तं दृष्ट्वा पतितं भूमौ क्षतजार्द्रं जटायुषम्। अभ्यधावत वैदेही स्वबन्धुमिव दुःखिता
Seeing Jaṭāyu fallen to the ground, drenched in blood, Vaidehī, distressed, rushed toward him as one would to a dear kinsman.
तं नीलजीमूतनिकाशकल्पं सपाण्डुरोरस्कमुदारवीर्यम्। ददर्श लङ्काधिपतिः पृथिव्यां जटायुषं शान्तमिवाग्निदावम्
The lord of Laṅkā beheld Jaṭāyu on the earth, resembling a dark rain cloud, with pale chest and noble strength, lying still like a fire at the end of a forest blaze.
ततस्तु तं पत्ररथं महीतले निपातितं रावणवेगमर्दितम्। पुनश्च संगृह्य शशिप्रभानना रुरोद सीता जनकात्मजा तदा
Then Sītā, her face radiant as the moon, once more embraced the bird, fallen to the ground and subdued by Rāvaṇa's might, and wept, daughter of Janaka.

Hear now the fifty-second sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Araṇyakāṇḍa.
सा तु ताराधिपमुखी रावणेन निरीक्ष्य तम्। गृध्रराजं विनिहतं विललाप सुदुःखिता
Then Sītā, foremost among women, seeing the king of vultures slain by Rāvaṇa, lamented in deep sorrow.
निमित्तं लक्षणं स्वप्नं शकुनिस्वरदर्शनम्। अवश्यं सुखदुःखेषु नराणां परिदृश्यते
Omens, signs, dreams, and the cries of birds are surely seen in the joys and sorrows destined for men.
न नूनं राम जानासि महद्व्यसनमात्मनः। धावन्ति नूनं काकुत्स्थ मदर्थं मृगपक्षिणः
Surely, Rāma, you do not know of your great misfortune; indeed, O descendant of Kakutstha, beasts and birds are running for my sake.
अयं हि कृपया राम मां त्रातुमिह संगतः। शेते विनिहतो भूमौ ममाभाग्याद् विहंगमः
This bird, out of compassion, came here to save me, but now lies slain on the ground because of my misfortune.
त्राहि मामद्य काकुत्स्थ लक्ष्मणेति वराङ्गना। सुसंत्रस्ता समाक्रन्दच्छृण्वतां तु यथान्तिके
"Save me now, O Kakutstha, O Lakṣmaṇa!" the noble lady, greatly terrified, cried out, hoping those nearby might hear.
तां क्लिष्टमाल्याभरणां विलपन्तीमनाथवत्। अभ्यधावत वैदेहीं रावणो राक्षसाधिपः
As she, adorned with disheveled garlands and ornaments, wailed like one abandoned, Rāvaṇa, lord of the Rākṣasas, rushed toward Vaidehī.
तां लतामिव वेष्टन्तीमालिङ्गन्तीं महाद्रुमान्। मुञ्च मुञ्चेति बहुशः प्राप तां राक्षसाधिपः
Like a vine clinging to great trees, she embraced them, crying again and again, "Let me go, let me go!" But the lord of the Rākṣasas seized her.
क्रोशन्तीं राम रामेति रामेण रहितां वने। जीवितान्ताय केशेषु जग्राहान्तकसंनिभः
Crying out "Rāma! Rāma!" in the forest, bereft of Rāma, she was seized by the hair by that death-like figure, as if for the end of her life.
प्रधर्षितायां वैदेह्यां बभूव सचराचरम्। जगत् सर्वममर्यादं तमसान्धेन संवृतम्
When Vaidehī was violated, the whole world of moving and unmoving beings became lawless, enveloped in dense darkness.
न वाति मारुतस्तत्र निष्प्रभोऽभूद् दिवाकरः। दृष्ट्वा सीतां परामृष्टां देवो दिव्येन चक्षुषा
There, the wind did not blow, and the sun lost its brilliance, when the gods, with their divine sight, beheld Sita being seized.
कृतं कार्यमिति श्रीमान् व्याजहार पितामहः। प्रहृष्टा व्यथिताश्चासन् सर्वे ते परमर्षयः
Then the illustrious Grandfather declared, 'The task is accomplished,' and all those great sages became both delighted and distressed.
दृष्ट्वा सीतां परामृष्टां दण्डकारण्यवासिनः। रावणस्य विनाशं च प्राप्तं बुद्ध्वा यदृच्छया
Seeing Sita being seized, and realizing by chance that Ravana's destruction was now certain, the dwellers of Dandaka forest understood.
स तु तां राम रामेति रुदतीं लक्ष्मणेति च। जगामादाय चाकाशं रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः
But Ravana, the lord of the Rakshasas, took her, crying out 'Rama!' and 'Lakshmana!' and ascended into the sky.
तप्ताभरणवर्णाङ्गी पीतकौशेयवासिनी। रराज राजपुत्री तु विद्युत्सौदामनी यथा
The princess, with limbs shining like heated gold and clad in yellow silk, shone like a lightning flash in the clouds.
उद्धूतेन च वस्त्रेण तस्याः पीतेन रावणः। अधिकं परिबभ्राज गिरिर्दीप्त इवाग्निना
With her yellow garment fluttering, Sita made Ravana shine even more, like a mountain ablaze with fire.
तस्याः परमकल्याण्यास्ताम्राणि सुरभीणि च। पद्मपत्राणि वैदेह्या अभ्यकीर्यन्त रावणम्
From that supremely auspicious lady, fragrant red lotus petals fell upon Ravana.
तस्याः कौशेयमुद्धूतमाकाशे कनकप्रभम्। बभौ चादित्यरागेण ताम्रमभ्रमिवातपे
Her yellow silk garment, fluttering in the sky and gleaming like gold, glowed with the hue of the sun, like a red cloud in sunlight.
तस्यास्तद् विमलं वक्त्रमाकाशे रावणाङ्कगम्। न रराज विना रामं विनालमिव पङ्कजम्
Her pure face, resting on Ravana's lap in the sky, did not shine without Rama, like a lotus without its stem.
बभूव जलदं नीलं भित्त्वा चन्द्र इवोदितः। सुललाटं सुकेशान्तं पद्मगर्भाभमव्रणम्
Her face, with a lovely forehead, beautiful hairline, and resembling the heart of a lotus, spotless, appeared like the moon emerging from behind a blue cloud.
शुक्लैः सुविमलैर्दन्तैः प्रभावद्भिरलंकृतम्। तस्याः सुनयनं वक्त्रमाकाशे रावणाङ्कगम्
Her beautiful face, adorned with shining, spotless white teeth and lovely eyes, resting on Ravana's lap in the sky, was radiant.
रुदितं व्यपमृष्टास्रं चन्द्रवत् प्रियदर्शनम्। सुनासं चारुताम्रोष्ठमाकाशे हाटकप्रभम्
Her weeping face, with tears wiped away, charming as the moon, with a fine nose and lovely red lips, shone in the sky with a golden glow.
राक्षसेन्द्रसमाधूतं तस्यास्तद् वदनं शुभम्। शुशुभे न विना रामं दिवा चन्द्र इवोदितः
That beautiful face of hers, shaken by the king of the Rakshasas, did not shine without Rama, like the moon in the day.
सा हेमवर्णा नीलाङ्गं मैथिली राक्षसाधिपम्। शुशुभे काञ्चनी काञ्ची नीलं गजमिवाश्रिता
That golden-hued Maithili, clinging to the dark-bodied lord of the Rakshasas, shone like a golden girdle on a blue elephant.
सा पद्मपीता हेमाभा रावणं जनकात्मजा। विद्युद् घनमिवाविश्य शुशुभे तप्तभूषणा
The daughter of Janaka, golden and radiant as a lotus, entered Ravana like lightning entering a cloud, adorned with blazing ornaments.
तस्या भूषणघोषेण वैदेह्या राक्षसेश्वरः। बभूव विमलो नीलः सघोष इव तोयदः
By the sound of Vaidehi's ornaments, the lord of the Rakshasas appeared pure and dark, like a thundering raincloud.
उत्तमाङ्गच्युता तस्याः पुष्पवृष्टिः समन्ततः। सीताया ह्रियमाणायाः पपात धरणीतले
A shower of flowers, fallen from her head, rained down all around as Sita was being carried away, falling to the earth.
