दर्शयामास चात्मानं समुद्रः सरितां पतिः । समुद्रवचनाच्चैव नलं सेतुमकारयत् ॥१-१-
The lord of rivers, the ocean, revealed himself, and at his word, Nala constructed the bridge.
तेन गत्वा पुरीं लङ्कां हत्वा रावणमाहवे । रामः सीतामनुप्राप्य परां व्रीडामुपागमत् ॥१-१-
By that bridge, they reached the city of Lanka, slew Ravana in battle, and Rama, having regained Sita, was overcome with deep shame.
तामुवाच ततो रामः परुषं जनसंसदि । अमृष्यमाणा सा सीता विवेश ज्वलनं सती ॥१-१-
Then Rama spoke harshly to her in the assembly of people, and Sita, unable to bear it, entered the fire, remaining true.
ततोऽग्निवचनात् सीतां ज्ञात्वा विगतकल्मषाम् । कर्मणा तेन महता त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ॥१-१-
Then, by the testimony of fire, knowing Sita to be free from sin, with that great deed, the three worlds, with all beings, were satisfied.
सदेवर्षिगणं तुष्टं राघवस्य महात्मनः १-१-
The hosts of gods and sages were pleased with the great-souled Raghava.
अभ्यषिच्य च लङ्कायां राक्षसेन्द्रं विभीषणम् । कृतकृत्यस्तदा रामो विज्वरः प्रमुमोद ह ॥१-१-
Having anointed Vibhishana, king of the rakshasas, in Lanka, Rama, his task accomplished and free from sorrow, rejoiced.
देवताभ्यो वरं प्राप्य समुत्थाप्य च वानरान् । अयोध्यां प्रस्थितो रामः पुष्पकेण सुहृद्वृतः ॥१-१-
Receiving a boon from the gods and reviving the monkeys, Rama set out for Ayodhya, surrounded by friends, in the Pushpaka chariot.
भरद्वाजाश्रमं गत्वा रामः सत्यपराक्रमः । भरतस्यान्तिके रामो हनूमन्तं व्यसर्जयत् ॥१-१-
Arriving at Bharadvaja's hermitage, Rama, steadfast in truth, sent Hanuman to Bharat's presence.
पुनराख्यायिकां जल्पन् सुग्रीवसहितस्तदा । पुष्पकं तत् समारुह्य नन्दिग्रामं ययौ तदा ॥१-१-
Then, conversing again with Sugriva, he boarded the Pushpaka and went to Nandigrama.
नन्दिग्रामे जटां हित्वा भ्रातृभिः सहितोऽनघः । रामः सीतामनुप्राप्य राज्यं पुनरवाप्तवान् ॥१-१-
In Nandigrama, shedding his matted hair, Rama, pure, together with his brothers, regained Sita and reclaimed the kingdom.
प्रहृष्टमुदितो लोकस्तुष्टः पुष्टः सुधार्मिकः । निरामयो ह्यरोगश्च दुर्भिक्षभयवर्जितः ॥१-१-
The people were joyful and delighted, content, prosperous, righteous, free from disease and illness, and without fear of famine.
न पुत्रमरणं केचित् द्रक्ष्यन्ति पुरुषाः क्वचित् । नार्यश्चाविधवा नित्यं भविष्यन्ति पतिव्रताः ॥१-१-
No one will ever witness the death of a son, and women will always remain devoted to their husbands, never becoming widows.
न चाग्निजं भयं किञ्चिन्नाप्सु मज्जन्ति जन्तवः । न वातजं भयं किञ्चित् नापि ज्वरकृतं तथा ॥१-१-
There will be no fear from fire, no creatures will drown in water, there will be no fear from wind, nor from fever.
न चापि क्षुद्भयं तत्र न तस्करभयं तथा । नगराणि च राष्ट्राणि धनधान्ययुतानि च ॥१-१-
There will be no fear of hunger, nor of thieves; cities and kingdoms will be filled with wealth and grain.
नित्यं प्रमुदिताः सर्वे यथा कृतयुगे तथा । अश्वमेधशतैरिष्ट्वा तथा बहुसुवर्णकैः ॥१-१-
All will always be joyful, as in the age of truth; having performed hundreds of horse sacrifices and given much gold.
गवां कोट्ययुतं दत्त्वा विद्वद्भ्यो विधिपूर्वकम् । असंख्येयं धनं दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणेभ्यो महायशाः ॥१-१-
Having given tens of millions of cows to the learned according to the proper rites, and immeasurable wealth to the Brahmins, the illustrious one.
राजवंशान् शतगुणान् स्थापयिष्यति राघवः । चातुर्वर्ण्यं च लोकेऽस्मिन् स्वे स्वे धर्मे नियोक्ष्यति ॥१-१-
Rāghava will establish royal lineages a hundredfold greater, and will set the four classes in the world to their own duties.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि दशवर्षशतानि च । रामो राज्यमुपासित्वा ब्रह्मलोकं प्रयास्यति ॥१-१-
After ruling for ten thousand and ten hundred years, Rāma will depart to the world of Brahmā.
इदं पवित्रं पापघ्नं पुण्यं वेदैश्च सम्मितम् । यः पठेद् रामचरितं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥१-१-
This sacred, sin-destroying, meritorious account, approved by the Vedas—whoever recites the story of Rāma is freed from all sins.
एतदाख्यानमायुष्यं पठन् रामायणं नरः । सपुत्रपौत्रः सगणः प्रेत्य स्वर्गे महीयते ॥१-१-
A man who recites this life-giving Rāmāyaṇa story is honored in heaven after death, along with his sons, grandsons, and companions.
पठन् द्विजो वागृषभत्वमीयात् । त् क्षत्रियो भूमिपतित्वमीयात् ॥ वणिक् जनः पण्यफलत्वमीयात् । जनश्च शूद्रोऽपि महत्त्वमीयात् ॥१-१-
By reciting it, a Brahmin attains eloquence; a Kṣatriya attains lordship over the earth; a merchant attains success in trade; and even a Śūdra attains greatness.

The second chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Bālakāṇḍa, is to be heard.
नारदस्य तु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा वाक्यविशारदः । पूजयामास धर्मात्मा सहशिष्यो महामुनिम् ॥१-२-
Hearing those words of Nārada, the virtuous one, skilled in speech, together with his disciples, honored the great sage.
स मुहूर्तं गते तस्मिन् देवलोकं मुनिस्तदा । जगाम तमसातीरं जाह्नव्यास्त्वविदूरतः ॥१-२-
After a moment, when that sage had gone to the world of the gods, he went to the bank of the Tamasā, not far from the Jahnavī.
स तु तीरं समासाद्य तमसाया मुनिस्तदा । शिष्यमाह स्थितं पार्श्वे दृष्ट्वा तीर्थमकर्दमम् ॥१-२-
Then, reaching the bank of the Tamasā, the sage saw the ford free of mud and spoke to his disciple standing nearby.
अकर्दममिदं तीर्थं भरद्वाज निशामय । रमणीयं प्रसन्नाम्बु सन्मनुष्यमनो यथा ॥१-२-
See, Bharadvāja, this ford is free from mud, delightful, with clear water, pleasing to the mind of good people.
न्यस्यतां कलशस्तात दीयतां वल्कलं मम । इदमेवावगाहिष्ये तमसातीर्थमुत्तमम् ॥१-२-
Let the water pot be set down, dear one, and give me my bark garment; I will bathe here at this excellent ford of the Tamasā.
एवमुक्तो भरद्वाजो वाल्मीकेन महात्मना । प्रायच्छत मुनेस्तस्य वल्कलं नियतो गुरोः ॥१-२-
Thus addressed by the great-souled Vālmīki, Bharadvāja, disciplined, handed his teacher the bark garment.
स शिष्यहस्तादादाय वल्कलं नियतेन्द्रियः । विचचार ह पश्यंस्तत् सर्वतो विपुलं वनम् ॥१-२-
Taking the bark garment from his disciple's hand, self-controlled, he wandered about, observing that vast forest in every direction.
तस्याभ्याशे तु मिथुनं चरन्तमनपायिनम् । ददर्श भगवांस्तत्र क्रौञ्चयोश्चारुनिःस्वनम् ॥१-२-
Nearby, he saw a pair of krauñcha birds moving together, inseparable, their calls sweet and lovely.
