कच्चिन्नागवनं गुप्तं कच्चित्ते सन्ति धेनुका: । कच्चिन्न गणिकाश्वानां कुञ्जराणां च तृप्यसि ।। २.१००.
Is the elephant forest well guarded, and do you have plenty of cows? Are you satisfied with the horses and elephants belonging to the royal stables?
कच्चिद्दर्शयसे नित्यं मनुष्याणां विभूषितम् । उत्थायोत्थाय पूर्वाह्णे राजपुत्र महापथे ।। २.१००.
Do you regularly show yourself, adorned, to the people, rising early each morning, O prince, on the great highway?
कच्चिन्न सर्वे कर्मान्ता: प्रत्यक्षास्ते ऽविशङ्कया । सर्वे वा पुनरुत्सृष्टा मध्यमेवात्र कारणम् ।। २.१००.
Are all your officials' tasks openly performed without suspicion, or are they all left unfinished, with only partial reasons given?
कच्चित् सर्वाणि दुर्गाणि धनधान्यायुधोदकै: । यन्त्रैश्च परिपूर्णानि तथा शिल्पिधनुर्द्धरै ।। २.१००.
Are all your fortresses fully supplied with wealth, grain, weapons, water, machines, and craftsmen skilled in archery?
आयस्ते विपुल: कच्चित् कच्चिदल्पतरो व्यय: । अपात्रेषु न ते कच्चित्कोशो गच्छति राघव ।। २.१००.
Is your income abundant, and your expenditure modest? Does your treasury, O Raghava, never go to unworthy recipients?
देवतार्थे च पित्रर्थे ब्राह्मणाभ्यागतेषु च । योधेषु मित्रवर्गेषु कच्चिद्गच्छति ते व्यय: ।। २.१००.
Is your expenditure directed towards the gods, ancestors, Brahmins who visit, warriors, and friends?
कच्चिदार्य्यो विशुद्धात्मा ऽ ऽक्षारितश्चोरकर्मणा । अपृष्ट: शास्त्रकुशलैर्न लोभाद्वध्यते शुचि: ।। २.१००.
Is the noble person, pure in heart, never accused of theft, nor condemned by scholars without inquiry, nor punished out of greed, remaining innocent?
गृहीतश्चैव पृष्टश्च काले दृष्ट: सकारण: । कच्चिन्न मुच्यते चोरो धनलोभान्नरर्षभ ।। २.१००.
Is the thief, apprehended and questioned at the proper time, seen with evidence, never released out of greed for wealth, O bull among men?
व्यसने कच्चिदाढ्यस्य दुर्गतस्य च राघव । अर्थं विरागा: पश्यन्ति तवामात्या बहुश्रुता: ।। २.१००.
O Rāghava, in times of adversity or prosperity, do your well-learned ministers, impartial in judgment, look after your interests?
यानि मिथ्याभिशस्तानां पतन्त्यस्राणि राघव । तानि पुत्रपशून् घ्नन्ति प्रीत्यर्थमनुशासत: ।। २.१००.
The tears shed by those falsely accused, O Rāghava, destroy the sons and cattle of those who punish them out of desire for favor.
कच्चिद् वृद्धांश्च बालांश्च वैद्यमुख्यांश्च राघव । दानेन मनसा वाचा त्रिभिरेतैर्बुभूषसे ।। २.१००.
Do you seek to support the aged, the young, and the foremost physicians, O Rāghava, by means of gifts, thought, and speech—by all three?
कच्चिद्गुरूंश्च वृद्धांश्च तापसान् देवतातिथीन् । चैत्यांश्च सर्वान् सिद्धार्थान् ब्राह्मणांश्च नमस्यसि ।। २.१००.
Do you show respect to teachers, elders, ascetics, deities, guests, all sacred shrines, the accomplished, and the Brāhmaṇas?
कच्चिदर्थेन वा धर्ममर्थं धर्मेण वा पुन: । उभौ वा प्रीतिलोभेन कामेन च न बाधसे ।। २.१००.
Do you, by means of wealth, support righteousness, and by righteousness, wealth; and do you not harm either, or both, out of desire for pleasure or out of greed?
कच्चिदर्थं च धर्मं च कामं च जयतां वर । विभज्य काले कालज्ञ सर्वान् वरद सेवसे ।। २.१००.
O best among the victorious, do you, knowing the right time, serve all—wealth, righteousness, and pleasure—by dividing them according to time?
कच्चित्ते ब्राह्मणा: शर्म सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदा: । आशंसन्ते महाप्राज्ञ पौरजानपदै: सह ।। २.१००.
Do the Brāhmaṇas, skilled in the meaning of all the scriptures, wish you well, O greatly wise one, together with the citizens and country people?
नास्तिक्यमनृतं क्रोधं प्रमादं दीर्घसूत्रताम् । अदर्शनं ज्ञानवतामालस्यं पञ्चवृत्तिताम् ।। २.१००.
Do you avoid atheism, falsehood, anger, carelessness, procrastination, disregard for the wise, laziness, and fickleness of mind?
एकचिन्तनमर्थानामनर्थज्ञैश्च मन्त्रणम् । निश्चितानामनारम्भं मन्त्रस्यापरिरक्षणम् ।। २.१००.
Do you avoid considering matters alone, consulting with those ignorant of misfortune, failing to act on decisions, and not protecting counsel?
मङ्गलस्याप्रयोगं च प्रत्युत्थानं च सर्वत: । कच्चित्त्वं वर्जयस्येतान् राजदोषांश्चतुर्दश ।। २.१००.
Do you avoid the fourteen royal faults: neglecting auspicious acts, failing to rise to occasions, and the rest?
दश पञ्च चतुर्वर्गान् सप्तवर्गं च तत्त्वत: । अष्टवर्गं त्रिवर्गं च विद्यास्तिस्रश्च राघव ।। २.१००.
O Rāghava, do you truly understand the ten, five, four, seven, eight, and three groups, as well as the three branches of knowledge?
इन्द्रियाणां जयं बुद्ध्वा षाङ्गुण्यं दैवमानुषम् । कृत्यं विंशतिवर्गञ्च तथा प्रकृतिमण्डलम् ।। २.१००.
Having mastered the senses, do you know the sixfold policy, the divine and human factors, the twenty types of duties, and the circle of subjects?
यात्रादण्डविधानञ्च द्वियोनी सन्धिविग्रहौ । कच्चिदेतान् महाप्राज्ञ यथावदनुमन्यसे ।। २.१००.
Do you, O greatly wise one, properly approve of military expeditions, punishment, the two kinds of birth, alliances and hostilities?
मन्त्रिभिस्त्वं यथोद्दिष्टैश्चतुर्भिस्त्रिभिरेव वा । कच्चित् समस्तैर्व्यस्तैश्च मन्त्र मन्त्रयसे मिथ: ।। २.१००.
Do you consult on counsel with ministers, as prescribed, either with four or three, or with all together or separately?
कच्चित्ते सफला वेदा: कच्चित्ते सफला: क्रिया: । कच्चित्ते सफला दारा: कच्चित्ते सफलं श्रुतम् ।। २.१००.
Are your studies of the Vedas fruitful? Are your rituals fruitful? Are your marriages fruitful? Is your learning fruitful?
कच्चिदेषैव ते बुद्धिर्यथोक्ता मम राघव । आयुष्या च यशस्या च धर्मकामार्थसंहिता ।। २.१००.
Is your understanding, O Rāghava, as I have described—conducive to long life, fame, and the pursuit of righteousness, desire, and wealth?
यां वृत्तिं वर्त्तते तातो यां च न: प्रपितामहा: । तां वृत्तिं वर्त्तसे कच्चिद्या च सत्पथगा शुभा ।। २.१००.
Do you follow the conduct that your father and our ancestors observed, and which leads to the good and righteous path?
कच्चित् स्वादु कृतं भोज्यमेको नाश्नासि राघव । कच्चिदाशंसमानेभ्यो मित्रेभ्य: सम्प्रयच्छसि ।। २.१००.
Do you, O Rāghava, avoid eating delicious food alone, and do you share it with friends who desire it?
राजा तु धर्मेण हि पालयित्वा महामतिर्दण्डधर: प्रजानाम् । अवाप्य कृत्स्नां वसुधां यथावदितश्च्युत: स्वर्गमुपैति विद्वान् ।। २.१००.
But the wise king, having governed his people with justice and upheld the law, having rightfully attained the entire earth, departs to heaven when his time comes.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदयोध्याकाण्डे शततम: सर्ग:
Thus ends the hundredth sarga in the glorious Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the ancient and revered Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.

Hearing Rāma’s words, Bharata replied: ‘What use is kingship to me, deprived as I am of righteousness?’
शाश्वतो ऽयं सदा धर्म्म: स्थितो ऽस्मासु नरर्षभ । ज्येष्ठपुत्रे स्थिते राजन्न कनीयान् नृपो भवेत् ।। २.१०१.
This is the eternal law among us, O best of men: when the eldest son is present, the younger cannot become king.
