उत्साहो बलवानार्य नास्त्युत्साहात् परं बलम्। सोत्साहस्य हि लोकेषु न किंचिदपि दुर्लभम्
Energy is powerful, noble one; there is no strength greater than energy. For the energetic, nothing in the world is difficult to obtain.
उत्साहवन्तः पुरुषा नावसीदन्ति कर्मसु। उत्साहमात्रमाश्रित्य प्रतिलप्स्याम जानकीम्
Men endowed with energy do not falter in their actions. Relying solely on energy, we shall recover Jānakī.
त्यजतां कामवृत्तत्वं शोकं संन्यस्य पृष्ठतः। महात्मानं कृतात्मानमात्मानं नावबुध्यसे
Abandoning the ways of desire and casting grief behind you, you do not recognize yourself, the great-souled, self-controlled one.
एवं सम्बोधितस्तेन शोकोपहतचेतनः। त्यज्य शोकं च मोहं च रामो धैर्यमुपागमत्
Thus addressed by him, Rāma, whose mind was afflicted by grief, set aside his sorrow and delusion, and regained his composure.
सोऽभ्यतिक्रामदव्यग्रस्तामचिन्त्यपराक्रमः। रामः पम्पां सुरुचिरां रम्यां पारिप्लवद्रुमाम्
That Rāma, of unfathomable prowess, undisturbed, crossed the beautiful Pampā, lovely with trees growing along its banks.
निरीक्षमाणः सहसा महात्मा सर्वं वनं निर्झरकन्दरं च। उद्विग्नचेताः सह लक्ष्मणेन विचार्य दुःखोपहतः प्रतस्थे
The great-souled one, suddenly surveying the entire forest with its waterfalls and caves, his heart troubled, set out with Lakṣmaṇa, weighed down by sorrow.
तं मत्तमातङ्गविलासगामी गच्छन्तमव्यग्रमना महात्मा। स लक्ष्मणो राघवमिष्टचेष्टो ररक्ष धर्मेण बलेन चैव
As he walked, moving with the grace of a rutting elephant, undisturbed in mind, Lakṣmaṇa, devoted to his brother, protected Rāghava by righteousness and by strength.
तावृष्यमूकस्य समीपचारी चरन् ददर्शाद्भुतदर्शनीयौ। शाखामृगाणामधिपस्तरस्वी वितत्रसे नैव विचेष्ट चेष्टाम्
As they moved near the slopes of Ṛṣyamūka, they saw two wondrously strange leaders of the monkey bands, who neither trembled nor stirred at their approach.
स तौ महात्मा गजमन्दगामी शाखामृगस्तत्र चरंश्चरन्तौ। दृष्ट्वा विषादं परमं जगाम चिन्तापरीतो भयभारभग्नः
There, the great-souled leader of the monkeys, moving with the gait of a slow elephant, saw the two as they wandered, and, overwhelmed by fear and anxiety, fell into deep despondency.
तमाश्रमं पुण्यसुखं शरण्यं सदैव शाखामृगसेवितान्तम्। त्रस्ताश्च दृष्ट्वा हरयोऽभिजग्मु- र्महौजसौ राघवलक्ष्मणौ तौ
Seeing those two mighty Rāghava and Lakṣmaṇa, the monkeys, frightened, approached that hermitage, holy, blissful, and a refuge, always frequented by monkey chiefs.

Hear now the second sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
तौ तु दृष्ट्वा महात्मानौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। वरायुधधरौ वीरौ सुग्रीवः शङ्कितोऽभवत्
Seeing the two noble brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, bearing excellent weapons and displaying valor, Sugrīva became apprehensive.
नैव चक्रे मनः स्थातुं वीक्षमाणौ महाबलौ। कपेः परमभीतस्य चित्तं व्यवससाद ह
He could not bring himself to remain, observing those mighty ones; the mind of the greatly frightened monkey became unsettled.
चिन्तयित्वा स धर्मात्मा विमृश्य गुरुलाघवम्। सुग्रीवः परमोद्विग्नः सर्वैस्तैर्वानरैः सह
Reflecting and considering the gravity of the situation, Sugrīva, righteous in nature, was deeply distressed along with all those monkeys.
ततः स सचिवेभ्यस्तु सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः। शशंस परमोद्विग्नः पश्यंस्तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ
Then Sugrīva, the lord of the monkeys, extremely anxious, informed his counselors while gazing at Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
एतौ वनमिदं दुर्गं वालिप्रणिहितौ ध्रुवम्। छद्मना चीरवसनौ प्रचरन्ताविहागतौ
These two have surely entered this difficult forest at Vāli's behest; disguised in ascetic garb, they wander here with some hidden purpose.
ततः सुग्रीवसचिवा दृष्ट्वा परमधन्विनौ। जग्मुर्गिरितटात् तस्मादन्यच्छिखरमुत्तमम्
Then Sugrīva's counselors, seeing those supreme archers, moved from that mountain slope to another excellent peak.
ते क्षिप्रमभिगम्याथ यूथपा यूथपर्षभम्। हरयो वानरश्रेष्ठं परिवार्योपतस्थिरे
Having quickly reached it, the monkey leaders surrounded and approached the foremost among monkeys, Sugrīva.
एवमेकायनगताः प्लवमाना गिरेर्गिरिम्। प्रकम्पयन्तो वेगेन गिरीणां शिखराणि च
Thus, moving together in a line, leaping from mountain to mountain, they shook the peaks of the mountains with their speed.
ततः शाखामृगाः सर्वे प्लवमाना महाबलाः। बभञ्जुश्च नगांस्तत्र पुष्पितान् दुर्गमाश्रितान्
Then all the powerful monkeys, leaping, broke the blossoming trees there that grew in inaccessible places.
आप्लवन्तो हरिवराः सर्वतस्तं महागिरिम्। मृगमार्जारशार्दूलांस्त्रासयन्तो ययुस्तदा
The excellent monkeys, leaping all around that great mountain, frightened the deer, cats, and tigers as they went.
ततः सुग्रीवसचिवाः पर्वतेन्द्रे समाहिताः। संगम्य कपिमुख्येन सर्वे प्राञ्जलयः स्थिताः
Then Sugrīva's counselors, gathered with the chief monkey, stood together on the lordly mountain, all with joined palms.
ततस्तु भयसंत्रस्तं वालिकिल्बिषशङ्कितम्। उवाच हनुमान् वाक्यं सुग्रीवं वाक्यकोविदः
Then Hanumān, skilled in speech, addressed Sugrīva, who was terrified and suspicious of Vāli's wrongdoing.
सम्भ्रमस्त्यज्यतामेष सर्वैर्वालिकृते महान्। मलयोऽयं गिरिवरो भयं नेहास्ति वालिनः
Let this great anxiety about Vāli be abandoned by all; this Malaya mountain is excellent, and there is no danger from Vāli here.
यस्मादुद्विग्नचेतास्त्वं विद्रुतो हरिपुङ्गव। तं क्रूरदर्शनं क्रूरं नेह पश्यामि वालिनम्
Because you, O foremost monkey, have fled in fear, I do not see that cruel-looking, cruel Vāli here.
यस्मात् तव भयं सौम्य पूर्वजात् पापकर्मणः। स नेह वाली दुष्टात्मा न ते पश्याम्यहं भयम्
Because your fear, gentle one, arises from the evil deeds of your elder, that wicked-hearted Vāli is not here; I do not perceive any danger for you.
अहो शाखामृगत्वं ते व्यक्तमेव प्लवङ्गम। लघुचित्ततयाऽऽत्मानं न स्थापयसि यो मतौ
Ah, your monkey nature is clearly evident, O leaping one; due to your fickle mind, you do not keep yourself steady in thought.
बुद्धिविज्ञानसम्पन्न इङ्गितैः सर्वमाचर। नह्यबुद्धिं गतो राजा सर्वभूतानि शास्ति हि
Endowed with intelligence and discernment, act according to signs in all matters; for a king who lacks wisdom cannot rule all beings.
सुग्रीवस्तु शुभं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सर्वं हनूमतः। ततः शुभतरं वाक्यं हनूमन्तमुवाच ह
Sugrīva, having heard all the auspicious words of Hanumān, then spoke even more auspicious words to Hanumān.
दीर्घबाहू विशालाक्षौ शरचापासिधारिणौ। कस्य न स्याद् भयं दृष्ट्वा ह्येतौ सुरसुतोपमौ
With long arms and wide eyes, bearing bow, arrows, and sword—who would not feel fear upon seeing these two, who resemble the sons of the gods?
