Śyenī gave birth to hawks and vultures of great energy; Dhṛtarāṣṭrī bore swans and all kinds of Kalahaṃsas.
She also gave birth to Cakravākas, O fortunate one; Śukī bore Natā, and Natā's daughter was Vinatā.
Krodhavaśā, O Rāma, gave birth to ten offspring from herself: Mṛgī, Mṛgamaṇḍā, Harī, and Bhadramadā.
Mātaṅgī, Śārdūlī, Śvetā, and Surabhī as well; Surasā and Kadrū, endowed with all auspicious marks.
All deer are the offspring of Mṛgī, O best of men; bears from Mṛgamaṇḍā, and Sṛmaras and Camaras likewise.
Then Bhadramadā bore a daughter named Irāvatī; her son was Airāvata, the great elephant, lord of the world.
Harī's offspring were monkeys, ascetic in nature; Śārdūlī gave birth to Golāṃgūlas, and to tiger cubs as well.
Mātaṅgī's offspring were elephants, O foremost of men; Śvetā, O descendant of Kakutstha, gave birth to the elephant of the directions.
Then, O Rama, two daughters were born to Surabhi: Rohini, auspicious and blessed, and Gandharvi, renowned among all.
Rohini gave birth to cows, Gandharvi to swift horses; Surasa gave birth to serpents, and Kadru to nagas, O Rama.
Manu generated human beings from the great sage Kasyapa: Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras, O best of men.
From his mouth were born the Brahmins, from his chest the Kshatriyas; from his thighs came the Vaishyas, and from his feet the Shudras—so it is declared in the scriptures.
She also produced all trees bearing virtuous fruits, and even the fireless ones; Vinata and Shuki were granddaughters, Kadru and Surasa were sisters.
Kadru gave birth to a thousand serpents, O supporter of the earth; Vinata had two sons: Garuda and Aruna.
From Aruna I was born, and my elder brother is Sampati; know me as Jatayu, son of Syeni, O subduer of foes.
If you wish, I will be your companion here; for this dense forest is frequented by beasts and demons. While you and Lakshmana are away, I will protect Sita, dear child.
Raghava honored Jatayu, embraced him joyfully, and bowed; for he had often heard from his father about their friendship with Jatayu.
Then, entrusting Maithili Sita to that mighty bird, he went to Panchavati with Lakshmana, eager to destroy his enemies like fire consumes moths.
Listen to the fifteenth sarga in the glorious Valmiki Ramayana, Aranyakanda.
Then, having reached Panchavati, filled with many serpents and deer, Rama spoke to his brother Lakshmana, radiant in his splendor.
We have arrived, as the sage directed, at the place he described; this is the region of Panchavati, gentle one, a forest blossoming with flowers.
Let your gaze survey all around, for you are skilled in the forest; in which place here do you think our hermitage should be built?
Find such a place, Lakshmana, where Vaidehi, you, and I may delight, and which is near a water source.
Where the forest is charming and the water delightful, and where firewood, flowers, sacred grass, and water are close at hand.
Thus addressed by Rama, Lakshmana, with joined palms, spoke these words to Kakutstha in Sita's presence.
O Kakutstha, I am dependent on you, even if you remain here a hundred years; but tell me to build the hermitage myself in a pleasing place.
Greatly pleased by Lakshmana’s words, the illustrious one thoughtfully chose a place endowed with every virtue.
He approached that delightful spot for the hermitage, took Lakshmana by the hand, and spoke to him.
This land is level and splendid, covered with blossoming trees; here, gentle one, you should properly build the hermitage.
Nearby is a lovely lotus pond, fragrant and shining like the sun, adorned with blooming lotuses.
