नियुक्त: स्त्रीनियुक्तेन पित्रा यो ऽसौ महायशा: । वनवासी भवेतीह समा: किल चतुर्दश ।। २.९०.
He, of great fame, was ordered by his father, who was influenced by a woman, to live in the forest here for fourteen years.
कच्चिन्न तस्यापापस्य पापं कर्तुमिहेच्छसि । अकण्टकं भोक्तुमना राज्यं तस्यानुजस्य च ।। २.९०.
Surely you do not wish to commit wrong against that innocent one, desiring to enjoy the kingdom without obstacles, along with his younger brother?
एवमुक्तो भरद्वाजं भरत: प्रत्युवाच ह । पर्य्यश्रुनयनो दु:खाद्वाचा संसज्जमानया ।। २.९०.
Thus addressed, Bharata replied to Bharadvāja, his eyes filled with tears from sorrow, his voice choked with emotion.
हतो ऽस्मि यदि मामेवं भगवानपि मन्यते । मत्तो न दोषमाशङ्के नैवं मामनुशाधि हि ।। २.९०.
I am ruined if even the revered one thinks of me in this way; do not suspect any fault in me, nor admonish me so.
न चैतदिष्टं माता मे यदवोचन्मदन्तरे । नाहमेतेन तुष्टश्च न तद्वचनमाददे ।। २.९०.
My mother did not wish for what was spoken in my absence; I am not pleased by it, nor do I accept those words.
अहं तु तं नरव्याघ्रमुपयात: प्रसादक: । प्रतिनेतुमयोध्यां च पादौ तस्याभिवन्दितुम् ।। २.९०.
I have come to that tiger among men, seeking his favor, to bring him back to Ayodhya and to bow at his feet.
त्वं मामेवङ्गतं मत्वा प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि । शंस मे भगवन् राम: क्व सम्प्रति महीपति: ।। २.९०.
You should show me kindness, considering my situation; tell me, revered one, where is Rama, the lord of the earth, at present?
वसिष्ठादिभिर्ऋत्विग्भिर्याचितो भगवांस्तत: । उवाच तं भरद्वाज: प्रसादाद्भरतं वच: ।। २.९०.
Then, urged by Vasiṣṭha and other priests, the revered sage Bharadvāja spoke to Bharata, kindly granting him words.
त्वय्येतत्पुरुषव्याघ्र युक्तं राघववंशजे । गुरुवृत्तिर्दमश्चैव साधूनां चानुयायिता ।। २.९०.
This conduct befits you, O tiger among men, descendant of Raghu: reverence for elders, self-restraint, and following the virtuous.
जाने चैतन्मन:स्थं ते दृढीकरणमस्त्विति । अपृच्छं त्वां तथात्यर्थं कीर्त्तिं समभिवर्द्धयन् ।। २.९०.
I know this is firmly established in your mind; I questioned you so extensively to further enhance your renown.
जाने च रामं धर्म्मज्ञं ससीतं सहलक्ष्मणम् । असौ वसति ते भ्राता चित्रकूटे महागिरौ ।। २.९०.
I know that Rama, knower of righteousness, is with Sita and Lakṣmaṇa; your brother dwells on the great mountain Citrakūṭa.
श्वस्तु गन्तासि तं देशं वसाद्य सह मन्त्रिभि: । एतं मे कुरु सुप्राज्ञ कामं कामार्थकोविद ।। २.९०.
Tomorrow you will go to that place, after resting here with your counselors; fulfill this wish of mine, O wise one, skilled in fulfilling desires.
ततस्तथेत्येवमुदारदर्शन: प्रतीतरूपो भरतो ऽब्रवीद्वच: । चकार बुद्धिं च तदा तदाश्रमे निशानिवासाय नराधिपात्मज: ।। २.९०.
Then Bharata, noble in appearance and reassured, replied, 'So be it,' and resolved to spend the night in that hermitage.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये श्रीमदयोध्याकाण्डे नवतितम: सर्ग:
Thus ends the ninetieth chapter of the glorious Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa in the sacred Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, the first epic.

Then the sage, having decided to stay there, invited Bharata, son of Kaikeyī, as a guest.
अब्रवीद्भरतस्त्वेनं नन्विदं भवता कृतम् । पाद्यमर्घ्यं तथातिथ्यं वने यदुपपद्यते ।। २.९१.
Bharata said to him, 'Surely, you have already performed all that is proper—foot-washing, offerings, and hospitality—as is fitting in the forest.'
अथोवाच भरद्वाजो भरतं प्रहसन्निव । जाने त्वां प्रीतिसंयुक्तं तुष्येस्त्वं येन केनचित् ।। २.९१.
Then Bharadvāja, smiling, spoke to Bharata, 'I know you are filled with affection; you are pleased by any gesture.'
सेनायास्तु तवैतस्या: कर्तुमिच्छामि भोजनम् । मम प्रीतिर्यथारूपा त्वमर्हो मनुजाधिप ।। २.९१.
I wish to provide food for your army; my affection is as it should be, and you are worthy, O lord of men.
किमर्थं चापि निक्षिप्य दूरे बलमिहागत: । कस्मान्नेहोपयातोसि सबल: पुरुषर्षभ ।। २.९१.
But why have you left your forces at a distance and come here? Why have you not approached with your army, O best of men?
भरत: प्रत्युवाचेदं प्राञ्जलिस्तं तपोधनम् । ससैन्यो नोपयातो ऽस्मि भगवन् भगवद्भयात् ।। २.९१.
Bharata, with joined palms, replied to the ascetic, 'I have not come here with my army, revered one, out of fear of you.'
राज्ञा च भगवन् नित्यं राजपुत्रेण वा सदा । यत्नत: परिहर्त्तव्या विषयेषु तपस्विन: ।। २.९१.
O venerable one, by the king or always by the prince, ascetics must be carefully protected from harm within the realm.
वाजिमुख्या मनुष्याश्च मत्ताश्च वरवारणा: । प्रच्छाद्य भगवन् भूमिं महतीमनुयान्ति माम् ।। २.९१.
Foremost horses, men, and intoxicated noble elephants, O revered one, follow me, covering the vast earth.
ते वृक्षानुदकं भूमिमाश्रमेषूटजांस्तथा । न हिंस्युरिति तेनाहमेक एव समागत: ।। २.९१.
They must not harm the trees, water, land, huts, or anything in the hermitages; thus I have come here alone.
आनीयतामित: सेनेत्याज्ञप्त: परमर्षिणा । ततस्तु चक्रे भरत: सेनाया: समुपागमम् ।। २.९१.
Bring the army here—so commanded by the eminent sage, Bharata then arranged for the army's arrival.
अग्निशालां प्रविश्याथ पीत्वाप: परिमृज्य च । आतिथ्यस्य क्रियाहेतोर्विश्वकर्माणमाह्वयत् ।। २.९१.
Then, entering the fire-hall, drinking water, and cleansing himself, for the sake of hospitality, he summoned Viśvakarman.
आह्वये विश्वकर्माणमहं त्वष्टारमेव च । आतिथ्यं कर्तुमिच्छामि तत्र मे संविधीयताम् ।। २.९१.
I summon Viśvakarman and also Tvaṣṭṛ; I wish to perform hospitality—let this be arranged for me there.
आह्वये लोकपालांस्त्रीन् देवान् शक्रमुखांस्तथा । आतिथ्यं कर्तुमिच्छामि तत्र मे संविधीयताम् ।। २.९१.
I summon the three guardians of the worlds, the gods led by Śakra; I wish to perform hospitality—let this be arranged for me there.
प्राक्स्रोतसश्च या नद्य: प्रत्यक्स्रोतस एव च । पृथिव्यामन्तरिक्षे च समायान्त्वद्य सर्वश: ।। २.९१.
Let all the rivers, those flowing eastward and those flowing westward, on earth and in the sky, come here today in every way.
अन्या: स्रवन्तु मैरेयं सुरामन्या: सुनिष्ठिताम् । अपराश्चोदकं शीतमिक्षुकाण्डरसोपमम् ।। २.९१.
Let some flow with mead, others with well-prepared wine, and others with cold water resembling sugarcane juice.
आह्वये देवगन्धर्वान् विश्वावसुहहाहुहून् । तथैवाप्सरसो देवीर्गन्धर्व्वीश्चापि सर्वश: ।। २.९१.
I summon the divine Gandharvas—Viśvāvasu, Haha, and Hūhū—and likewise all the divine Apsarases and Gandharvīs.
