एतत् तद् इन्गुदी मूलम् इदम् एव च तत् तृणम् । यस्मिन् रामः च सीता च रात्रिम् ताम् शयिताउ उभौ ॥२-८७-
This is the root of the Ingudī tree, and this is the very grass on which Rāma and Sītā both spent that night.
नियम्य पृष्ठे तु तल अन्गुलित्रवान् । शरैः सुपूर्णाउ इषुधी परम् तपः । महद् धनुः सज्यम् उपोह्य लक्ष्मणो । निशाम् अतिष्ठत् परितो अस्य केवलम् ॥२-८७-
With his back restrained, his fingers on the bowstring, his quivers full of arrows, Lakṣmaṇa, having set his great bow, stood watchfully around him throughout the night.
ततः तु अहम् च उत्तम बाण चापधृक् । स्थितो अभवम् तत्र स यत्र लक्ष्मणः । अतन्द्रिभिर् ज्नातिभिर् आत्त कार्मुकैर् । महा इन्द्र कल्पम् परिपालयमः तदा ॥२-८७-
Then I too, bearing an excellent bow and arrows, stood there with Lakṣmaṇa, and with vigilant kinsmen armed with bows, we guarded him, like mighty Indra.

Here ends the eighty-eighth sarga in the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
तत् श्रुत्वा निपुणम् सर्वम् भरतः सह मन्त्रिभिः । इन्गुदी मूलम् आगम्य राम शय्याम् अवेक्ष्य ताम् ॥२-८८-
Having heard everything in detail, Bharata, together with his counselors, approached the root of the Ingudī tree and gazed upon Rāma’s resting place.
अब्रवीद् जननीः सर्वा इह तेन महात्मना । शर्वरी शयिता भूमाउ इदम् अस्य विमर्दितम् ॥२-८८-
He said to all the mothers, 'Here, that great-souled one spent the night on the ground; this is the mark where he lay.'
महा भाग कुलीनेन महा भागेन धीमता । जातो दशरथेन ऊर्व्याम् न रामः स्वप्तुम् अर्हति ॥२-८८-
Born to the illustrious and wise Daśaratha, Rāma, of noble lineage and great fortune, does not deserve to sleep on the earth.
अजिन उत्तर सम्स्तीर्णे वर आस्तरण सम्चये । शयित्वा पुरुष व्याघ्रः कथम् शेते मही तले ॥२-८८-
How does the tiger among men, who once slept on beds covered with the finest animal skins and luxurious bedding, now lie on the bare ground?
प्रासाद अग्र विमानेषु वलभीषु च सर्वदा । हैम राजत भौमेषु वर आस्त्ररण शालिषु ॥२-८८-
He always dwelled in the highest palaces, on golden, silver, and jeweled floors, upon the best of beds.
पुष्प सम्चय चित्रेषु चन्दन अगरु गन्धिषु । पाण्डुर अभ्र प्रकाशेषु शुक सम्घ रुतेषु च ॥२-८८-
Among heaps of flowers, fragrant with sandalwood and agaru, in chambers bright as white clouds, resounding with the cries of parrots.
प्रासादवरवर्येषु शीतवत्सु सुगन्धिषु । उषित्वा मेरुकल्पेषु कृतकाम्चनभित्तिषु ॥२-८८-
He lived in the finest, cool, and fragrant palaces, like those on Mount Meru, with walls adorned with gold.
गीत वादित्र निर्घोषैर् वर आभरण निह्स्वनैः । मृदन्ग वर शब्दैः च सततम् प्रतिबोधितः ॥२-८८-
Always awakened by the sounds of songs and instruments, the jingling of splendid ornaments, and the deep tones of the best drums.
बन्दिभिर् वन्दितः काले बहुभिः सूत मागधैः । गाथाभिर् अनुरूपाभिः स्तुतिभिः च परम्तपः ॥२-८८-
Praised at the proper time by bards and many sūtas and māgadhas, with fitting songs and hymns, that scorcher of foes.
अश्रद्धेयम् इदम् लोके न सत्यम् प्रतिभाति मा । मुह्यते खलु मे भावः स्वप्नो अयम् इति मे मतिः ॥२-८८-
This is unbelievable in the world; it does not seem true to me. My mind is bewildered—perhaps this is a dream, I think.
न नूनम् दैवतम् किम्चित् कालेन बलवत्तरम् । यत्र दाशरथी रामो भूमाउ एवम् शयीत सः ॥२-८८-
Surely, there is no deity stronger than fate, since Rāma, son of Daśaratha, must sleep thus on the ground.
विदेह राजस्य सुता सीता च प्रिय दर्शना । दयिता शयिता भूमौ स्नुषा दशरथस्य च ॥२-८८-
And Sītā, the beloved daughter of the king of Videha, dear to the eye and Daśaratha’s daughter-in-law, lies on the ground as well.
इयम् शय्या मम भ्रातुर् इदम् हि परिवर्तितम् । स्थण्डिले कठिने सर्वम् गात्रैर् विमृदितम् तृणम् ॥२-८८-
This is my brother's bed; indeed, it has been turned over. The grass on this hard ground is all pressed down by his limbs.
मन्ये साभरणा सुप्ता सीता अस्मिन् शयने तदा । तत्र तत्र हि दृश्यन्ते सक्ताः कनक बिन्दवः ॥२-८८-
I think Sītā, adorned with her ornaments, slept on this bed then, for here and there golden drops are seen clinging.
उत्तरीयम् इह आसक्तम् सुव्यक्तम् सीतया तदा । तथा ह्य् एते प्रकाशन्ते सक्ताः कौशेय तन्तवः ॥२-८८-
Here, Sītā's upper garment is caught, clearly visible; for the silken threads are seen entangled here.
मन्ये भर्तुः सुखा शय्या येन बाला तपस्विनी । सुकुमारी सती दुह्खम् न विजानाति मैथिली ॥२-८८-
I think this bed was comfortable for my brother, by which the young, ascetic, delicate Maithilī, though virtuous, did not feel hardship.
हा हन्तास्मि नृशम्सोऽहम् यत्सभार्यः कृतेमम । ईदृशीं राघवः शय्यामधिशेते ह्यानाथवत् ॥२-८८-
Alas! I am truly cruel, for because of me, Rāghava lies on such a bed with his wife, as if without support.
सार्वभौम कुले जातः सर्व लोक सुख आवहः । सर्व लोक प्रियः त्यक्त्वा राज्यम् प्रियम् अनुत्तमम् ॥२-८८-
Born in a royal lineage, bringing happiness to all people, beloved of all, he has abandoned the most cherished kingdom.
कथम् इन्दीवर श्यामो रक्त अक्षः प्रिय दर्शनः । सुख भागी च दुह्ख अर्हः शयितो भुवि राघवः ॥२-८८-
How is it that Rāghava, dark as a blue lotus, red-eyed, delightful to behold, who deserves happiness but is worthy of no suffering, lies on the ground?
धन्यः खलु महाभागो लक्ष्मणः शुभलक्षमणः । भ्रातरम् विषमे काले यो राममनुवर्तते ॥२-८८-
Truly blessed and most fortunate is Lakṣmaṇa, of auspicious marks, who follows Rāma, his brother, in this difficult time.
सिद्ध अर्था खलु वैदेही पतिम् या अनुगता वनम् । वयम् सम्शयिताः सर्वे हीनाः तेन महात्मना ॥२-८८-
Indeed, Vaidehī has attained her purpose, who followed her husband to the forest; but we are all left uncertain, deprived of that great soul.
अकर्ण धारा पृथिवी शून्या इव प्रतिभाति मा । गते दशरथे स्वर्गे रामे च अरण्यम् आश्रिते ॥२-८८-
The earth seems to me as if bereft of its streams, empty, with Daśaratha gone to heaven and Rāma dwelling in the forest.
न च प्रार्थयते कश्चिन् मनसा अपि वसुम्धराम् । वने अपि वसतः तस्य बाहु वीर्य अभिरक्षिताम् ॥२-८८-
No one even desires the earth in thought, though he dwells in the forest, for it is protected by the strength of his arms.
शून्य सम्वरणा रक्षाम् अयन्त्रित हय द्विपाम् । अपावृत पुर द्वाराम् राज धानीम् अरक्षिताम् ॥२-८८-
With its council chambers empty, its horses and elephants unrestrained, its city gates open, the royal treasury unguarded—
अप्रहृष्ट बलाम् न्यूनाम् विषमस्थाम् अनावृताम् । शत्रवो न अभिमन्यन्ते भक्ष्यान् विष कृतान् इव ॥२-८८-
With its army dispirited, diminished, in adversity, unprotected, even enemies do not covet it, as one does not desire food mixed with poison.
अद्य प्रभृति भूमौ तु शयिष्ये अहम् तृणेषु वा । फल मूल अशनो नित्यम् जटा चीराणि धारयन् ॥२-८८-
From today, I too will lie on the ground or on grass, always eating fruits and roots, wearing matted hair and bark garments.
