आप्लवन्तो हरिवराः सर्वतस्तं महागिरिम्। मृगमार्जारशार्दूलांस्त्रासयन्तो ययुस्तदा
The excellent monkeys, leaping all around that great mountain, frightened the deer, cats, and tigers as they went.
ततः सुग्रीवसचिवाः पर्वतेन्द्रे समाहिताः। संगम्य कपिमुख्येन सर्वे प्राञ्जलयः स्थिताः
Then Sugrīva's counselors, gathered with the chief monkey, stood together on the lordly mountain, all with joined palms.
ततस्तु भयसंत्रस्तं वालिकिल्बिषशङ्कितम्। उवाच हनुमान् वाक्यं सुग्रीवं वाक्यकोविदः
Then Hanumān, skilled in speech, addressed Sugrīva, who was terrified and suspicious of Vāli's wrongdoing.
सम्भ्रमस्त्यज्यतामेष सर्वैर्वालिकृते महान्। मलयोऽयं गिरिवरो भयं नेहास्ति वालिनः
Let this great anxiety about Vāli be abandoned by all; this Malaya mountain is excellent, and there is no danger from Vāli here.
यस्मादुद्विग्नचेतास्त्वं विद्रुतो हरिपुङ्गव। तं क्रूरदर्शनं क्रूरं नेह पश्यामि वालिनम्
Because you, O foremost monkey, have fled in fear, I do not see that cruel-looking, cruel Vāli here.
यस्मात् तव भयं सौम्य पूर्वजात् पापकर्मणः। स नेह वाली दुष्टात्मा न ते पश्याम्यहं भयम्
Because your fear, gentle one, arises from the evil deeds of your elder, that wicked-hearted Vāli is not here; I do not perceive any danger for you.
अहो शाखामृगत्वं ते व्यक्तमेव प्लवङ्गम। लघुचित्ततयाऽऽत्मानं न स्थापयसि यो मतौ
Ah, your monkey nature is clearly evident, O leaping one; due to your fickle mind, you do not keep yourself steady in thought.
बुद्धिविज्ञानसम्पन्न इङ्गितैः सर्वमाचर। नह्यबुद्धिं गतो राजा सर्वभूतानि शास्ति हि
Endowed with intelligence and discernment, act according to signs in all matters; for a king who lacks wisdom cannot rule all beings.
सुग्रीवस्तु शुभं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सर्वं हनूमतः। ततः शुभतरं वाक्यं हनूमन्तमुवाच ह
Sugrīva, having heard all the auspicious words of Hanumān, then spoke even more auspicious words to Hanumān.
दीर्घबाहू विशालाक्षौ शरचापासिधारिणौ। कस्य न स्याद् भयं दृष्ट्वा ह्येतौ सुरसुतोपमौ
With long arms and wide eyes, bearing bow, arrows, and sword—who would not feel fear upon seeing these two, who resemble the sons of the gods?
वालिप्रणिहितावेव शङ्केऽहं पुरुषोत्तमौ। राजानो बहुमित्राश्च विश्वासो नात्र हि क्षमः
I suspect these two excellent men have been sent by Vāli; even with kings who have many allies, trust is not appropriate here.
अरयश्च मनुष्येण विज्ञेयाश्छद्मचारिणः। विश्वस्तानामविश्वस्ताश्छिद्रेषु प्रहरन्त्यपि
Enemies who act in disguise must be recognized by a man; those who are not trusted by the trusting strike even at points of weakness.
कृत्येषु वाली मेधावी राजानो बहुदर्शिनः। भवन्त परहन्तारस्ते ज्ञेयाः प्राकृतैर्नरैः
Vāli is wise in his actions, and kings are far-seeing; you must recognize those who are destroyers of others, even if they appear to be ordinary men.
तौ त्वया प्राकृतेनेव गत्वा ज्ञेयौ प्लवंगम। इङ्गितानां प्रकारैश्च रूपव्याभाषणेन च
Therefore, you must approach and discern them as if you were an ordinary monkey, by observing their gestures, manner, and speech.
लक्षयस्व तयोर्भावं प्रहृष्टमनसौ यदि। विश्वासयन् प्रशंसाभिरिङ्गितैश्च पुनः पुनः
Observe their disposition—if their hearts are joyful—by repeatedly winning their trust with praise and by reading their gestures.
ममैवाभिमुखं स्थित्वा पृच्छ त्वं हरिपुङ्गव। प्रयोजनं प्रवेशस्य वनस्यास्य धनुर्धरौ
Standing before me, you should ask, O foremost of monkeys, what purpose these two bowmen have in entering this forest.
शुद्धात्मानौ यदि त्वेतौ जानीहि त्वं प्लवङ्गम। व्याभाषितैर्वा रूपैर्वा विज्ञेया दुष्टतानयोः
If these two are pure in heart, you must discern it, O monkey, either by their speech or by their appearance; the wickedness of people is to be recognized.
इत्येवं कपिराजेन संदिष्टो मारुतात्मजः। चकार गमने बुद्धिं यत्र तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
Thus instructed by the monkey king, Hanuman, son of the Wind, resolved to go to where Rama and Lakshmana were.
तथेति सम्पूज्य वचस्तु तस्य कपेः सुभीतस्य दुरासदस्य। महानुभावो हनुमान् ययौ तदा स यत्र रामोऽतिबली सलक्ष्मणः
Having said, 'So be it,' and honoring the words of that wise and formidable monkey, the mighty Hanuman then went to where Rama, strong and accompanied by Lakshmana, was.

कपिरूपं परित्यज्य हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः। भिक्षुरूपं ततो भेजे शठबुद्धितया कपिः
Abandoning his monkey form, Hanuman, son of the Wind, then assumed the form of a mendicant, acting with cunning intent.
आबभाषे च तौ वीरौ यथावत् प्रशशंस च। सम्पूज्य विधिवद् वीरौ हनुमान् वानरोत्तमः
He addressed those two heroes, praised them as was fitting, and, honoring them according to custom, Hanuman, the best of monkeys, spoke.
उवाच कामतो वाक्यं मृदु सत्यपराक्रमौ। राजर्षिदेवप्रतिमौ तापसौ संशितव्रतौ
He spoke these words as he wished, to those gentle and truly valiant ones, ascetics of firm vows, resembling royal sages and gods.
देशं कथमिमं प्राप्तौ भवन्तौ वरवर्णिनौ। त्रासयन्तौ मृगगणानन्यांश्च वनचारिणः
How have you two, of splendid appearance, come to this place, frightening the herds of deer and other forest-dwellers?
पम्पातीररुहान् वृक्षान् वीक्षमाणौ समन्ततः। इमां नदीं शुभजलां शोभयन्तौ तरस्विनौ
You two, energetic, are looking all around at the trees growing on the banks of the Pampā, enhancing the beauty of this river with its pure waters.
धैर्यवन्तौ सुवर्णाभौ कौ युवां चीरवाससौ। निःश्वसन्तौ वरभुजौ पीडयन्ताविमाः प्रजाः
Who are you two, patient and golden-hued, wearing bark garments, sighing deeply, with splendid arms, troubling these creatures?
सिंहविप्रेक्षितौ वीरौ महाबलपराक्रमौ। शक्रचापनिभे चापे गृहीत्वा शत्रुनाशनौ
These two heroes, with the gaze of lions, endowed with immense strength and valor, have taken up bows resembling Indra's bow, destroyers of enemies.
श्रीमन्तौ रूपसम्पन्नौ वृषभश्रेष्ठविक्रमौ। हस्तिहस्तोपमभुजौ द्युतिमन्तौ नरर्षभौ
They are radiant, handsome, and of noble form, possessing the might of the best of bulls, with arms like the trunks of elephants, resplendent, foremost among men.
प्रभया पर्वतेन्द्रोऽसौ युवयोरवभासितः। राज्यार्हावमरप्रख्यौ कथं देशमिहागतौ
By your radiance, the lord of mountains himself is illuminated; worthy of kingship, equal to immortals, how have you come to this land?
