तक्षकस्य प्रियां भार्यां पराजित्य जहार यः। कैलासं पर्वतं गत्वा विजित्य नरवाहनम्
He defeated Takṣaka and seized his beloved wife, and, conquering Naravāhana, reached Mount Kailāsa.
विमानं पुष्पकं तस्य कामगं वै जहार यः। वनं चैत्ररथं दिव्यं नलिनीं नन्दनं वनम्
He took the wondrous, wish-fulfilling Puṣpaka chariot, and the divine forests of Caitraratha, Nalinī, and Nandana.
विनाशयति यः क्रोधाद् देवोद्यानानि वीर्यवान्। चन्द्रसूर्यौ महाभागावुत्तिष्ठन्तौ परंतपौ
In his fury, he destroyed the gardens of the gods, and with his might, he restrained the glorious Sun and Moon.
निवारयति बाहुभ्यां यः शैलशिखरोपमः। दशवर्षसहस्राणि तपस्तप्त्वा महावने
With arms like mountain peaks, he held them back, having performed austerities for ten thousand years in the great forest.
पुरा स्वयंभुवे धीरः शिरांस्युपजहार यः। देवदानवगन्धर्वपिशाचपतगोरगैः
Long ago, in the time of Svayambhu, that steadfast one severed the heads of gods, demons, gandharvas, piśācas, birds, and serpents.
अभयं यस्य संग्रामे मृत्युतो मानुषादृते। मन्त्रैरभिष्टुतं पुण्यमध्वरेषु द्विजातिभिः
In battle, he feared no one but a human; praised with mantras by the twice-born at sacred rites, he was considered auspicious.
हविर्धानेषु यः सोममुपहन्ति महाबलः। प्राप्तयज्ञहरं दुष्टं ब्रह्मघ्नं क्रूरकारिणम्
He, of great might, who takes the soma at offerings, who disrupts sacrifices, who is wicked, a slayer of Brahmins, and cruel in his deeds.
कर्कशं निरनुक्रोशं प्रजानामहिते रतम्। रावणं सर्वभूतानां सर्वलोकभयावहम्
Harsh, pitiless, delighting in the harm of beings, Rāvaṇa brings terror to all creatures and to all the worlds.
राक्षसी भ्रातरं क्रूरं सा ददर्श महाबलम्। तं दिव्यवस्त्राभरणं दिव्यमाल्योपशोभितम्
The rākṣasī saw her cruel and mighty brother, adorned with divine garments and ornaments, shining with celestial garlands.
आसने सूपविष्टं तं काले कालमिवोद्यतम्। राक्षसेन्द्रं महाभागं पौलस्त्यकुलनन्दनम्
Seated upon his throne, like Death itself arisen at the appointed time, was the illustrious king of rākṣasas, the great and noble scion of the Paulastya line.
उपगम्याब्रवीद् वाक्यं राक्षसी भयविह्वला। रावणं शत्रुहन्तारं मन्त्रिभिः परिवारितम्
Approaching, the rākṣasī, trembling with fear, spoke to Rāvaṇa, the destroyer of enemies, who was surrounded by his counselors.
तमब्रवीद् दीप्तविशाललोचनं प्रदर्शयित्वा भयलोभमोहिता। सुदारुणं वाक्यमभीतचारिणी महात्मना शूर्पणखा विरूपिता
To him, whose eyes blazed wide and bright, Śūrpaṇakhā, disfigured but fearless, revealed her terror, greed, and delusion, and spoke these most dreadful words.

ततः शूर्पणखा दीना रावणं लोकरावणम्। अमात्यमध्ये संक्रुद्धा परुषं वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Then Śūrpaṇakhā, distressed, spoke harsh words in anger to Rāvaṇa, the terror of the worlds, in the midst of his ministers.
प्रमत्तः कामभोगेषु स्वैरवृत्तो निरङ्कुशः। समुत्पन्नं भयं घोरं बोद्धव्यं नावबुध्यसे
Absorbed in pleasures, unrestrained and self-willed, you do not perceive the dreadful danger that has arisen.
सक्तं ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु कामवृत्तं महीपतिम्। लुब्धं न बहु मन्यन्ते श्मशानाग्निमिव प्रजाः
A king attached to base enjoyments, ruled by desire and greed, is not respected by his people, just as the fire of a cremation ground is disregarded.
स्वयं कार्याणि यः काले नानुतिष्ठति पार्थिवः। स तु वै सह राज्येन तैश्च कार्यैर्विनश्यति
A king who does not carry out his duties at the proper time perishes, along with his kingdom and those very duties.
अयुक्तचारं दुर्दर्शमस्वाधीनं नराधिपम्। वर्जयन्ति नरा दूरान्नदीपङ्कमिव द्विपाः
People avoid a king who is careless in his spies, hard to approach, and not self-controlled, just as elephants avoid a muddy riverbank.
ये न रक्षन्ति विषयमस्वाधीनं नराधिपाः। ते न वृद्ध्या प्रकाशन्ते गिरयः सागरे यथा
Kings who do not protect their domains and lack self-mastery do not shine with prosperity, just as mountains are not visible in the sea.
आत्मवद्भिर्विगृह्य त्वं देवगन्धर्वदानवैः। अयुक्तचारश्चपलः कथं राजा भविष्यसि
How will you, lacking proper intelligence and unstable, be a king when opposed by gods, gandharvas, and demons who are wise and self-possessed?
त्वं तु बालस्वभावश्च बुद्धिहीनश्च राक्षस। ज्ञातव्यं तन्न जानीषे कथं राजा भविष्यसि
You, rākṣasa, are childish in nature and lacking in wisdom; you do not know what must be known—how then will you be a king?
येषां चाराश्च कोशश्च नयश्च जयतां वर। अस्वाधीना नरेन्द्राणां प्राकृतैस्ते जनैः समाः
Kings whose spies, treasury, and policy are not under their control are like ordinary men, O best of conquerors.
यस्मात् पश्यन्ति दूरस्थान् सर्वानर्थान् नराधिपाः। चारेण तस्मादुच्यन्ते राजानो दीर्घचक्षुषः
Because kings perceive all dangers, even those far away, through intelligence agents, they are therefore called 'far-sighted.'
अयुक्तचारं मन्ये त्वां प्राकृतैः सचिवैर्युतः। स्वजनं च जनस्थानं निहतं नावबुध्यसे
I consider you to be one who does not employ spies, surrounded by ordinary counselors; you do not realize that your own people and Janasthāna have been destroyed.
चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम्। हतान्येकेन रामेण खरश्च सहदूषणः
Fourteen thousand Rākṣasas of terrible deeds have been slain by Rāma alone, along with Khara and Dūṣaṇa.
ऋषीणामभयं दत्तं कृतक्षेमाश्च दण्डकाः। धर्षितं च जनस्थानं रामेणाक्लिष्टकारिणा
He has granted safety to the sages, the Daṇḍaka forest is now secure, and Janasthāna has been violated by Rāma, who acts without fatigue.
त्वं तु लुब्धः प्रमत्तश्च पराधीनश्च राक्षस। विषये स्वे समुत्पन्नं यद् भयं नावबुध्यसे
But you, O Rākṣasa, are greedy, careless, and dependent on others; you do not perceive the danger that has arisen in your own realm.
तीक्ष्णमल्पप्रदातारं प्रमत्तं गर्वितं शठम्। व्यसने सर्वभूतानि नाभिधावन्ति पार्थिवम्
No beings rush to a king who is harsh, gives little, is careless, arrogant, and deceitful, when he is in distress.
अतिमानिनमग्राह्यमात्मसम्भावितं नरम्। क्रोधनं व्यसने हन्ति स्वजनोऽपि नराधिपम्
Even his own people destroy a king who is excessively proud, unapproachable, self-conceited, and angry, when he is in trouble.
नानुतिष्ठति कार्याणि भयेषु न बिभेति च। क्षिप्रं राज्याच्च्युतो दीनस्तृणैस्तुल्यो भवेदिह
He who does not perform his duties and does not fear in times of danger is quickly deprived of his kingdom, becomes miserable, and is regarded as worthless as grass here.
