स तु राममवेक्षन्तं सुमन्त्रं प्रेक्ष्य दुर्मना: । कुशोत्तरमुपस्थाप्य भूमावेवास्तरत् स्वयम् ।। २.१११.
Seeing Rāma, Sumitra, distressed, placed the kuśa mat on the ground and himself lay upon it.
तमुवाच महातेजा रामो राजर्षिसत्तम: । किं मां भरत कुर्वाणं तात प्रत्युपवेक्ष्यसि ।। २.१११.
Rāma, the most illustrious royal sage, addressed him: Why, O Bharata, do you wish to sit beside me as I do this?
ब्राह्मणो ह्येकपार्श्वेन नरान् रोद्धुमिहार्हति । न तु मूर्द्धाभिषिक्तानां विधि: प्रत्युपवेशने ।। २.१११.
A brāhmaṇa may sit on one side to restrain men here, but for those who have been anointed, there is no prescribed sitting in protest.
उत्तिष्ठ नरशार्दूल हित्वैतद्दारुणं व्रतम् । पुरवर्य्यामित: क्षिप्रमयोध्यां याहि राघव ।। २.१११.
Rise up, O tiger among men, abandon this harsh vow; swiftly go to Ayodhyā, the foremost city, O Rāghava.
आसीनस्त्वेव भरत: पौरजानपदं जनम् । उवाच सर्वत: प्रेक्ष्य किमार्यं नानुशासथ ।। २.१११.
But Bharata, remaining seated, looked all around at the townspeople and countryfolk, and said: Why do you not instruct my noble brother?
ते तमूचुर्महात्मानं पौरजानपदा जना: । काकुत्स्थमभिजानीम: सम्यग्वदति राघव: ।। २.१११.
The townspeople and countryfolk replied to the great-souled one: We recognize Kakutstha; Rāghava speaks rightly.
एषो ऽपि हि महाभाग: पितुर्वचसि तिष्ठति । अत एव न शक्ता: स्मो व्यावर्त्तयितुमञ्जसा ।। २.१११.
He too, greatly fortunate, abides by his father's command; therefore, we are not able to turn him aside directly.
तेषामाज्ञाय वचनं रामो वचनमब्रवीत् । एवं निबोध वचनं सुहृदां धर्मचक्षुषाम् ।। २.१११.
Hearing their words, Rāma spoke: Thus, listen to the words of friends who see with the eye of righteousness.
एतच्चैवोभयं श्रुत्वा सम्यक् सम्पश्य राघव । उत्तिष्ठ त्वं महाबाहो मां च स्पृश तथोदकम् ।। २.१११.
Having heard both these matters fully and rightly, Rāghava, arise, O mighty-armed one, and touch the water along with me.
अथोत्थाय जलं स्पृष्ट्वा भरतो वाक्यमब्रवीत् । श्रृण्वन्तु मे परिषदो मन्त्रिण: श्रेणयस्तथा ।। २.१११.
Then, having risen and touched the water, Bharata spoke these words: 'Let the assembly, the counselors, and the guilds listen to me.'
न याचे पितरं राज्यं नानुशासामि मातरम् । आर्यं परमधर्मज्ञं नानुजानामि राघवम् ।। २.१११.
I do not ask my father for the kingdom, nor do I command my mother; I do not permit the noble Rāghava, knower of the highest dharma.
यदि त्ववश्यं वस्तव्यं कर्त्तव्यं च पितुर्वच: । अहमेव निवत्स्यामि चतुर्दश समा वने ।। २.१११.
If it is absolutely necessary to fulfill my father's command, then I myself will dwell in the forest for fourteen years.
धर्मात्मा तस्य तथ्येन भ्रातुर्वाक्येन विस्मित: । उवाच राम: सम्प्रेक्ष्य पौरजानपदं जनम् ।। २.१११.
The righteous Rāma, astonished by his brother's truthful words, looked upon the citizens and countryfolk and spoke.
विक्रीतमाहितं क्रीतं यत् पित्रा जीवता मम । न तल्लोपयितुं शक्यं मया वा भरतेन वा ।। २.१११.
What was promised, pledged, and granted by my living father cannot be undone either by me or by Bharata.
अपधिर्न मया कार्य्यो वनवासे जुगुप्सित: । युक्तमुक्तं च कैकेय्या पित्रा मे सुकृतं कृतम् ।। २.१११.
I must not act contrary to dharma, nor is forest-dwelling to be despised by me; what was rightly spoken by Kaikeyī and done by my father was well done.
जानामि भरतं क्षान्तं गुरुसत्कारकारिणम् । सर्वमेवात्र कल्याणं सत्यसन्धे महात्मनि ।। २.१११.
I know Bharata to be patient and one who honors elders; in this matter, all is well with this great soul, steadfast in truth.
अनेन धर्मशीलेन वनात् प्रत्यागत: पुन: । भ्रात्रा सह भविष्यामि पृथिव्या: पतिरुत्तम: ।। २.१११.
When I return from the forest with this righteous brother, I shall become, together with him, the foremost lord of the earth.
वृतो राजा हि कैकेय्या मया तद्वचनं कृतम् । अनृतन्मोचयानेन पितरं तं महीपतिम् ।। २.१११.
The king, at Kaikeyī's urging, was bound by my promise; let Bharata free that great king, our father, from falsehood.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदयोध्याकाण्डे एकादशोत्तरशततम: सर्ग:
Thus ends the one hundred and eleventh sarga in the glorious Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the first great poem.

The assembled great sages, amazed at the meeting of the two brothers, whose energy was incomparable, felt their hair stand on end.
अन्तर्हितास्त्वृषिगणा: सिद्धाश्च परमर्षय: । तौ भ्रातरौ महात्मानौ महात्मानौ काकुत्स्थौ प्रशशंसिरे ।। २.११२.
Then the groups of seers and perfected sages, though invisible, praised those two great-souled sons of Kakutstha.
स धन्यो यस्य पुत्रौ द्वौ धर्मज्ञौ धर्मविक्रमौ । श्रुत्वा वयं हि सम्भाषामुभयो: स्पृहयामहे ।। २.११२.
Blessed is he whose two sons are both wise in dharma and mighty in righteousness; hearing their conversation, we all long for such sons.
ततस्त्वृषिगणा: क्षिप्रं दशग्रीववधैषिण: । भरतं राजशार्दूलमित्यूचु: सङ्गता वच: ।। २.११२.
Then the groups of seers, eager for the destruction of the ten-headed one, quickly gathered and spoke these words to Bharata, the tiger among kings.
कुले जात महाप्राज्ञ महावृत्त महायश: । ग्राह्यं रामस्य वाक्यं ते पितरं यद्यवेक्षसे ।। २.११२.
Born in a noble line, great in wisdom, conduct, and fame, you should accept Rāma's words if you regard your father.
सदानृणमिमं रामं वयमिच्छामहे पितु: । अनृणत्वाच्च कैकेय्या: स्वर्गं दशरथो गत: ।। २.११२.
We wish that Rāma may always be free of debt to his father; and because of Kaikeyī, Daśaratha has attained heaven, being free from debt.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं गन्धर्वा: समहर्षय: । राजर्षयश्चैव तदा सर्वे स्वांस्वां गतिं गता: ।। २.११२.
Having spoken these words, the Gandharvas, great sages, and royal sages all departed each to their own abode.
ह्लादितस्तेन वाक्येन शुभेन शुभदर्शन: । राम: संहृष्टवदनस्तानृषीनभ्यपूजयत् ।। २.११२.
Delighted by those auspicious words, Rama, whose appearance was auspicious, honored those sages with a joyful face.
स्रस्तगात्रस्तु भरत: स वाचा सज्जमानया । कृताञ्जलिरिदं वाक्यं राघवं पुनरब्रवीत् ।। २.११२.
Bharata, his limbs weakened, with hands joined and voice trembling, again spoke these words to Raghava.
राजधर्ममनुप्रेक्ष्य कुलधर्मानुसन्ततिम् । कर्त्तुमर्हसि काकुत्स्थ मम मातुश्च याचनाम् ।। २.११२.
Considering royal duty and the tradition of our lineage, you ought to fulfill the request of my mother and myself, O Kakutstha.
रक्षितुं सुमहद्राज्यमहमेकस्तु नोत्सहे । पौरजानपदांश्चापि रक्तान् रञ्जयितुं तथा ।। २.११२.
I alone am not able to protect this vast kingdom, nor to please the citizens and countryfolk who are devoted.
