कच्चिद्धृष्टश्च शूरश्च मतिमान् धृतिमाञ्छुचि: । कुलीनश्चानुरक्तश्च दक्ष: सेनापति: कृत: ।। २.१००.
Have you appointed as commander of your army one who is bold, brave, intelligent, steadfast, pure, of noble lineage, loyal, and capable?
बलवन्तश्च कच्चित्ते मुख्या युद्धविशारदा: । दृष्टापदाना विक्रान्तास्त्वया सत्कृत्य मानिता: ।। २.१००.
Are your principal warriors strong, skilled in battle, proven in danger, and have you honored and respected them properly?
कच्चिद्बलस्य भक्तं च वेतनं च यथोचितम् । सम्प्राप्तकालं दातव्यं ददासि न विलम्बसे ।। २.१००.
Do you give food and wages to your troops at the proper time, without delay, as is fitting?
कालातिक्रमणाच्चैव भक्तवेतनयोर्भृता: । भर्त्तु: कुप्यन्ति दुष्यन्ति सो ऽनर्थ: सुमहान् स्मृत: ।। २.१००.
For if there is delay in giving food and wages, the soldiers become angry and corrupted, and that is considered a great misfortune for the ruler.
कच्चित् सर्वे ऽनुरक्तास्त्वां कुलपुत्रा: प्रधानत: । कच्चित्प्राणांस्तवार्थेषु सन्त्यजन्ति समाहिता: ।। २.१००.
Are all the sons of noble families, especially the chief ones, devoted to you? Are they ready to give their lives for your cause, with full commitment?
कच्चिज्जानपदो विद्वान् दक्षिण: प्रतिभानवान् । यथोक्तवादी दूतस्ते कृतो भरत पण्डित: ।। २.१००.
Have you appointed as your messenger a learned, skilled, intelligent, and eloquent man from the countryside, who speaks as instructed, O wise Bharata?
कच्चिदष्टादशान्येषु स्वपक्षे दश पञ्च च । त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरविज्ञातैर्वेत्सि तीर्थानि चारकै: ।। २.१००.
Do you know the eighteen positions—ten on your own side and five on the enemy's—by means of three spies each, unknown to one another?
कच्चिद्व्यपास्तानहितान् प्रतियातांश्च सर्वदा । दुर्बलाननवज्ञाय वर्त्तसे रिपुसूदन ।। २.१००.
Do you always avoid those who are not well-disposed and keep away those who have turned against you, never underestimating the weak, O destroyer of foes?
कच्चिन्न लोकायतिकान् ब्राह्मणांस्तात सेवसे । अनर्थकुशला ह्येते बाला: पण्डितमानिन: ।। २.१००.
My son, do you avoid associating with materialistic Brahmins? For these childish men, though thinking themselves wise, are skilled only in useless matters.
धर्मशास्त्रेषु मुख्येषु विद्यमानेषु दुर्बुधा: । बुद्धिमान्वीक्षिकीं प्राप्य निरर्थं प्रवदन्ति ते ।। २.१००.
When the main scriptures of dharma are available, these foolish men, having acquired a little logic, speak uselessly, though they consider themselves wise.
वीरैरध्युषितां पूर्वमस्माकं तात पूर्वकै: । सत्यनामां दृढद्वारां हस्त्यश्वरथसङ्कुलाम् ।। २.१००.
O father, is the city, once inhabited by our heroic ancestors, named Truth, with strong gates, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, still flourishing?
ब्राह्मणै: क्षत्ऺित्रयैर्वैश्यै: स्वकर्मनिरतै: सदा । जितेन्द्रियैर्महोत्साहैर्वृतामार्यै: सहस्रश: ।। २.१००.
Is it always filled with Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, devoted to their own duties, self-controlled, of great enthusiasm, and surrounded by noble people in thousands?
प्रासादैर्विविधाकारैर्वृतां वैद्यजनाकुलाम् । कच्चित्सुमुदितां स्फीतामयोध्यां परिरक्षसि ।। २.१००.
Is the city, adorned with mansions of various shapes and crowded with skilled physicians, Ayodhya, prosperous and joyful, well protected by you?
कच्चिच्चित्यशतैर्जुष्ट: सुनिविष्टजनाकुल: । देवस्थानै: प्रपाभिश्च तटाकैश्चोपशोभित: ।। २.१००.
Is it graced with hundreds of buildings, densely populated, beautified by temples, rest houses, and ponds?
प्रहृष्टनरनारीक: समाजोत्सवशोभित: । सुकृष्टसीमा पशुमान् हिंसाभि: परिवर्जित: ।। २.१००.
Is it radiant with cheerful men and women, shining with gatherings and festivals, with well-cultivated borders, abundant in cattle, and free from violence?
अदेवमातृको रम्य: श्वापदै: परिवर्जित: । परित्यक्तो भयै: सर्वै: खनिभिश्चोपशोभित: ।। २.१००.
Is it delightful, free from irreligious people and wild beasts, abandoned by all fears, and adorned with mines?
विवर्जितो नरै: पापैर्मम पूर्वै: सुरक्षित: । कच्चिज्जनपद: स्फीत: सुखं वसति राघव ।। २.१००.
Is the region, protected by my ancestors and devoid of wicked people, prosperous, and do its inhabitants live happily, O Raghava?
कच्चित्ते दयिता: सर्वे कृषिगोरक्षजीविन: । वार्त्तायां संश्रितस्तात लोको हि सुखमेधते ।। २.१००.
Are all those dear to you, who live by farming and cattle-rearing, well cared for? For indeed, happiness thrives in the world through agriculture.
तेषां गुप्तिपरीहारै: कच्चित्ते भरणं कृतम् । रक्ष्या हि राज्ञा धर्मेण सर्वे विषयवासिन: ।। २.१००.
Have you provided for their protection and welfare, without neglect? All residents of the realm must be safeguarded by the king through righteousness.
कच्चित् स्त्रिय: सान्त्वयसि कच्चित्ताश्च सुरक्षिता: । कच्चिन्न श्रद्दधास्यासां कच्चिद् गुह्यं न भाषसे ।। २.१००.
Do you comfort the women, and are they well protected? Do you trust them, and do you avoid speaking of their secrets?
कच्चिन्नागवनं गुप्तं कच्चित्ते सन्ति धेनुका: । कच्चिन्न गणिकाश्वानां कुञ्जराणां च तृप्यसि ।। २.१००.
Is the elephant forest well guarded, and do you have plenty of cows? Are you satisfied with the horses and elephants belonging to the royal stables?
कच्चिद्दर्शयसे नित्यं मनुष्याणां विभूषितम् । उत्थायोत्थाय पूर्वाह्णे राजपुत्र महापथे ।। २.१००.
Do you regularly show yourself, adorned, to the people, rising early each morning, O prince, on the great highway?
कच्चिन्न सर्वे कर्मान्ता: प्रत्यक्षास्ते ऽविशङ्कया । सर्वे वा पुनरुत्सृष्टा मध्यमेवात्र कारणम् ।। २.१००.
Are all your officials' tasks openly performed without suspicion, or are they all left unfinished, with only partial reasons given?
कच्चित् सर्वाणि दुर्गाणि धनधान्यायुधोदकै: । यन्त्रैश्च परिपूर्णानि तथा शिल्पिधनुर्द्धरै ।। २.१००.
Are all your fortresses fully supplied with wealth, grain, weapons, water, machines, and craftsmen skilled in archery?
आयस्ते विपुल: कच्चित् कच्चिदल्पतरो व्यय: । अपात्रेषु न ते कच्चित्कोशो गच्छति राघव ।। २.१००.
Is your income abundant, and your expenditure modest? Does your treasury, O Raghava, never go to unworthy recipients?
देवतार्थे च पित्रर्थे ब्राह्मणाभ्यागतेषु च । योधेषु मित्रवर्गेषु कच्चिद्गच्छति ते व्यय: ।। २.१००.
Is your expenditure directed towards the gods, ancestors, Brahmins who visit, warriors, and friends?
कच्चिदार्य्यो विशुद्धात्मा ऽ ऽक्षारितश्चोरकर्मणा । अपृष्ट: शास्त्रकुशलैर्न लोभाद्वध्यते शुचि: ।। २.१००.
Is the noble person, pure in heart, never accused of theft, nor condemned by scholars without inquiry, nor punished out of greed, remaining innocent?
गृहीतश्चैव पृष्टश्च काले दृष्ट: सकारण: । कच्चिन्न मुच्यते चोरो धनलोभान्नरर्षभ ।। २.१००.
Is the thief, apprehended and questioned at the proper time, seen with evidence, never released out of greed for wealth, O bull among men?
व्यसने कच्चिदाढ्यस्य दुर्गतस्य च राघव । अर्थं विरागा: पश्यन्ति तवामात्या बहुश्रुता: ।। २.१००.
O Rāghava, in times of adversity or prosperity, do your well-learned ministers, impartial in judgment, look after your interests?
यानि मिथ्याभिशस्तानां पतन्त्यस्राणि राघव । तानि पुत्रपशून् घ्नन्ति प्रीत्यर्थमनुशासत: ।। २.१००.
The tears shed by those falsely accused, O Rāghava, destroy the sons and cattle of those who punish them out of desire for favor.
