इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदयोध्याकाण्डे द्वादशोत्तरशततम: सर्ग:
Thus ends the one hundred and twelfth sarga in the glorious Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the ancient epic, the holy Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.

Then Bharata, placing the sandals on his head, ascended the chariot, delighted, accompanied by Shatrughna.
वसिष्ऺठो वामदेवश्च जाबालिश्च दृढव्रत: । अग्रत: प्रययु: सर्वे मन्त्रिणो मन्त्रपूजिता: ।। २.११३.
Vasiṣṭha, Vāmadeva, and Jābāli, steadfast in their vows, all the ministers honored by counsel, proceeded ahead.
मन्दाकिनीं नदीं रम्यां प्राङ्मुखास्ते ययुस्तदा । प्रदक्षिणं च कुर्वाणाश्चित्रकूटं महागिरिम् ।। २.११३.
They then moved eastward, towards the beautiful Mandākinī river, circumambulating the great mountain Chitrakūṭa.
पश्यन् धातुसहस्राणि रम्याणि विविधानि च । प्रययौ तस्य पार्श्वेन ससैन्यो भरतस्तदा ।। २.११३.
Observing thousands of delightful minerals and various sights, Bharata, with his army, proceeded alongside.
अदूराच्चित्रकूटस्य ददर्श भरतस्तदा । आश्रमं यत्र स मुनिर्भरद्वाज: कृतालय: ।। २.११३.
Not far from Chitrakūṭa, Bharata saw the hermitage where the sage Bharadvāja had established his abode.
स तमाश्रममागम्य भरद्वाजस्य बुद्धिमान् । अवतीर्य रथात् पादौ ववन्दे भरतस्तदा ।। २.११३.
Arriving at that hermitage of Bharadvāja, wise Bharata descended from his chariot and bowed at the sage's feet.
ततो हृष्टो भरद्वाजो भरतं वाक्यमब्रवीत् । अपि कृत्यं कृतं तात रामेण च समागतम् ।। २.११३.
Then, delighted, Bharadvāja spoke to Bharata: 'O dear one, has your task been accomplished, and have you met with Rāma?'
एवमुक्त: स तु ततो भरद्वाजेन धीमता । प्रत्युवाच भरद्वाजं भरतो भ्रातृवत्सल: ।। २.११३.
Thus addressed by the wise Bharadvāja, Bharata, devoted to his brother, replied to the sage:
स याच्यमानो गुरुणा मया च दृढविक्रम: । राघव: परमप्रीतो वसिष्ठं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।। २.११३.
He, though urged by his teacher and by me, steadfast and greatly pleased, Rāghava spoke to Vasiṣṭha.
पितु: प्रतिज्ञां तामेव पालयिष्यामि तत्त्वत: । चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि या प्रतिज्ञा पितुर्मम ।। २.११३.
'I will uphold my father's promise exactly as it was made; for fourteen years, as my father vowed.'
एवमुक्तो महाप्राज्ञो वसिष्ठ: प्रत्युवाच ह । वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकुशलं राघवं वचनं महत् ।। २.११३.
Thus addressed, the highly wise Vasiṣṭha replied, skillful in words, with a great speech to Rāghava.
एते प्रयच्छ संहृष्ट: पादुके हेमभूषिते । अयोध्यायां महाप्राज्ञ योगक्षेमकरे तव ।। २.११३.
Give these adorned golden sandals with joy, O wise one, for they will safeguard Ayodhya’s welfare under your care.
एवमुक्तो वसिष्ठेन राघव: प्राङ्मुख: स्थित: । पादुके अधिरुह्यैते मम राज्याय वै ददौ ।। २.११३.
Thus addressed by Vasiṣṭha, Rāghava, standing facing east, mounted these sandals and entrusted them for my rule.
निवृत्तो ऽहमनुज्ञातो रामेण सुमहात्मना । अयोध्यामेव गच्छामि गृहीत्वा पादुके शुभे ।। २.११३.
I am now withdrawn and permitted by the great-souled Rāma; I return to Ayodhya, bearing these auspicious sandals.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं भरतस्य महात्मन: । भरद्वाज: शुभतरं मुनिर्वाक्यमुवाच तम् ।। २.११३.
Hearing this noble speech from the great-hearted Bharata, the sage Bharadvāja spoke to him words even more auspicious.
नैतच्चित्रं नरव्याघ्र शीलवृत्तवतां वर । यदार्यं त्वयि तिष्ठेत्तु निम्ने सृष्टमिवोदकम् ।। २.११३.
This is not surprising, O tiger among men, best among those of noble conduct; as water flows naturally into a hollow, so does virtue reside in you.
अमृत: स महाबाहु: पिता दशरथस्तव । यस्य त्वमीदृश: पुत्रो धर्मज्ञो धर्मवत्सल: ।। २.११३.
Your father Daśaratha, mighty-armed, is like nectar, for you are such a son—knower of dharma and devoted to righteousness.
तमृषिं तु महात्मानमुक्तवाक्यं कृताञ्जलि: । आमतन्त्रयितुमारेभे चरणावुपगृह्य च ।। २.११३.
To that great-souled sage, having spoken, Bharata with joined palms began to take leave, touching his feet.
तत: प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा भरद्वाजं पुन:पुन: । भरतस्तु ययौ श्रीमानयोध्यां सह मन्त्रिभि: ।। २.११३.
Then, having circled Bharadvāja repeatedly, the illustrious Bharata departed for Ayodhya with his ministers.
यानैश्च शकटैश्चैव हयैर्नागैश्च सा चमू: । पुनर्निवृत्ता विस्तीर्णा भरतस्यानुयायिनी ।। २.११३.
With chariots, wagons, horses, elephants, the vast army returned, following Bharata.
ततस्ते यमुनां दिव्यां नदीं तीर्त्वोर्मिमालिनीम् । ददृशुस्तां पुन: सर्वे गङ्गां शुभजलां नदीम् ।। २.११३.
Then they saw the divine Yamunā river, adorned with waves, and again all beheld the Ganges, the auspicious river with pure waters.
तां रम्यजलसम्पूर्णां सन्तीर्य सहबान्धव: । शृङ्गिबेरपुरं रम्यं प्रविवेश ससैनिक: ।। २.११३.
Having crossed that lovely, water-filled river with their companions, they entered the charming city of Śṛṅgibera with their troops.
शृङ्गिबेरपुराद्भूयस्त्वयोध्यां संददर्श ह ।। २.११३.
From Śṛṅgibera city, they beheld Ayodhya once more.
अयोध्यां च ततो दृष्ट्वा पित्रा भ्रात्रा विवर्जिताम् । भरतो दु:खसन्तप्त: सारथिं चेदमब्रवीत् ।। २.११३.
Then, seeing Ayodhya bereft of father and brother, Bharata, tormented by sorrow, spoke thus to his charioteer.
सारथे पश्य विध्वस्ता सायोध्या न प्रकाशते । निराकारा निरानन्दा दीना प्रतिहतस्वरा ।। २.११३.
Charioteer, look! Ayodhya is ruined, it does not shine; formless, joyless, distressed, its sounds suppressed.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदयोध्याकाण्डे त्रयोदशोत्तरशततम: सर्ग:
Thus ends the one hundred thirteenth chapter of the glorious Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa in the venerable Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the ancient epic.

With a chariot whose sound was deep and resonant, the illustrious Bharata swiftly entered Ayodhya.
बिडालोलूकचरितामालीननरवारणाम् । तिमिराभ्याहतां कालीमप्रकाशां निशामिव ।। २.११४.
He saw Ayodhya, inhabited by owls and vultures, filled with elephants and men, struck by darkness, gloomy and dim like the night.
राहुशत्रो: प्रियां पत्नीं श्रिया प्रज्वलितप्रभाम् । ग्रहेणाभ्युत्थिते नैकां रोहिणीमिव पीडिताम् ।। २.११४.
Like Rohiṇī oppressed by the rising planet, he saw his beloved wife, radiant in splendor, afflicted by the approach of the enemy Rāhu.
