Seeing Dūṣaṇa fallen and slain on the ground in battle, all beings honored Kakutstha, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!'
At that moment, three furious leaders of the army, as if bound by the noose of death, joined forces and rushed at Rāma.
Mahākapāla, Sthūlākṣa, and the mighty Pramāthī—the demon Mahākapāla raised his massive spear.
Sthūlākṣa seized a pattiśa, and Pramāthī a battle-axe; seeing them charging, Rāghava met them with sharp arrows.
He received them with arrows whose tips were keen, as one would receive unwelcome guests; the delight of the Raghus cut off Mahākapāla’s head.
With countless torrents of arrows, he crushed Pramāthī, and with shafts filled the large eyes of Sthūlākṣa.
Struck down, he fell to the earth like a great tree with its branches lopped; in a moment, Rāma, enraged, destroyed Dūṣaṇa’s five thousand followers.
Having slain those five thousand, he sent them to the abode of Yama; hearing of Dūṣaṇa’s death and that of his followers,
Khara, enraged, ordered the mighty generals of the army: 'Dūṣaṇa has been slain in battle, along with his attendants.'
'With the great army, fight Rāma, that mere man; with weapons of every kind, let all the rākṣasas slay him!'
Unconquerable Karavīrākṣa, harsh Paruṣa, Kālakārmuka, Hemamālī, Mahāmālī, Sarpāsya, and Rudhirāśana—
These twelve of great valor, commanders of troops with their forces, charged at Rāma, releasing excellent arrows.
Then the radiant one struck down the rest of that army with arrows shining like fire, adorned with gold and diamond.
Those arrows, with golden feathers, blazed like smoky flames, and struck down the rākṣasas as thunderbolts would fell great trees.
Rāma struck down a hundred rākṣasas with a hundred arrows, and a thousand with a thousand, on the battlefield.
Their armor and ornaments shattered, their bows broken and splintered, the night-wandering demons, stained with blood, fell to the earth.
The earth was entirely covered, as with sacred grass in a great altar, by those fallen in battle—hair unbound, drenched in blood.
In that moment, the forest, filled with slain rākṣasas, became exceedingly dreadful, resembling hell, muddied with flesh and blood.
Fourteen thousand rākṣasas of terrible deeds were slain by Rāma alone, a man fighting on foot.
Of that entire army, only Khara, the mighty chariot-warrior, Triśiras the rākṣasa, and Rāma, the destroyer of foes, remained.
The rest, all of great valor, fierce and formidable, were slain in the midst of battle by Rāma, elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa.
Then, seeing his formidable force destroyed by the mighty Rāma in the great conflict, Khara approached Rāma in his grand chariot, like Indra with raised thunderbolt.

Hear now the twenty-seventh chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Araṇyakāṇḍa.
As Khara advanced toward Rāma, the commander Triśiras, a rākṣasa by name, confronted him and spoke thus.
Appoint me, who am valiant, and you withdraw from this rashness; behold Rāma, mighty-armed, struck down in battle.
I pledge to you the truth, and I take up arms: I shall slay Rāma, who deserves death among all the rākṣasas.
Either I shall be death to him in battle, or he to me; restrain your eagerness for combat for a moment and be a witness.
If Rāma is slain, you will joyfully return to Janasthāna; or, if I am killed, you will go forth to fight Rāma.
Khara, persuaded by Triśiras out of desire for death, granted permission, saying, 'Go, fight,' and Triśiras advanced toward Rāma.
Triśiras, riding a radiant chariot yoked with horses, rushed at Rāma in battle like a three-peaked mountain.
