hearing those words, the illustrious princes, sleepless for six days and nights, protected the hermitage.
उपासांचक्रतुर्वीरौ यत्तौ परमधन्विनौ । ररक्षतुर्मुनिवरं विश्वामित्रमरिंदमौ ॥१-३०-
Those two mighty warriors, skilled archers, attended vigilantly and protected the great sage Viśvāmitra, destroyer of foes.
अथ काले गते तस्मिन् षष्ठेऽहनि तदागते । सौमित्रिमब्रवीद् रामो यत्तो भव समाहितः ॥१-३०-
When the sixth day had passed and that time arrived, Rāma spoke to Saumitri: 'Be alert and attentive.'
रामस्यैवं ब्रुवाणस्य त्वरितस्य युयुत्सया । प्रजज्वाल ततो वेदिः सोपाध्यायपुरोहिता ॥१-३०-
As Rāma spoke thus, eager and ready for battle, the altar blazed forth, with teachers and priests present.
सदर्भचमसस्रुक्का स समित्कुसुमोच्चया । विश्वामित्रेण सहिता वेदिर्जज्वाल सर्त्विजा ॥१-३०-
The altar, adorned with darbha grass, ladles, and vessels, and heaps of sacrificial flowers, together with Viśvāmitra and the officiating priests, blazed brightly.
मन्त्रवच्च यथान्यायं यज्ञोऽसौ सम्प्रवर्तते । आकाशे च महाञ्छ्ब्दः प्रादुरासीद् भयानकः ॥१-३०-
The sacrifice proceeded according to the prescribed rites and mantras; then a great and terrifying sound arose in the sky.
आवार्य गगनं मेघो यथा प्रावृषि दृश्यते । तथा मायां विकुर्वाणौ राक्षसावभ्यधावताम् ॥१-३०-
A cloud covered the sky, as is seen in the rainy season; so too, the two rākṣasas, employing their magic, rushed forward.
मारीचश्च सुबाहुश्च तयोरनुचरास्तथा । आगम्य भीमसंकाशा रुधिरौघानवासृजन् ॥१-३०-
Mārīca and Subāhu, along with their followers, fierce as thunderclouds, arrived and poured down streams of blood.
ताम् तेन रुधिरौघेण वेदीं वीक्ष्य समुक्षिताम् । सहसाभिद्रुतो रामस्तानपश्यत् ततो दिवि ॥१-३०-
Seeing the altar drenched with that torrent of blood, Rāma swiftly rushed forward and saw them in the sky.
तावापतन्तौ सहसा दृष्ट्वा राजीवलोचनः । लक्ष्मणं त्वभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१-३०-
Seeing those two suddenly descending, the lotus-eyed prince looked at Lakṣmaṇa and spoke these words.
पश्य लक्ष्मण दुर्वृत्तान् राक्षसान् पिशिताशनान् । मानवास्त्रसमाधूताननिलेन यथा घनान् ॥१-३०-
Look, Lakṣmaṇa, at these wicked rākṣasas, eaters of flesh, driven by the force of the mānava missile, just as clouds are scattered by the wind.
करिष्यामि न संदेहो नोत्सहे हन्तुमीदृशान् । इत्युक्त्वा वचनं रामश्चापे संधाय वेगवान् ॥१-३०-
I will do it, there is no doubt; yet I cannot bring myself to kill such as these. Having spoken thus, swift Rama readied his bow.
