अजायत समं तेन तस्य तस्य पृथक् पृथक् । गोलाङ्गूलीषु चोत्पन्नाः किंचिदुन्नतविक्रमाः ॥१-१७-
Each was born exactly resembling that deity, each one separately; among the Golangulas, some were born with slightly superior prowess.
ऋक्षीषु च तथा जाता वानराः किन्नरीषु च । देवा महर्षिगन्धर्वास्तार्क्ष्ययक्षा यशस्विनः ॥१-१७-
Similarly, monkeys were born among the Riksha and Kinnari women; the gods, great sages, Gandharvas, Garuda, and renowned Yakshas,
नागाः किम्पुरुषाश्चैव सिद्धविद्याधरोरगाः । बहवो जनयामासुर्हृष्टास्तत्र सहस्रशः ॥१-१७-
Nagas, Kimpurushas, Siddhas, Vidyadharas, and Uragas—many, delighted, begot thousands there.
चारणाश्च सुतान् वीरान् ससृजुर्वनचारिणः । वानरान् सुमहाकायान् सर्वान् वै वनचारिणः ॥१-१७-
The celestial singers also produced heroic sons who roamed the forests—monkeys of immense size, all of them dwellers of the woods.
अप्सरस्सु च मुख्यासु तथा विद्याधरीषु च । नागकन्यासु च तदा गन्धर्वीणां तनूषु च । कामरूपबलोपेता यथाकामविचारिणः ॥१-१७-
From the foremost Apsarases, Vidyādharīs, Nāga maidens, and Gandharvīs, were born those endowed with the power to assume forms and strength at will, moving about as they pleased.
सिंहशार्दूलसदृशा दर्पेण च बलेन च । शिलाप्रहरणाः सर्वे सर्वे पादपयोधिनः ॥१-१७-
All were like lions and tigers in pride and strength, wielding rocks as weapons, and all were at home among the trees and mountains.
नखदंष्ट्रायुधाः सर्वे सर्वे सर्वास्त्रकोविदाः । विचालयेयुः शैलेन्द्रान् भेदयेयुः स्थिरान् द्रुमान् ॥१-१७-
All bore claws and fangs as weapons, all were skilled in every weapon, able to shake the king of mountains and shatter even the sturdiest trees.
क्षोभयेयुश्च वेगेन समुद्रं सरितां पतिम् । दारयेयुः क्षितिं पद्भ्यामाप्लवेयुर्महार्णवान् ॥१-१७-
With their speed, they could agitate the ocean, lord of rivers, rend the earth with their feet, and leap across vast seas.
नभस्तलं विशेयुश्च गृह्णीयुरपि तोयदान् । गृह्णीयुरपि मातङ्गान् मत्तान् प्रव्रजतो वने ॥१-१७-
They could enter the sky, seize even the clouds, and capture wild, intoxicated elephants roaming the forest.
नर्दमानांश्च नादेन पातयेयुर्विहङ्गमान् । ईदृशानां प्रसूतानि हरीणां कामरूपिणाम् ॥१-१७-
With their roaring cries, they could bring down birds in flight; such were the forms of the monkeys born with the power to change shape at will.
शतं शतसहस्राणि यूथपानां महात्मनाम् । ते प्रधानेषु यूथेषु हरीणां हरियूथपाः ॥१-१७-
Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of mighty leaders of monkey troops were born, chiefs among the monkeys.
बभूवुर्यूथपश्रेष्ठान् वीरांश्चाजनयन् हरीन् । अन्ये ऋक्षवतः प्रस्थानुपतस्थुः सहस्रशः ॥१-१७-
They became the foremost of troop leaders and also produced heroic monkeys; others, in thousands, accompanied the bear-like ones on their journeys.
अन्ये नानाविधाञ्छैलान् काननानि च भेजिरे । सूर्यपुत्रं च सुग्रीवं शक्रपुत्रं च वालिनम् ॥१-१७-
Others took to various mountains and forests; they served Sugrīva, son of the Sun, and Vālin, son of Indra.
भ्रातरावुपतस्थुस्ते सर्वे च हरियूथपाः । नलं नीलं हनूमन्तमन्यांश्च हरियूथपान् ॥१-१७-
All the monkey chiefs gathered around those two brothers, as well as Nala, Nīla, Hanumān, and other leaders of the monkey troops.
ते तार्क्ष्यबलसम्पन्नाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः । विचरन्तोऽर्दयन् सर्वान् सिंहव्याघ्रमहोरगान् ॥१-१७-
All endowed with the strength of Garuḍa, skilled in battle, they roamed about, overpowering lions, tigers, and great serpents.
महाबलो महाबाहुर्वाली विपुलविक्रमः । जुगोप भुजवीर्येण ऋक्षगोपुच्छवानरान् ॥१-१७-
The mighty and long-armed Vālin, of vast prowess, protected the monkeys with bear-like tails by the strength of his arms.
तैरियं पृथिवी शूरैः सपर्वतवनार्णवा । कीर्णा विविधसंस्थानैर्नानाव्यञ्जनलक्षणैः ॥१-१७-
By these heroes, the earth, with its mountains, forests, and oceans, was filled—diverse in form and marked by various features.
तैर्मेघवृन्दाचलकूटसंनिभै- :::र्महाबलैर्वानरयूथपाधिपैः बभूव भूर्भीमशरीररूपैः :::समावृता रामसहायहेतोः ॥१-१७-
By these monkey troop leaders, mighty as masses of clouds or mountain peaks, the earth was covered with fearsome forms, for the sake of aiding Rāma.

When that great horse sacrifice was completed, the gods received their shares and departed as they had come.
समाप्तदीक्षानियमः पत्नीगणसमन्वितः । प्रविवेश पुरीं राजा सभृत्यबलवाहनः ॥१-१८-
Having completed his vows and rituals, accompanied by his wives, the king entered the city with his servants, army, and vehicles.
यथार्हं पूजितास्तेन राज्ञा वै पृथिवीश्वराः । मुदिताः प्रययुर्देशान् प्रणम्य मुनिपुंगवम् ॥१-१८-
Having been duly honored by the king, the lords of the earth, joyful, departed to their own lands after bowing to the eminent sage.
श्रीमतां गच्छतां तेषां स्वगृहाणि पुरात् ततः । बलानि राज्ञां शुभ्राणि प्रहृष्टानि चकाशिरे ॥१-१८-
As those illustrious kings returned to their cities, the splendid armies of the rulers, filled with delight, shone brightly.
गतेषु पृथिवीशेषु राजा दशरथः पुनः । प्रविवेश पुरीं श्रीमान् पुरस्कृत्य द्विजोत्तमान् ॥१-१८-
When the lords of the earth had departed, King Daśaratha, resplendent, entered his city, leading foremost among the twice-born.
शान्तया प्रययौ सार्धमृशष्यशृङ्गः सुपूजितः । अमुगम्यमानो राज्ञा च सानुयात्रेण धीमता ॥१-१८-
Ṛśyaśṛṅga, having been greatly honored, departed together with Śāntā, not detained by the wise king, along with his retinue.
एवं विसृज्य तान् सर्वान् राजा सम्पूर्णमानसः । उवास सुखितस्तत्र पुत्रोत्पत्तिं विचिन्तयन् ॥१-१८-
Thus, having dismissed them all, the king, his mind fulfilled, remained there happily, contemplating the birth of a son.
ततो यज्ञे समाप्ते तु ऋतूनां षट् समत्ययुः । ततश्च द्वादशे मासे चैत्रे नावमिके तिथौ ॥१-१८-
After the completion of the sacrifice, six seasons passed; then, in the twelfth month, on the ninth day of Caitra—
नक्षत्रेऽदितिदैवत्ये स्वोच्चसंस्थेषु पञ्चसु । ग्रहेषु कर्कटे लग्ने वाक्पताविन्दुना सह ॥१-१८-
When the star Punarvasu, presided over by Aditi, was ascendant, and five planets were in their exalted positions, with Jupiter and the Moon together in Cancer at the ascendant—
प्रोद्यमाने जगन्नाथं सर्वलोकनमस्कृतम् । कौसल्याजनयद् रामं दिव्यलक्षणसंयुतम् ॥१-१८-
As the all-honored Lord of the Universe was rising, Kausalyā gave birth to Rāma, endowed with divine marks.
विष्णोरर्धं महाभागं पुत्रमैक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम् । लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुं रक्तोष्ठं दुन्दुभिस्वनम् ॥१-१८-
He was half of Viṣṇu, greatly glorious, the joy of the Ikṣvāku line, with red eyes, mighty arms, red lips, and a voice like a drum.
