कच्चित्सुखं नदीतीरे ऽवात्सी: काकुत्स्थ शर्वरीम् । कच्चित्ते सहसैन्यस्य तावत्सर्वमनामयम् ।। २.८९.
Kākutstha, did you spend the night comfortably on the riverbank? Is everything well with you and your entire army?
गुहस्य तत्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा स्नेहादुदीरितम् । रामस्यानुवशो वाक्यं भरतो ऽपीदमब्रवीत् ।। २.८९.
Hearing Guha's words, spoken affectionately, Bharata, obedient to Rāma, replied as follows.
सुखा न: शर्वरी राजन् पूजिताश्चापि ते वयम् । गङ्गां तु नौभिर्बह्वीभिर्दाशा: सन्तारयन्तु न: ।। २.८९.
O king, our night was comfortable, and we were honored by you. Now let your boatmen ferry us across the Ganges with many boats.
ततो गुह: संत्वरितं श्रुत्वा भरतशासनम् । प्रतिप्रविश्य नगरं तं ज्ञातिजनमब्रवीत् ।। २.८९.
Then Guha, hearing Bharata's command, hurried back into the city and spoke to his kinsmen.
उत्तिष्ठत प्रबुध्यध्वं भद्रमस्तु च व: सदा । नाव: समनुकर्षध्वं तारयिष्याम वाहिनीम् ।। २.८९.
Rise up, awaken, may you always be blessed! Bring the boats together; we will ferry the army across.
ते तथोक्ता: समुत्थाय त्वरिता राजशासनात् । पञ्च नावां शतान्याशु समानिन्यु: समन्तत: ।। २.८९.
Thus commanded, they quickly arose and, at the king's order, gathered five hundred boats from all sides.
अन्या: स्वस्तिकविज्ञेया महाघण्टाधरा वरा: । शोभमाना: पताकाभिर्युक्तवाता: सुसंहता: ।। २.८९.
Some were distinguished by the svastika mark, adorned with great bells, splendid with flags, fitted with sails, and firmly constructed.
तत: स्वस्तिकविज्ञेयां पाण्डुकम्बलसंवृताम् । सनन्दिघोषां कल्याणीं गुहो नावमुपाहरत् । तामारुरोह भरत: शत्रुघ्नश्च महाबल: ।। २.८९.
Then Guha brought a boat marked with the svastika, covered with pale blankets, sounding with auspicious drums, and beautiful. Bharata and mighty Śatrughna boarded it.
कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च याश्चान्या राजयोषित: । पुरोहितश्च तत्पूर्वं गुरवो ब्राह्मणाश्च ये । अनन्तरं राजदारास्तथैव शकटापणा: ।। २.८९.
Kausalyā, Sumitrā, and the other royal women, the priest preceding them, the elders and the Brāhmaṇas, then the royal wives and the carts and shops followed.
आवासमादीपयतां तीर्थं चाप्यवगाहताम् । भाण्डानि चाददानानां घोषस्त्रिदिवमस्पृशत् ।। २.८९.
As they lit fires for their camps and entered the river crossing, the clamor of those carrying their goods reached the heavens.
पताकिन्यस्तु ता नाव: स्वयं दाशैरधिष्ठिता: । वहन्त्यो जनमारूढं तदा सम्पेतुराशुगा: ।। २.८९.
The boats with flags, manned by boatmen themselves, swiftly carried the embarked people across.
नारीणामभिपूर्णास्तु काश्चित् काश्चिच्च वाजिनाम् । काश्चिदत्र वहन्ति स्म यानयुग्यं महाधनम् ।। २.८९.
Some boats were filled with women, others with horses, and some carried great wealth harnessed to vehicles.
ता: स्म गत्वा परं तीरमवरोप्य च तं जनम् । निवृत्ता: काण्डचित्राणि क्रियन्ते दाशबन्धुभि: ।। २.८९.
Having reached the far shore and disembarked the people, the boatmen and their kin began making various arrangements with bamboo poles.
सवैजयन्तास्तु गजा गजारोहप्रचोदिता: । तरन्त: स्म प्रकाशन्ते सध्वजा इव पर्वता: ।। २.८९.
The elephants, adorned with victory banners and urged on by their riders, crossed and shone like mountains with flags.
नावश्चारुरुहुश्चान्ये प्लवैस्तेरुस्तथापरे । अन्ये कुम्भघटैस्तेरुरन्ये तेरुश्च बाहुभि: ।। २.८९.
Some crossed in boats, others on rafts; some crossed using water jars, and others by swimming with their arms.
सा पुण्या ध्वजिनी गङ्गा दाशै: सन्तारिता स्वयम् । मैत्रे मुहूर्त्ते प्रययौ प्रयागवनमुत्तमम् ।। २.८९.
That virtuous army crossed the Ganga by various means, and in an auspicious hour proceeded to the excellent forest of Prayaga.
आश्वासयित्वा च चमूं महात्मा निवेशयित्वा च यथोपजोषम् । द्रष्टुं भरद्वाजमृषिप्रवर्य्यमृत्विग्वृत: सन् भरत: प्रतस्थे ।। २.८९.
After comforting the troops and settling them suitably, the great-souled Bharata, accompanied by priests, set out to see the eminent sage Bharadvaja.
स ब्राह्मणस्याश्रममभ्युपेत्य महात्मनो देवपुरोहितस्य । ददर्श रम्योटजवृक्षषण्डं महद्वनं विप्रवरस्य रम्यम् ।। २.८९.
He approached the hermitage of the great Brahmin, the priest of the gods, and saw the beautiful grove of huts and trees in the splendid forest belonging to the distinguished sage.

Thus ends the eighty-ninth chapter of the glorious Ayodhya Book in the sacred, original poem, the Ramayana of Valmiki.

Seeing Bharadvaja's hermitage from a distance, the foremost among men stationed all the troops and went forward with his ministers.
पद्भ्यामेव हि धर्मज्ञो न्यस्तशस्त्रपरिच्छद: । वसानो वाससी क्षौमे पुरोधाय पुरोधसम् ।। २.९०.
Knowing righteousness, he went on foot, having set aside his weapons and armor, wearing garments of fine cloth, with the chief priest leading.
तत: सन्दर्शने तस्य भरद्वाजस्य राघव: । मन्त्रिणस्तानवस्थाप्य जगामानुपुरोहितम् ।। २.९०.
Then, for the audience with Bharadvaja, Raghava stationed his ministers and proceeded behind the chief priest.
वसिष्ठमथ दृष्ट्वैव भरद्वाजो महातपा: । सञ्चचालासनात्तूर्णं शिष्यानर्घ्यमिति ब्रुवन् ।। २.९०.
Upon seeing Vasistha, the great ascetic Bharadvaja quickly rose from his seat, instructing his disciples to bring offerings.
वसिष्ठसाहचर्य्यादिति भाव: ।। २.९०.
This is the meaning: 'In the company of Vasistha.'
ताभ्यामर्घ्यं च पाद्यं च दत्त्वा पश्चात् फलानि च । आनुपूर्व्याच्च धर्मज्ञ: पप्रच्छ कुशलं कुले ।। २.९०.
After giving them offerings and water for washing feet, and then fruits in proper order, the righteous one inquired about the well-being of their family.
अयोध्यायां बले कोशे मित्रेष्वपि च मन्त्रिषु । जानन् दशरथं वृत्तं न राजानमुदाहरत् ।। २.९०.
Knowing the conduct of Dasharatha, he asked about the army, treasury, friends, and ministers in Ayodhya, but did not mention the king.
वसिष्ठो भरतश्चैनं पप्रच्छतुरनामयम् । शरीरे ऽग्निषु वृक्षेषु शिष्येषु मृगपक्षिषु ।। २.९०.
Vasistha and Bharata asked him about the health of his body, fires, trees, disciples, and the wild animals and birds.
तथेति तत्प्रतिज्ञाय भरद्वाजो महातपा: । भरतं प्रत्युवाचेदं राघवस्नेहबन्धनात् ।। २.९०.
Having agreed, the great ascetic Bharadvaja replied to Bharata, bound by affection for Raghava.
किमिहागमने कार्य्यं तव राज्यं प्रशासत: । एतदाचक्ष्व मे सर्वं नहि मे शुद्ध्यते मन: ।। २.९०.
What purpose brings you here, while you govern the kingdom? Tell me everything, for my mind is not at ease.
सुषुवे यममित्रघ्नं कौसल्या नन्दवर्द्धनम् । भ्रात्रा सह सभार्यो यश्चिरं प्रव्राजितो वनम् ।। २.९०.
Kausalya gave birth to the destroyer of enemies, the bringer of joy, who, with his brother and wife, has long been exiled to the forest.
