इदं निखिलमव्यग्रं राज्यं पित्र्यमकण्टकम् । अनुशाधि स्वधर्मेण धर्मज्ञ सह बान्धवै: ।। २.१०६.
Rule this entire, undisturbed, ancestral kingdom, free from thorns, in accordance with your own dharma, O knower of dharma, together with your kinsmen.
इहैव त्वा ऽभिषिञ्चन्तु सर्वा: प्रकृतय: सह । ऋत्विज: सवसिष्ठाश्च मन्त्रवन्मन्त्रकोविदा: ।। २.१०६.
Let all the ministers, along with the priests and Vasiṣṭha, skilled in mantras, anoint you as king right here.
अभिषिक्तस्त्वमस्माभिरयोध्यां पालने व्रज । विजित्य तरसा लोकान् मरुद्भिरिव वासव: ।। २.१०६.
Once you are consecrated by us, go forth to govern Ayodhya, having conquered the worlds with your might, like Indra with the Maruts.
ऋणानि त्रीण्यपाकुर्वन् दुर्हृद: साधु निर्द्दहन् । सुहृदस्तर्पयन् कामैस्त्वमेवात्रानुशाधि माम् ।। २.१०६.
By repaying the three debts, burning away the wicked, gratifying friends with desires, you alone should rule over me here.
अद्यार्य मुदिता: सन्तु सुहृदस्ते ऽभिषेचने । अद्य भीता: पलायन्तां दुर्हृदस्ते दिशो दश ।। २.१०६.
Today, may your true friends rejoice at your consecration, and may your ill-wishers, filled with fear, flee in all ten directions.
आक्रोशं मम मातुश्च प्रमृज्य पुरुषर्षभ । अद्य तत्रभवन्तं च पितरं रक्ष किल्बिषात् ।। २.१०६.
Wipe away the reproach upon my mother and myself, O best of men, and today protect our father there from sin.
शिरसा त्वा ऽभियाचे ऽहं कुरुष्व करुणां मयि । बान्धवेषु च सर्वेषु भूतेष्विव महेश्वर: ।। २.१०६.
With my head bowed, I beg you: show compassion to me and to all our relatives, as the great Lord does to all beings.
अथैतत् पृष्ठत: कृत्वा वनमेव भवानित: । गमिष्यति गमिष्यामि भवता सार्द्धमप्यहम् ।। २.१०६.
But if, having set this aside, you still choose to go to the forest, then I too will go with you.
तथाहि रामो भरतेन ताम्यता प्रसाद्यमान: शिरसा महीपति: । न चैव चक्रे गमनाय सत्त्ववान् मतिं पितुस्तद्वचने व्यवस्थित: ।। २.१०६.
Thus, though Bharata, tormented, pleaded with him, bowing his head, steadfast Rāma did not resolve to return, remaining firm in his father's command.
तदद्भुतं स्थैर्यमवेक्ष्य राघवे समं जनो हर्षमवाप दु:खित: । न यात्ययोध्यामिति दु:खितो ऽभवत् स्थिरप्रतिज्ञत्वमवेक्ष्य हर्षित: ।। २.१०६.
Seeing such wondrous steadfastness in Rāghava, the people, though sorrowful that he would not return to Ayodhyā, felt joy at his unwavering resolve.
तमृत्विजो नैगमयूथवल्लभास्तदा विंसज्ञाश्रुकलाश्च मातर: । तथा ब्रुवाणं भरतं प्रतुष्टुवु: प्रणम्य रामं च ययाचिरे सह ।। २.१०६.
Then the priests, the beloveds of the city elders, and the mothers, their eyes filled with tears, praised Bharata as he spoke thus, and together entreated Rāma.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदयोध्याकाण्डे षडुत्तरशततम: सर्ग:
Thus ends the one hundred and sixth sarga in the glorious Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the ancient and revered Rāmāyaṇa composed by Vālmīki.

Again, as Bharata spoke thus, the illustrious elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa, honored among his kin, replied to him.
उपपन्नमिदं वाक्यं यत्त्वमेवमभाषथा: । जात: पुत्रो दशरथात् कैकेय्यां राजसत्तमात् ।। २.१०७.
What you have said is fitting, for you are indeed the son of Daśaratha and the noble Kaikeyī, O best among kings.
पुरा भ्रात: पिता न: स मातरं ते समुद्वहन् । मातामहे समाश्रौषीद्राज्यशुल्कमनुत्तमम् ।। २.१०७.
Long ago, brother, our father, when marrying your mother, heard from your maternal grandfather of the unparalleled royal dowry.
दैवासुरे च सङ्ग्रामे जनन्यै तव पार्थिव: । सम्प्रहृष्टो ददौ राजा वरमाराधित: प्रभु: ।। २.१०७.
In the battle between gods and demons, your mother’s father, the king, delighted, granted her a boon, being well-pleased.
तत: सा सम्प्रतिश्राव्य तव माता यशस्विनी । अयाचत नरश्रेष्ठं द्वौ वरौ वरवर्णिनी ।। २.१०७.
Then, having received that promise, your renowned mother, O best of men, asked the king for two boons.
तव राज्यं नरव्याघ्र मम प्रव्राजनं तथा । तौ च राजा तदा तस्यै नियुक्त: प्रददौ वरौ ।। २.१०७.
She requested your kingship, O tiger among men, and my exile; and the king then granted her those two boons as she desired.
तेन पित्रा ऽहमप्यत्र नियुक्त: पुरुषर्षभ । चतुर्दश वने वासं वर्षाणि वरदानिकम् ।। २.१०७.
By my father’s command, O best of men, I too was bound to dwell in the forest for fourteen years, as a giver of boons.
सो ऽहं वनमिदं प्राप्तो निर्जनं लक्ष्मणान्वित: । सीतया चाप्रतिद्वन्द्व: सत्यवादे स्थित: पितु: ।। २.१०७.
Thus I have come to this lonely forest, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā, steadfast in truth and in my father’s word.
भवानपि तथेत्येव पितरं सत्यवादिनम् । कर्त्तुमर्हति राजेन्द्र क्षिप्रमेवाभिषेचनात् ।। २.१०७.
You too, O king among men, should likewise swiftly fulfill the command of our truthful father by accepting the consecration.
ऋणान्मोचय राजानं मत्कृते भरत प्रभुम् । पितरं चापि धर्मज्ञं मातरं चाभिनन्दय ।। २.१०७.
Free the king, our lord, from his debts on my account, O Bharata, knower of righteousness, and honor our father and mother.
श्रूयते हि पुरा तात श्रुतिर्गीता यशस्विना । गयेन यजमानेन गयेष्वेव पितऽन् प्रति ।। २.१०७.
Long ago, O dear one, it is heard that a celebrated hymn was sung by Gaya, the sacrificer, for his father at Gaya itself.
पुन्नाम्नो नरकाद्यस्मात् पितरं त्रायते सुत: । तस्मात् पुत्र इति प्रोक्त: पितऽन् यत्पाति वा सुत: ।। २.१०७.
Because a son saves his father from the hell called Put, therefore he is called 'putra,' since he protects his father or leads him.
एष्टव्या बहव: पुत्रा गुणवन्तो बहुश्रुता: । तेषां वै समवेतानामपि कश्चिद्गयां व्रजेत् ।। २.१०७.
Many sons should be begotten, virtuous and learned; for among them, even if many are gathered, perhaps one will go to Gaya.
एवं राजर्षय: सर्वे प्रतीता राजनन्दन । तस्मात् त्राहि नरश्रेष्ठ पितरं नरकात् प्रभो ।। २.१०७.
Thus, all royal sages have believed, O delight of the kings; therefore, O best of men, save your father from hell, O lord.
अयोध्यां गच्छ भरत प्रकृतीरनुरञ्जय । शत्रुघ्नसहितो वीर सह सर्वैर्द्विजातिभि: ।। २.१०७.
Go to Ayodhya, Bharata, win the favor of the people, together with Shatrughna, O hero, and with all the twice-born as well.
प्रवेक्ष्ये दण्डकारण्यमहमप्यविलम्बयन् । आभ्यां तु सहितो राजन् वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणेन च ।। २.१०७.
I too shall enter the Dandaka forest without delay, accompanied by these two—Vaidehi and Lakshmana, O king.
त्वं राजा भरत भव स्वयं नराणां वन्यानामहमपि राजराण्मृगाणाम् । गच्छत्वं पुरवरमद्य सम्प्रहृष्ट: संहृष्टस्त्वहमपि दण्डकान् प्रवेक्ष्ये ।। २.१०७.
You, Bharata, become king yourself over men; I shall be king of the forest-dwellers and the wild beasts. Go today, rejoicing, to the great city; I too, rejoicing, shall enter Dandaka.
छायां ते दिनकरभा: प्रबाधमानं वर्षत्रं भरत करोतु मूर्ध्नि शीताम् । एतेषामहमपि काननद्रुमाणां छायां तामति शयिनीं सुखी श्रयिष्ये ।। २.१०७.
May the rays of the sun, O Bharata, make your head cool with shade during the rainy season; I too shall happily rest in the deep shade of these forest trees.
