एकस्य नापराधेन लोकान् हन्तुं त्वमर्हसि। ननु जानामि कस्यायं भग्नः सांग्रामिको रथः
You should not destroy the worlds for the offense of one; I do not yet know whose battle-chariot this is, broken as it is.
केन वा कस्य वा हेतोः सयुगः सपरिच्छदः। खुरनेमिक्षतश्चायं सिक्तो रुधिरबिन्दुभिः
By whom, for whom, and for what reason is this chariot, with its yoke and fittings, wounded by hooves and wheels, sprinkled with drops of blood?
देशो निर्वृत्तसंग्रामः सुघोरः पार्थिवात्मज। एकस्य तु विमर्दोऽयं न द्वयोर्वदतां वर
This place, O prince, is the site of a fierce battle now ended; but the struggle was only between one and another, not two, O best of speakers.
नहि वृत्तं हि पश्यामि बलस्य महतः पदम्। नैकस्य तु कृते लोकान् विनाशयितुमर्हसि
I do not see any trace of a great army's movement here; you should not destroy the worlds for the deed of a single person.
युक्तदण्डा हि मृदवः प्रशान्ता वसुधाधिपाः। सदा त्वं सर्वभूतानां शरण्यः परमा गतिः
Gentle and peaceful rulers administer just punishment; you are always the refuge and highest goal of all beings.
को नु दारप्रणाशं ते साधु मन्येत राघव। सरितः सागराः शैला देवगन्धर्वदानवाः
Who, O Raghava, would approve the loss of your wife? Rivers, oceans, mountains, gods, Gandharvas, and demons—
नालं ते विप्रियं कर्तुं दीक्षितस्येव साधवः। येन राजन् हृता सीता तमन्वेषितुमर्हसि
None are able to harm you, just as the virtuous cannot harm one who is consecrated; O king, you should search for the one who has taken Sita.
मद्द्वितीयो धनुष्पाणिः सहायैः परमर्षिभिः। समुद्रं वा विचेष्यामः पर्वतांश्च वनानि च
With you, unrivaled and armed with your bow, and aided by the foremost sages, we shall search the ocean, the mountains, and the forests.
गुहाश्च विविधा घोराः पद्मिन्यो विविधास्तथा। देवगन्धर्वलोकांश्च विचेष्यामः समाहिताः
We shall thoroughly search the various dreadful caves, the many lotus lakes, and the realms of gods and Gandharvas.
यावन्नाधिगमिष्यामस्तव भार्यापहारिणम्। न चेत् साम्ना प्रदास्यन्ति पत्नीं ते त्रिदशेश्वराः। कोसलेन्द्र ततः पश्चात् प्राप्तकालं करिष्यसि
Until we find the one who has taken your wife, if the lords of heaven do not return your spouse by peaceful means, O king of Kosala, then you shall act when the time is right.
शीलेन साम्ना विनयेन सीतां नयेन न प्राप्स्यसि चेन्नरेन्द्र। ततः समुत्सादय हेमपुङ्खै- र्महेन्द्रवज्रप्रतिमैः शरौघैः
If, O king, you do not obtain Sita by virtue, persuasion, and humility, then destroy them with arrows tipped with gold, like Indra's thunderbolts.

Bound by your virtues, the king—lord of the earth—attained divinity upon separation from you, as has been heard regarding Bharata.
यदि दुःखमिदं प्राप्तं काकुत्स्थ न सहिष्यसे। प्राकृतश्चाल्पसत्त्वश्च इतरः कः सहिष्यति
If you, Kakutstha, cannot endure this sorrow that has come, then who else, being ordinary and of little strength, could possibly endure it?
आश्वसिहि नरश्रेष्ठ प्राणिनः कस्य नापदः। संस्पृशन्त्यग्निवद् राजन् क्षणेन व्यपयान्ति च
Take heart, best of men; who among living beings is untouched by misfortune? Like fire, O king, they touch for a moment and then pass away.
दुःखितो हि भवाँल्लोकांस्तेजसा यदि धक्ष्यते। आर्ताः प्रजा नरव्याघ्र क्व नु यास्यन्ति निर्वृतिम्
If, overwhelmed by grief, you were to burn the worlds with your energy, O tiger among men, where would the afflicted people find relief?
लोकस्वभाव एवैष ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः। गतः शक्रेण सालोक्यमनयस्तं समस्पृशत्
This is the very nature of the world: Yayati, son of Nahusha, attained the same realm as Indra, yet misfortune befell him as well.
महर्षिर्यो वसिष्ठस्तु यः पितुर्नः पुरोहितः। अह्ना पुत्रशतं जज्ञे तथैवास्य पुनर्हतम्

यौ धर्मौ जगतो नेत्रौ यत्र सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम्। आदित्यचन्द्रौ ग्रहणमभ्युपेतौ महाबलौ
The two upholders of righteousness, the eyes of the world, upon whom all rests—the mighty Sun and Moon—have suffered eclipses.
सुमहान्त्यपि भूतानि देवाश्च पुरुषर्षभ। न दैवस्य प्रमुञ्चन्ति सर्वभूतानि देहिनः
Even the greatest beings and the gods, O best of men, do not escape fate; all embodied beings are subject to destiny.
शक्रादिष्वपि देवेषु वर्तमानौ नयानयौ। श्रूयेते नरशार्दूल न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि
Even among the gods, like Indra and others, both good and bad fortune are heard of, O tiger among men; you should not grieve.
मृतायामपि वैदेह्यां नष्टायामपि राघव। शोचितुं नार्हसे वीर यथान्यः प्राकृतस्तथा
Even if Vaidehi were dead, even if she were lost, O Raghava, you, O hero, should not grieve as an ordinary man would.
त्वद्विधा नहि शोचन्ति सततं सर्वदर्शनाः। सुमहत्स्वपि कृच्छ्रेषु रामानिर्विण्णदर्शनाः
Men like you, who see all things, do not constantly grieve, O Rama, even in the greatest hardships, for their vision is unwavering.
तत्त्वतो हि नरश्रेष्ठ बुद्ध्या समनुचिन्तय। बुद्ध्या युक्ता महाप्राज्ञा विजानन्ति शुभाशुभे
Therefore, best of men, reflect with your intellect on the truth; those endowed with wisdom discern good and evil by reason.
अदृष्टगुणदोषाणामध्रुवाणां तु कर्मणाम्। नान्तरेण क्रियां तेषां फलमिष्टं च वर्तते
For actions whose merits and faults are unseen and whose results are uncertain, their desired fruits do not arise without effort.
मामेवं हि पुरा वीर त्वमेव बहुशोक्तवान्। अनुशिष्याद्धि को नु त्वामपि साक्षाद् बृहस्पतिः
Indeed, O hero, you have often spoken thus to me before; who could instruct you—even Brihaspati himself?
