तस्यायं पूर्वजः पुत्रस्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः। सुग्रीवं वानरेन्द्रं तु रामः शरणमागतः
His eldest son, renowned in the three worlds, Rama, has come to take refuge with Sugriva, the king of the monkeys.
शोकाभिभूते रामे तु शोकार्ते शरणं गते। कर्तुमर्हति सुग्रीवः प्रसादं सह यूथपैः
When Rāma, overwhelmed by grief and seeking refuge in his sorrow, has come, Sugrīva ought to show him favor together with the leaders of his troop.
एवं ब्रुवाणं सौमित्रिं करुणं साश्रुपातनम्। हनूमान् प्रत्युवाचेदं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः
To the compassionate Saumitri, who spoke thus with tears falling, Hanumān, skilled in speech, replied these words.
ईदृशा बुद्धिसम्पन्ना जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः। द्रष्टव्या वानरेन्द्रेण दिष्ट्या दर्शनमागताः
Men endowed with such wisdom, who have conquered anger and their senses, are indeed fortunate to be seen by the king of the monkeys.
स हि राज्याश्च विभ्रष्टः कृतवैरश्च वालिना। हृतदारो वने त्रस्तो भ्रात्रा विनिकृतो भृशम्
For he has been deprived of his kingdom, made an enemy by Vāli, his wife taken, terrified in the forest, and grievously wronged by his brother.
करिष्यति स साहाय्यं युवयोर्भास्करात्मजः। सुग्रीवः सह चास्माभिः सीतायाः परिमार्गणे
That son of the Sun, Sugrīva, together with us, will surely assist you both in searching for Sītā.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा हनुमान् श्लक्ष्णं मधुरया गिरा। बभाषे साधु गच्छामः सुग्रीवमिति राघवम्
Having spoken thus with gentle and sweet words, Hanumān said, 'Let us go to Sugrīva,' to Rāghava.
एवं ब्रुवन्तं धर्मात्मा हनूमन्तं स लक्ष्मणः। प्रतिपूज्य यथान्यायमिदं प्रोवाच राघवम्
Lakṣmaṇa, the righteous one, honored Hanumān as was proper, and then spoke these words to Rāghava.
कपिः कथयते हृष्टो यथायं मारुतात्मजः। कृत्यवान् सोऽपि सम्प्राप्तः कृतकृत्योऽसि राघव
The monkey, the son of the Wind, speaks joyfully as he ought; he has come, having fulfilled his duty, and you, Rāghava, have accomplished your purpose.
प्रसन्नमुखवर्णश्च व्यक्तं हृष्टश्च भाषते। नानृतं वक्ष्यते वीरो हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः
With a cheerful face and clear delight, Hanumān, the son of the Wind, this hero, will not speak falsehood.
ततः स सुमहाप्राज्ञो हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। जगामादाय तौ वीरौ हरिराजाय राघवौ
Then Hanumān, the supremely wise son of the Wind, took those two heroes, the Rāghavas, to the king of the monkeys.
भिक्षुरूपं परित्यज्य वानरं रूपमास्थितः। पृष्ठमारोप्य तौ वीरौ जगाम कपिकुञ्जरः
Casting off the form of a mendicant and assuming his monkey shape, the mighty monkey lifted the two heroes onto his back and departed.
स तु विपुलयशाः कपिप्रवीरः पवनसुतः कृतकृत्यवत् प्रहृष्टः। गिरिवरमुरुविक्रमः प्रयातः स शुभमतिः सह रामलक्ष्मणाभ्याम्
That foremost of monkeys, famed and accomplished, the son of the Wind, rejoicing, possessing great strength like a mountain, set out with Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, his mind intent on good.

Hear now the fifth sarga. Thus ends the fifth sarga in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
ऋष्यमूकात् तु हनुमान् गत्वा तं मलयं गिरिम्। आचचक्षे तदा वीरौ कपिराजाय राघवौ
Hanumān, departing from Ṛśyamūka, went to that Malaya mountain and announced to the monkey king the arrival of the two heroes, the Rāghavas.
अयं रामो महाप्राज्ञ सम्प्राप्तो दृढविक्रमः। लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा रामोऽयं सत्यविक्रमः
This is Rāma, of great wisdom and firm valor, who has arrived with his brother Lakṣmaṇa; this Rāma is truly steadfast in his courage.
इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जातो रामो दशरथात्मजः। धर्मे निगदितश्चैव पितुर्निर्देशकारकः
Born in the lineage of the Ikṣvākus, Rāma is the son of Daśaratha, renowned for righteousness and obedient to his father's command.
राजसूयाश्वमेधैश्च वह्निर्येनाभितर्पितः। दक्षिणाश्च तथोत्सृष्टा गावः शतसहस्रशः
By him, the sacred fires were duly satisfied with Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices, and thousands upon thousands of cows were generously given as gifts.
तस्यास्य वसतोऽरण्ये नियतस्य महात्मनः। रावणेन हृता भार्या स त्वां शरणमागतः
While this great soul was dwelling in the forest, his wife was abducted by Rāvaṇa; now he has come to you for refuge.
भवता सख्यकामौ तौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। प्रगृह्य चार्चयस्वैतौ पूजनीयतमावुभौ
You should honor those two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, who desire friendship with you; receive them and worship them, for both are most worthy of reverence.
श्रुत्वा हनूमतो वाक्यं सुग्रीवो वानराधिपः। दर्शनीयतमो भूत्वा प्रीत्योवाच च राघवम्
Hearing Hanuman's words, Sugriva, king of the monkeys, became most presentable and, with affection, spoke to Rama.
भवान् धर्मविनीतश्च सुतपाः सर्ववत्सलः। आख्याता वायुपुत्रेण तत्त्वतो मे भवद्गुणाः
You are disciplined in righteousness, devoted to austerity, and affectionate to all; Hanuman, son of the wind, has told me truthfully of your virtues.
तन्ममैवैष सत्कारो लाभश्चैवोत्तमः प्रभो। यत्त्वमिच्छसि सौहार्दं वानरेण मया सह
Therefore, this honor and great gain are mine, O lord, that you desire friendship with me, a monkey.
रोचते यदि मे सख्यं बाहुरेष प्रसारितः। गृह्यतां पाणिना पाणिर्मर्यादा बध्यतां ध्रुवा
If my friendship pleases you, here is my arm extended; let our hands be joined, and let the bond of alliance be firmly established.
एतत् तु वचनं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवस्य सुभाषितम्। सम्प्रहृष्टमना हस्तं पीडयामास पाणिना
Hearing Sugriva's well-spoken words, Rama, with a delighted heart, grasped Sugriva's hand with his own.
हृष्टः सौहृदमालम्ब्य पर्यष्वजत पीडितम्। ततो हनूमान् संत्यज्य भिक्षुरूपमरिंदमः
Joyful, embracing the bond of friendship, Sugriva hugged Rama tightly; then Hanuman, conqueror of foes, abandoned his ascetic form.
काष्ठयोः स्वेन रूपेण जनयामास पावकम्। दीप्यमानं ततो वह्निं पुष्पैरभ्यर्च्य सत्कृतम्
In his own form, he produced fire from two wooden sticks; then, honoring the blazing fire with flowers, he worshipped it.
तयोर्मध्ये तु सुप्रीतो निदधौ सुसमाहितः। ततोऽग्निं दीप्यमानं तौ चक्रतुश्च प्रदक्षिणम्
With great delight, he placed the fire between them; then, both circled the blazing fire in reverence.
सुग्रीवो राघवश्चैव वयस्यत्वमुपागतौ। ततः सुप्रीतमनसौ तावुभौ हरिराघवौ
Sugriva and Rama thus entered into friendship; then, both the monkey and the prince, with hearts full of joy,
अन्योन्यमभिवीक्षन्तौ न तृप्तिमभिजग्मतुः। त्वं वयस्योऽसि हृद्यो मे ह्येकं दुःखं सुखं च नौ
Gazed upon each other, unable to be satisfied; you are my dear friend, and from now on, our happiness and sorrow are one.
