Thereafter, the mighty one, together with Lakshmana, reached the Pampa lake, gazing all around at the flower-laden trees.

Upon reaching from afar that water-bearing lake called Matanga's pool, Rama entered it.

There, the two sons of Raghu, composed and undisturbed, went; but Rama, son of Dasharatha, was overcome by grief.

He entered the lovely lotus-pond, filled with blooming lotuses and surrounded by tilaka, ashoka, punnaga, bakula, and udalaka trees.

Then, seeing that Pampa, Rama, together with Saumitri, the radiant son of Dasaratha, lamented,

The mighty Sugriva, renowned by name, dwells there; approach Sugriva, the king of the monkeys, O best of men,
Thus spoke the truly valiant one again to Lakshmana: 'How can I live, Lakshmana, without Sita?'
Having spoken thus, tormented by love, his mind fixed on nothing else, he entered the delightful lotus-filled Pampa with Lakshmana, uttering that supreme sorrow,

Proceeding gradually, observing the forest, he saw Pampa, whose groves were beautiful to behold, teeming with many kinds of birds, and entered it with Lakshmana,

There, upon seeing her, his senses trembled with joy; overcome by desire, he spoke this to Saumitri:
Saumitri, behold Pampa, with waters clear as beryl, adorned with blooming lotuses and blue water-lilies, and beautified by various trees.
Saumitri, look at the forest of Pampa, delightful to see, where mountains shine and trees stand like peaks.
But grief oppresses me, tormented as I am, by sorrow for Bharata and the abduction of Vaidehī.

This gentle breeze, O Saumitri, is delightful; the season is filled with passion, fragrant and sweet, as trees bear fresh flowers and fruit.
