Understanding the words of the great-souled Sugrīva, Hanuman leapt from Mount Ṛṣyamūka to where the two descendants of Raghu were.
Abandoning his monkey form, Hanuman, son of the Wind, then assumed the form of a mendicant, acting with cunning intent.
He addressed those two heroes, praised them as was fitting, and, honoring them according to custom, Hanuman, the best of monkeys, spoke.
He spoke these words as he wished, to those gentle and truly valiant ones, ascetics of firm vows, resembling royal sages and gods.
How have you two, of splendid appearance, come to this place, frightening the herds of deer and other forest-dwellers?
You two, energetic, are looking all around at the trees growing on the banks of the Pampā, enhancing the beauty of this river with its pure waters.
Who are you two, patient and golden-hued, wearing bark garments, sighing deeply, with splendid arms, troubling these creatures?
These two heroes, with the gaze of lions, endowed with immense strength and valor, have taken up bows resembling Indra's bow, destroyers of enemies.
They are radiant, handsome, and of noble form, possessing the might of the best of bulls, with arms like the trunks of elephants, resplendent, foremost among men.
By your radiance, the lord of mountains himself is illuminated; worthy of kingship, equal to immortals, how have you come to this land?
These two heroes, with eyes like lotus petals, wearing matted locks, alike in every way, seem as if they have come here from the world of the gods.
As if by chance, the moon and sun have arrived together on earth; these two heroic men, broad-chested, appear in the form of men but with the likeness of gods.
With lion-like shoulders, great energy, like two proud bulls in rut, their long and well-shaped arms resemble iron clubs.
Worthy of all ornaments, why are they not adorned? I consider both of them fit to protect this earth.
The whole earth, with its forests and oceans, adorned by the Vindhya and Meru mountains; and these bows, beautiful, smooth, and finely decorated.
They shine like Indra's thunderbolt adorned with gold; their quivers, full of sharp arrows, are pleasing to behold.
Filled with terrible, life-ending, blazing arrows like serpents, their great, broad quivers are adorned with refined gold.
These two swords shine like released serpents; why do you not speak to me as I address you thus?
There is a righteous one named Sugriva, a foremost monkey, a hero cast out by his brother, who wanders the world in sorrow.
Sent by that great-souled Sugriva, I have come; I am Hanuman by name, chief among the monkeys.
That righteous Sugriva desires friendship with you both; know me as his minister, Hanuman, son of the wind.
Disguised in the form of an ascetic for Sugriva's sake, I have come here from Rishyamuka, moving as I wish, acting as I please.
Having spoken thus, Hanuman, skilled in words and eloquent, said nothing further to the two heroes, Rama and Lakshmana.
Hearing these words, Rama, his face beaming with joy, spoke to Lakshmana, his illustrious brother standing at his side.
This is the minister of the monkey king Sugriva, the great-souled one; he has come here to me, whom Sugriva seeks.
Saumitri addressed the monkey, Sugriva's minister, who was skilled in speech, with gentle words filled with affection, O subduer of foes.
Such speech cannot be uttered by one untrained in the Rig Veda, nor by one who does not hold the Yajur Veda, nor by one ignorant of the Sama Veda.
Surely, he has thoroughly studied grammar in many ways; though he speaks much, not a single improper word is found.
No flaw is discerned in his mouth, eyes, forehead, or brows, nor in any other feature at all.
His speech is concise, clear, unhesitating, unwavering, comes from the chest and throat, and is delivered in a moderate tone.
