सताराग्रहनक्षत्रं नभश्चाप्यवसादयेत्। असौ रामस्तु सीदन्तीं श्रीमानभ्युद्धरेन्महीम्
He could bring down the sky with its stars, planets, and constellations; that glorious Rama could raise up the sinking earth.
भित्त्वा वेलां समुद्रस्य लोकानाप्लावयेद् विभुः। वेगं वापि समुद्रस्य वायुं वा विधमेच्छरैः
Piercing the ocean’s shore, he could flood the worlds; he could disperse the force of the ocean or the wind with his arrows.
संहृत्य वा पुनर्लोकान् विक्रमेण महायशाः। शक्तः श्रेष्ठः स पुरुषः स्रष्टुं पुनरपि प्रजाः
He could withdraw the worlds with his valor, and that supreme man is capable of creating living beings again.
नहि रामो दशग्रीव शक्यो जेतुं रणे त्वया। रक्षसां वापि लोकेन स्वर्गः पापजनैरिव
Rama cannot be defeated by you in battle, O ten-headed one, nor by the world of rakshasas, just as heaven cannot be attained by the wicked.
न तं वध्यमहं मन्ये सर्वैर्देवासुरैरपि। अयं तस्य वधोपायस्तन्ममैकमनाः शृणु
I do not consider him killable even by all the gods and demons together; but there is a way to kill him—listen to me with single-minded attention.
भार्या तस्योत्तमा लोके सीता नाम सुमध्यमा। श्यामा समविभक्ताङ्गी स्त्रीरत्नं रत्नभूषिता
His wife, renowned in the world, is named Sita, slender-waisted, dark-complexioned, with well-proportioned limbs, a jewel among women, adorned with jewels.
नैव देवी न गन्धर्वी नाप्सरा न च पन्नगी। तुल्या सीमन्तिनी तस्या मानुषी तु कुतो भवेत्
Neither goddess, nor gandharvi, nor apsara, nor serpent-woman is equal to her; how could a human woman compare?
अरोचयत तद्वाक्यं रावणो राक्षसाधिपः। चिन्तयित्वा महाबाहुरकम्पनमुवाच ह
Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, approved those words; after reflecting, the mighty-armed one spoke to Akampana.
बाढं कल्यं गमिष्यामि ह्येकः सारथिना सह। आनेष्यामि च वैदेहीमिमां हृष्टो महापुरीम्
Certainly, dear one, I will go at once, alone with my charioteer; I will joyfully bring back this Vaidehī to the great city.
तदेवमुक्त्वा प्रययौ खरयुक्तेन रावणः। रथेनादित्यवर्णेन दिशः सर्वाः प्रकाशयन्
Having spoken thus, Rāvaṇa departed in a chariot drawn by mules, shining like the sun, illuminating all directions.
स रथो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य नक्षत्रपथगो महान्। चञ्चूर्यमाणः शुशुभे जलदे चन्द्रमा इव
That great chariot of the lord of the rākṣasas, moving along the path of the stars, shone as it thundered forth, like the moon among clouds.
स दूरे चाश्रमं गत्वा ताटकेयमुपागमत्। मारीचेनार्चितो राजा भक्ष्यभोज्यैरमानुषैः
Having gone a long distance, he reached the hermitage of Tāṭakā; there, the king was honored by Mārīca with supernatural foods and delicacies.
तं स्वयं पूजयित्वा तु आसनेनोदकेन च। अर्थोपहितया वाचा मारीचो वाक्यमब्रवीत्
After personally honoring him with a seat and water, and with words full of purpose, Mārīca spoke to him.
कच्चित् सकुशलं राजँल्लोकानां राक्षसाधिप। आशङ्के नाधिजाने त्वं यतस्तूर्णमुपागतः
O king, lord of the rākṣasas, is all well with your people? I wonder, for I do not know, why you have come here so quickly.
एवमुक्तो महातेजा मारीचेन स रावणः। ततः पश्चादिदं वाक्यमब्रवीद् वाक्यकोविदः
Thus addressed by Mārīca, the mighty Rāvaṇa, skilled in speech, then spoke these words:
आरक्षो मे हतस्तात रामेणाक्लिष्टकारिणा। जनस्थानमवध्यं तत् सर्वं युधि निपातितम्
My protector was slain, dear one, by Rāma, who acts without fault; all of Janasthāna, which was invincible, has been destroyed in battle.
तस्य मे कुरु साचिव्यं तस्य भार्यापहारणे। राक्षसेन्द्रवचः श्रुत्वा मारीचो वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Therefore, assist me in the abduction of his wife; hearing the words of the king of the rākṣasas, Mārīca spoke.
आख्याता केन वा सीता मित्ररूपेण शत्रुणा। त्वया राक्षसशार्दूल को न नन्दति नन्दितः
By whom has Sītā been pointed out, by a friend who is truly an enemy? O tiger among rākṣasas, who that is delighted does not rejoice with you?
सीतामिहानयस्वेति को ब्रवीति ब्रवीहि मे। रक्षोलोकस्य सर्वस्य कः शृङ्गं छेत्तुमिच्छति
Who says to you, 'Bring Sītā here'? Tell me. Who among all the rākṣasas wishes to cut off his own horn?
प्रोत्साहयति यश्च त्वां स च शत्रुरसंशयम्। आशीविषमुखाद् दंष्ट्रामुद्धर्तुं चेच्छति त्वया
And whoever encourages you is surely an enemy, wishing you to draw the fang from the mouth of a venomous serpent.
कर्मणानेन केनासि कापथं प्रतिपादितः। सुखसुप्तस्य ते राजन् प्रहृतं केन मूर्धनि
By whose act have you been set upon this evil path? Who struck you on the head while you were sleeping peacefully, O king?
विशुद्धवंशाभिजनाग्रहस्त- तेजोमदः संस्थितदोर्विषाणः। उदीक्षितुं रावण नेह युक्तः स संयुगे राघवगन्धहस्ती
He, born of a pure and noble line, with the pride of power, steadfast as an elephant with mighty tusks—Rāvaṇa, it is not fitting to confront him, that Rāghava, the elephant among men, in battle.
असौ रणान्तःस्थितिसंधिवालो विदग्धरक्षोमृगहा नृसिंहः। सुप्तस्त्वया बोधयितुं न शक्यः शराङ्गपूर्णो निशितासिदंष्ट्रः
He, the lion among men, skilled in battle, destroyer of clever rākṣasas, stands in the midst of war; you cannot awaken him while he sleeps, filled with arrows and sharp swords as his fangs.
चापापहारे भुजवेगपङ्के शरोर्मिमाले सुमहाहवौघे। न रामपातालमुखेऽतिघोरे प्रस्कन्दितुं राक्षसराज युक्तम्
In the mud of his arm's strength, in the flood of great battle, with waves of arrows and the theft of bows—O king of rākṣasas, it is not right to leap into Rāma's dreadful mouth, like the underworld.
प्रसीद लङ्केश्वर राक्षसेन्द्र लङ्कां प्रसन्नो भव साधु गच्छ। त्वं स्वेषु दारेषु रमस्व नित्यं रामः सभार्यो रमतां वनेषु
Be gracious, lord of Laṅkā, king of rākṣasas; be pleased, return to Laṅkā. Always delight with your own wives; let Rāma with his wife enjoy the forests.
एवमुक्तो दशग्रीवो मारीचेन स रावणः। न्यवर्तत पुरीं लङ्कां विवेश च गृहोत्तमम्
Thus addressed by Mārīca, the ten-headed Rāvaṇa turned back and entered his excellent house in Laṅkā.

ततः शूर्पणखा दृष्ट्वा सहस्राणि चतुर्दश। हतान्येकेन रामेण रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम्
Then, Śūrpaṇakhā saw that fourteen thousand fierce and mighty Rākṣasas had been slain by Rāma alone.
दूषणं च खरं चैव हतं त्रिशिरसं रणे। दृष्ट्वा पुनर्महानादान् ननाद जलदोपमा
She saw Dūṣaṇa, Khara, and Triśiras killed in battle, and again let out a great roar, like a thundercloud.
सा दृष्ट्वा कर्म रामस्य कृतमन्यैः सुदुष्करम्। जगाम परमोद्विग्ना लङ्कां रावणपालिताम्
Seeing Rāma's deed—so difficult for others to accomplish—she became deeply agitated and went to Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa.
