स समृद्धां मया सार्द्धमयोध्यां गच्छ राघव । अभिषेचय चात्मानं कुलस्यास्य भवाय न: ।। २.१०१.
Go, Rāghava, together with me to prosperous Ayodhyā, and be consecrated for the good of our lineage.
राजानं मानुषं प्राहुर्देवत्वे स मतो मम । यस्य धर्मार्थसहितं वृत्तमाहुरमानुषम् ।। २.१०१.
They call a king a mortal man, but to me he is divine, whose conduct is guided by righteousness and wealth, though he is human.
केकयस्थे च मयि तु त्वयि चारण्यमाश्रिते । दिवमार्यो गतो राजा यायजूक: सतां मत: ।। २.१०१.
While I remained in Kekaya and you had gone to the forest, our noble father, esteemed among the virtuous, ascended to heaven.
निष्क्रान्तमात्रे भवति सहसीते सलक्ष्मणे । दु:खशोकाभिभूतस्तु राजा त्रिदिवमभ्यगात् ।। २.१०१.
As soon as you and Lakṣmaṇa departed, the king, overwhelmed by grief and sorrow, reached the heavenly world.
उत्तिष्ठ पुरुषव्याघ्र क्रियतामुदकं पितु: । ऺअहं चायं च शत्रुघ्न: पूर्वमेव कृतोदकौ ।। २.१०१.
Rise up, O tiger among men, and perform the water-rite for our father; I and Śatrughna have already offered water before.
प्रियेण खलु दत्तं हि पितृलोकेषु राघव । अक्षय्यं भवतीत्याहुर्भवांश्चैव पितु: प्रिय: ।। २.१०१.
Indeed, it is said that water offered with love to the ancestors becomes imperishable in their world; and you, Rāghava, are dear to our father.
त्वामेव शोचंस्तव दर्शनेप्सुस्त्वय्येव सक्तामनिवर्त्य बुद्धिम् । त्वया विहीनस्तव शोकरुग्णस्त्वां संस्मरन्नस्तमित: पिता ते ।। २.१०१.
He grieved only for you, longing to see you, his mind fixed on you alone; deprived of you, sick with sorrow for you, remembering you, your father passed away.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदयोध्याकाण्डे एकोत्तरशततम:सर्ग:
Thus ends the one hundred and first sarga in the glorious Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the ancient and revered Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.

Hearing that sorrowful speech from Bharata, which told of his father’s death, Rāghava lost consciousness.
तं तु वज्रमिवोत्सृष्टमाहवे दानवारिणा । वाग्वज्रं भरतेनोक्तममनोज्ञं परन्तप: ।। २.१०२.
That word of Bharata, as harsh as a thunderbolt hurled by the foe of the Dānavas in battle, struck down the mighty Rāma.
प्रगृह्य बाहू रामो वै पुष्पिताग्रो यथा द्रुम: । वने परशुना कृत्तस्तथा भुवि पपात ह ।। २.१०२.
Grasping his arms, Rāma fell to the ground like a tree with blossoming branches cut down in the forest by an axe.
तथा निपतितं रामं जगत्यां जगतीपतिम् । कूलघातपरिश्रान्तं प्रसुप्तमिव कुञ्जरम् ।। २.१०२.
Thus fallen to the earth, the lord of the world lay like a great elephant, exhausted on the riverbank, fast asleep.
भ्रातरस्ते महेष्वासं सर्वत: शोककर्शितम् । रुदन्त: सह वैदेह्या सिषिचु: सलिलेन वै ।। २.१०२.
His brothers, great archers all, worn down by grief, wept with Sītā and sprinkled him with water.
स तु संज्ञां पुनर्लब्ध्वा नेत्राभ्यामास्रमुत्सृजन् । उपाक्रामत काकुत्स्थ: कृपणं बहु भाषितुम् ।। २.१०२.
Regaining consciousness, tears streaming from his eyes, the son of Kakutstha began to speak many pitiful words.
स राम: स्वर्गतं श्रुत्वा पितरं पृथिवीपतिम् । उवाच भरतं वाक्यं धर्मात्मा धर्मसंहितम् ।। २.१०२.
When Rama heard that his father, the lord of the earth, had passed away, that righteous one spoke words in accordance with dharma to Bharata.
किं करिष्याम्ययोध्यायां ताते दिष्टां गतिं गते । कस्तां राजवराद्धीनामयोध्यां पालयिष्यति ।। २.१०२.
Now that my father has gone to the destined path, what shall I do in Ayodhya? Who will govern Ayodhya, which depended on that foremost of kings?
किं नु तस्य मया कार्य्यं दुर्जातेन महात्मन: । यो मृतो मम शोकेन मया चापि न संस्कृत: ।। २.१०२.
What duty remains for me, who am of difficult birth, toward that great-souled one who died from grief over me and whom I could not even perform the funeral rites for?
अहो भरत सिद्धार्थो येन राजा त्वया ऽनघ । शत्रुघ्नेन च सर्वेषु प्रेतकृत्येषु सत्कृत: ।। २.१०२.
Ah, Bharata, you are truly fortunate, for the king was duly honored in all the funeral rites by you, blameless one, and by Shatrughna.
निष्प्रधानामनेकाग्रां नरेन्द्रेण विना कृताम् । निवृत्तवनवासोपि नायोध्यां गन्तुमुत्सहे ।। २.१०२.
Even after completing my forest exile, I do not have the heart to return to Ayodhya, which, deprived of its sovereign, has become leaderless and distracted.
समाप्तवनवासं मामयोध्यायां परन्तप । को नु शासिष्यति पुनस्ताते लोकान्तरं गते ।। २.१०२.
O subduer of foes, even if I complete my exile, who will rule Ayodhya again now that my father has departed to the other world?
पुरा प्रेक्ष्य सुवृत्तं मां पिता यान्याह सान्त्वयन् । वाक्यानि तानि श्रोष्यामि कुत: कर्णसुखान्यहम् ।। २.१०२.
Once, when my father saw me behaving well, he would speak gentle words to comfort me—how will I ever again hear those pleasing words?
एवमुक्त्वा स भरतं भार्यामभ्येत्य राघव: । उवाच शोकसन्तप्त: पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् ।। २.१०२.
Having spoken thus to Bharata, Raghava approached his wife, whose face was like the full moon, and addressed her, tormented by grief.
सीते मृतस्ते श्वशुर: पित्रा हीनो ऽसि लक्ष्मण । भरतो दु:खमाचष्टे स्वर्गतं पृथिवीपतिम् ।। २.१०२.
Sita, your father-in-law has died; you are bereft of a father, Lakshmana. Bharata sorrowfully tells us the king has gone to heaven.
ततो बहुगुणं तेषां बाष्पं नेत्रेष्वजायत । तथा ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे कुमाराणां यशस्विनाम् ।। २.१०२.
As Kakutstha spoke in this way, abundant tears welled up in the eyes of those illustrious princes.
ततस्ते भ्रातर: सर्वे भृशमाश्वास्य राघवम् । अब्रुवन् जगतीभर्त्तु: क्रियतामुदकं पितु: ।। २.१०२.
Then all the brothers, greatly consoling Raghava, said, 'Let the water-rite be performed for our father, the lord of the earth.'
सा सीता श्वशुरं श्रुत्वा स्वर्गलोकगतं नृपम् । नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यामशकन्नेक्षितुं पतिम् ।। २.१०२.
When Sita heard that her father-in-law, the king, had gone to the heavenly realms, her eyes filled with tears and she was unable to look at her husband.
सान्त्वयित्वा तु तां रामो रुदन्तीं जनकात्मजाम् । उवाच लक्ष्मणं तत्र दु:खितो दु:खितं वच: ।। २.१०२.
Then Rama, after consoling Janaka's daughter as she wept, spoke to Lakshmana there, himself sorrowful, to his sorrowful brother.
आनयेङ्गुदिपिण्याकं चीरमाहर चोत्तरम् । जलक्रियार्थं तातस्य गमिष्यामि महात्मन: ।। २.१०२.
Bring me a cake of ingudi flour and fetch an upper garment of bark; I will go to perform the water-rite for my great-souled father.
सीता पुरस्ताद्व्रजतुत्वमेनामभितो व्रज । अहं पश्चाद्गमिष्यामि गतिर्ह्येषा सुदारुणा ।। २.१०२.
Let Sita go ahead, and you walk beside her; I will follow behind, for this path is exceedingly harsh.
ततो नित्यानुगस्तेषां विदितात्मा महामति: । मृदुर्दान्तश्च शान्तश्च रामे च दृढभक्तिमान् ।। २.१०२.
Then Sumitra's son, ever devoted to them, self-controlled, gentle, peaceful, and firm in his devotion to Rama, who understood himself and was of great wisdom—
