With melodious voices, they sing in the waters of Pampā; they do not fear humans when seen, being innocent of harm and auspicious.
You will eat those birds, large and resembling balls of clarified butter; red ones, those with curved beaks, and also reed-dwelling fish, O Rāghava.
There, Rāma, you will eat the excellent fish of Pampā, freshly caught, without skin or fins, roasted, lean, and with a single spine.
Lakṣmaṇa, filled with devotion to you, will serve those fish; as you eat them, amidst the flowers gathered from Pampā.
He will draw for you water from Pampā, fragrant with lotuses, auspicious, pleasantly cool, pure, and clear like silver or crystal.
Then Lakṣmaṇa will give you water with a lotus leaf; and also offer large, mountain-cave dwelling monkeys, wanderers of the forest.
In the evening, as you wander, Lakṣmaṇa will show you, O Rāma, those who have turned away from the water out of greed, bellowing like bulls.
You will see, O best of men, large yellow ones in Pampā; in the evening, as you wander, O Rāma, trees adorned with garlands.
Seeing the auspicious water in Pampā, you will let go of your sorrow; there, the trees are adorned with flowers—tilaka and night jasmine.
And also blooming lotuses and water lilies, O Rāghava; no man has placed those garlands there.
Nor do they wither or fall, O Rāghava; the disciples of Mataṅga, the sages, are present there, deeply absorbed.
For those who, burdened by carrying forest produce for their teacher, quickly dropped beads of sweat from their bodies onto the earth.
Those garlands arose then from the ascetics’ austerity, born from drops of sweat, and do not perish, O Rāghava.
Even today, their attendant is seen, named Śabarī, a long-lived ascetic, O descendant of Kakutstha.
She, always steadfast in righteousness and revered by all beings, upon seeing you, O Rāma, divine in form, will attain the heavenly world.
Then, O descendant of Kakutstha, you will see that incomparable and secret hermitage, situated on the western shore of Lake Pampa.
There, by the ordinance of the sage Matanga, even elephants are unable to enter that hermitage or the surrounding forest.
O delight of the Raghus, that forest, renowned as Matanga's Grove, resembles Nandana and is like the gods' own woodland.
In that forest, resounding with many kinds of birds, you will delight, O Rama, in perfect happiness; and before Pampa stands Rishyamuka, blossoming with trees.
It is exceedingly difficult to climb, guarded by young elephants, and was nobly fashioned by Brahma himself in ancient times.
O Rama, a man who sleeps upon the summit of that mountain attains, upon waking, whatever wealth he sees in his dreams.
But if anyone of wicked conduct and evil deeds climbs it, the Rakshasas there seize him while he sleeps and strike him down.
There, too, is heard the great cry of young elephants playing in Pampa, belonging to the dwellers of Matanga's hermitage.
The mighty elephants, their bodies streaked with streams of blood, gather together and roam about separately, swift and dark as clouds.
There, after drinking pure, lovely, and clear water—cool to the touch and filled with all fragrances—they are fully satisfied.
Content, those forest-dwellers then roam the woods, mingling with bears and tigers, whose soft blue fur shines.
Seeing the antelopes, the wild boars, and the fearless deer, your sorrow will vanish; and, O Rama, a great cave adorns that mountain.
O descendant of Kakutstha, the cave is covered with rocks and difficult to enter; at its eastern entrance lies a great pool of cold water, delightful, filled with many roots and fruits, crowded with various trees. In that place, the righteous Sugriva dwells with the monkeys.
Sometimes, Kabandha also stands upon the summit of that mountain, instructing both Rama and Lakshmana in this way.
Wreathed with garlands and shining like the sun, the mighty Kabandha appeared in the sky; and Rama and Lakshmana beheld him there.
