अलं विक्लवतां गन्तुं स्वस्था भव निरुत्सुका। न चास्ति त्रिषु लोकेषु पुमान् यो राघवं रणे
Enough of this agitation; be calm and free from anxiety. In all three worlds, there is no man who could defeat Raghava in battle.
जातो वा जायमानो वा संयुगे यः पराजयेत्। अजेयो राघवो युद्धे देवैः शक्रपुरोगमैः
Whether born or yet to be born, there is none who could conquer him in combat; Raghava is invincible in war, even to the gods led by Indra.
एवमुक्ता तु वैदेही परिमोहितचेतना। उवाचाश्रूणि मुञ्चन्ती दारुणं मामिदं वचः
Thus addressed, Vaidehi, her mind bewildered, shed tears and spoke these harsh words to me.
भावो मयि तवात्यर्थं पाप एव निवेशितः। विनष्टे भ्रातरि प्राप्तुं न च त्वं मामवाप्स्यसे
Your feelings toward me are entirely sinful; with my brother lost, you will not attain me.
संकेताद् भरतेन त्वं रामं समनुगच्छसि। क्रोशन्तं हि यथात्यर्थं नैनमभ्यवपद्यसे
At Bharata's signal, you pursue Rama, and though he cries out desperately, you do not go to him.
रिपुः प्रच्छन्नचारी त्वं मदर्थमनुगच्छसि। राघवस्यान्तरं प्रेप्सुस्तथैनं नाभिपद्यसे
You are a hidden enemy, following me for your own ends, seeking to harm Raghava, and so you do not approach him.
एवमुक्तस्तु वैदेह्या संरब्धो रक्तलोचनः। क्रोधात् प्रस्फुरमाणोष्ठ आश्रमादभिनिर्गतः
Thus addressed by Vaidehi, Lakshmana, his eyes red with anger, lips quivering in rage, left the hermitage.
एवं ब्रुवाणं सौमित्रिं रामः संतापमोहितः। अब्रवीद् दुष्कृतं सौम्य तां विना त्वमिहागतः
Thus, to Saumitri who spoke in this way, Rāma, overcome by grief and confusion, said: 'O gentle one, you have come here without her, committing a wrong.'
जानन्नपि समर्थं मां रक्षसामपवारणे। अनेन क्रोधवाक्येन मैथिल्या निर्गतो भवान्
Even though you knew I was capable of protecting against the Rākṣasas, you left Maithilī and came here, driven by words of anger.
नहि ते परितुष्यामि त्यक्त्वा यदसि मैथिलीम्। क्रुद्धायाः परुषं श्रुत्वा स्त्रिया यत् त्वमिहागतः
I am not pleased with you, for you abandoned Maithilī and came here after hearing harsh words from an angry woman.
सर्वथा त्वपनीतं ते सीतया यत् प्रचोदितः। क्रोधस्य वशमागम्य नाकरोः शासनं मम
Indeed, you were swayed by Sītā's urging and, overcome by anger, you did not follow my command.
असौ हि राक्षसः शेते शरेणाभिहतो मया। मृगरूपेण येनाहमाश्रमादपवाहितः
That Rākṣasa lies slain by my arrow—he who, in the form of a deer, lured me away from the hermitage.
विकृष्य चापं परिधाय सायकं सलीलबाणेन च ताडितो मया। मार्गीं तनुं त्यज्य च विक्लवस्वरो बभूव केयूरधरः स राक्षसः
Drawing my bow and fitting an arrow, I struck him with a swift shaft; abandoning his illusory form, his voice faltered, and that Rākṣasa, adorned with armlets, was revealed.
शराहतेनैव तदार्तया गिरा स्वरं ममालम्ब्य सुदूरसुश्रवम्। उदाहृतं तद् वचनं सुदारुणं त्वमागतो येन विहाय मैथिलीम्
Struck by my arrow, in a voice full of pain, he called out to me from afar with a dreadful cry—because of which you left Maithilī and came here.

The sixtieth sarga is to be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Araṇyakāṇḍa.
भृशमाव्रजमानस्य तस्याधो वामलोचनम्। प्रास्फुरच्चास्खलद् रामो वेपथुश्चास्य जायते
As he hurried along, his left eye throbbed, Rāma stumbled and faltered, and trembling seized him.
उपालक्ष्य निमित्तानि सोऽशुभानि मुहुर्मुहुः। अपि क्षेमं तु सीताया इति वै व्याजहार ह
Observing these repeated evil omens, he kept saying, 'May Sītā be safe.'
त्वरमाणो जगामाथ सीतादर्शनलालसः। शून्यमावसथं दृष्ट्वा बभूवोद्विग्नमानसः
Hastening, longing to see Sītā, he arrived and, seeing the dwelling empty, became deeply anxious.
उद्भ्रमन्निव वेगेन विक्षिपन् रघुनन्दनः। तत्र तत्रोटजस्थानमभिवीक्ष्य समन्ततः
Raghunandana rushed about swiftly, glancing everywhere at the hermitage grounds.
ददर्श पर्णशालां च सीतया रहितां तदा। श्रिया विरहितां ध्वस्तां हेमन्ते पद्मिनीमिव
He saw the leaf-hut, now bereft of Sītā, stripped of its beauty, ruined like a lotus pond in winter.
रुदन्तमिव वृक्षैश्च ग्लानपुष्पमृगद्विजम्। श्रिया विहीनं विध्वस्तं संत्यक्तं वनदैवतैः
With trees seeming to weep, their flowers, deer, and birds all wilted, the place was desolate, abandoned by the spirits of the forest.
विप्रकीर्णाजिनकुशं विप्रविद्धबृसीकटम्। दृष्ट्वा शून्योटजस्थानं विललाप पुनः पुनः
Seeing the hermitage scattered with disordered skins and sacred grass, and the seat overturned, he lamented again and again.
हृता मृता वा नष्टा वा भक्षिता वा भविष्यति। निलीनाप्यथवा भीरुरथवा वनमाश्रिता
'She has been carried off, or killed, or lost, or perhaps devoured; or maybe, frightened, she is hiding, or has taken refuge in the forest.'
गता विचेतुं पुष्पाणि फलान्यपि च वा पुनः। अथवा पद्मिनीं याता जलार्थं वा नदीं गता
'Perhaps she went to gather flowers or fruits, or perhaps she went to the lotus pond, or to the river for water.'
यत्नान्मृगयमाणस्तु नाससाद वने प्रियाम्। शोकरक्तेक्षणः श्रीमानुन्मत्त इव लक्ष्यते
Though he searched the forest with all his effort, he did not find his beloved; his eyes reddened with grief, the glorious one wandered like a madman.
वृक्षाद् वृक्षं प्रधावन् स गिरींश्चापि नदीनदम्। बभ्राम विलपन् रामः शोकपङ्कार्णवप्लुतः
Running from tree to tree, and also among mountains and rivers, Rama wandered, lamenting, submerged in the ocean of sorrow and grief.
अस्ति कच्चित्त्वया दृष्टा सा कदम्बप्रिया प्रिया। कदम्ब यदि जानीषे शंस सीतां शुभाननाम्
O Kadamba tree, have you perchance seen my beloved, who loves kadamba trees? If you know, tell me of Sita, whose face is beautiful.
स्निग्धपल्लवसंकाशां पीतकौशेयवासिनीम्। शंसस्व यदि सा दृष्टा बिल्व बिल्वोपमस्तनी
If you have seen her, who resembles tender leaves and wears yellow silk, tell me, O Bilva tree, of her whose breasts are like bilva fruits.
अथवार्जुन शंस त्वं प्रियां तामर्जुनप्रियाम्। जनकस्य सुता तन्वी यदि जीवति वा न वा
Or, O Arjuna tree, tell me of my beloved, who loves arjuna trees; whether the slender daughter of Janaka is alive or not.
ककुभः ककुभोरुं तां व्यक्तं जानाति मैथिलीम्। लतापल्लवपुष्पाढ्यो भाति ह्येष वनस्पतिः
Surely the trees know Maithili, whose thighs are like tree trunks; this tree, rich with creepers, leaves, and flowers, shines brightly.
