ध्यान निर्दर शैलेन विनिह्श्वसित धातुना । दैन्य पादप सम्घेन शोक आयास अधिशृन्गिणा ॥२-८५-
With the mountain of meditation as his cavern, with sighs as its minerals, with the multitude of dejected trees, and with the peaks of sorrow and fatigue—
प्रमोह अनन्त सत्त्वेन सम्ताप ओषधि वेणुना । आक्रान्तः दुह्ख शैलेन महता कैकयी सुतः ॥२-८५-
He was overwhelmed by the great mountain of suffering, by the endless force of bewilderment, by the bamboo of burning pain, and by the herbs of distress—the son of Kaikeyi.
विनिश्श्वसन्वै भृशदुर्मनास्ततः । प्रमूढसम्ज्ञः परमापदम् गतः । शमम् न लेभे हृदयज्वरार्दितो । नरर्षभो यूथहतो यथर्षभः ॥२-८५-
Sighing deeply, his mind greatly troubled, his awareness confused, fallen into dire misfortune, he found no peace, tormented by the fever of his heart, like a bull struck down from its herd.
गुहेन सार्धम् भरतः समागतः । महा अनुभावः सजनः समाहितः । सुदुर्मनाः तम् भरतम् तदा पुनर् । गुहः समाश्वासयद् अग्रजम् प्रति ॥२-८५-
Then Guha, of great understanding and accompanied by his people, approached Bharata, who was deeply distressed, and sought to comfort him regarding his elder brother.

Hear now the eighty-sixth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
आचचक्षे अथ सद्भावम् लक्ष्मणस्य महात्मनः । भरताय अप्रमेयाय गुहो गहन गोचरः ॥२-८६-
Then Guha, who dwells in the forest, told Bharata of the noble character of the great-souled Lakṣmaṇa, whose qualities are immeasurable.
तम् जाग्रतम् गुणैर् युक्तम् वर चाप इषु धारिणम् । भ्रातृ गुप्त्य् अर्थम् अत्यन्तम् अहम् लक्ष्मणम् अब्रवम् ॥२-८६-
I spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, who remained awake, endowed with virtues, holding his excellent bow and arrows, ever intent on protecting his brother.
इयम् तात सुखा शय्या त्वद् अर्थम् उपकल्पिता । प्रत्याश्वसिहि शेष्व अस्याम् सुखम् राघव नन्दन ॥२-८६-
Dear one, here is a comfortable bed prepared for you; be at ease and rest upon it happily, O delight of the Raghus.
उचितो अयम् जनः सर्वे दुह्खानाम् त्वम् सुख उचितः । धर्म आत्ममः तस्य गुप्त्य् अर्थम् जागरिष्यामहे वयम् ॥२-८६-
All these people are accustomed to hardship, but you are worthy of comfort; we shall keep watch for the sake of protecting this righteous one.
न हि रामात् प्रियतरो मम अस्ति भुवि कश्चन । मा उत्सुको भूर् ब्रवीम्य् एतद् अप्य् असत्यम् तव अग्रतः ॥२-८६-
There is no one on earth dearer to me than Rāma; do not be anxious—I say this truly before you.
अस्य प्रसादाद् आशम्से लोके अस्मिन् सुमहद् यशः । धर्म अवाप्तिम् च विपुलाम् अर्थ अवाप्तिम् च केवलाम् ॥२-८६-
By his favor, I hope for great fame in this world, for the attainment of righteousness, and for abundant and pure prosperity.
सो अहम् प्रिय सखम् रामम् शयानम् सह सीतया । रक्षिष्यामि धनुष् पाणिः सर्वैः स्वैर् ज्नातिभिः सह ॥२-८६-
Thus, I shall protect my dear friend Rāma as he sleeps with Sītā, bow in hand, together with all my kinsmen.
न हि मे अविदितम् किम्चिद् वने अस्मिमः चरतः सदा । चतुर् अन्गम् ह्य् अपि बलम् प्रसहेम वयम् युधि ॥२-८६-
There is nothing in this forest unknown to me as I wander here; even an army of four divisions we could overcome in battle.
एवम् अस्माभिर् उक्तेन लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना । अनुनीता वयम् सर्वे धर्मम् एव अनुपश्यता ॥२-८६-
Thus addressed by the great-souled Lakṣmaṇa, who looked only to righteousness, we were all persuaded.
कथम् दाशरथौ भूमौ शयाने सह सीतया । शक्या निद्रा मया लब्धुम् जीवितम् वा सुखानि वा ॥२-८६-
How could I possibly find sleep, or even life or happiness, while Rāma, son of Daśaratha, lies on the ground with Sītā?
यो न देव असुरैः सर्वैः शक्यः प्रसहितुम् युधि । तम् पश्य गुह सम्विष्टम् तृणेषु सह सीतया ॥२-८६-
He whom not even all the gods and demons together could overpower in battle—see, Guha, how he now rests on grass with Sītā.
महता तपसा लब्धो विविधैः च परिश्रमैः । एको दशरथस्य एष पुत्रः सदृश लक्षणः ॥२-८६-
This only son of Daśaratha, equal to him in every virtue, was obtained through great asceticism and many hardships.
अस्मिन् प्रव्राजिते राजा न चिरम् वर्तयिष्यति । विधवा मेदिनी नूनम् क्षिप्रम् एव भविष्यति ॥२-८६-
With him exiled, the king will not live long; surely the earth will soon become a widow.
विनद्य सुमहा नादम् श्रमेण उपरताः स्त्रियः । निर्घोष उपरतम् नूनम् अद्य राज निवेशनम् ॥२-८६-
The women, exhausted, have ceased their loud wailing; surely today the royal palace is silent.
कौसल्या चैव राजा च तथा एव जननी मम । न आशम्से यदि ते सर्वे जीवेयुः शर्वरीम् इमाम् ॥२-८६-
Neither Kausalyā, nor the king, nor my own mother—I do not expect that any of them will survive this night.
जीवेद् अपि हि मे माता शत्रुघ्नस्य अन्ववेक्षया । दुह्खिता या तु कौसल्या वीरसूर् विनशिष्यति ॥२-८६-
My mother may survive, watching over Śatrughna, but Kausalyā, grieving for her heroic son, will perish.
अतिक्रान्तम् अतिक्रान्तम् अनवाप्य मनो रथम् । राज्ये रामम् अनिक्षिप्य पिता मे विनशिष्यति ॥२-८६-
My father, having let slip the chariot of his mind and not installing Rāma in the kingdom, will pass away.
सिद्ध अर्थाः पितरम् वृत्तम् तस्मिन् काले ह्य् उपस्थिते । प्रेत कार्येषु सर्वेषु सम्स्करिष्यन्ति भूमिपम् ॥२-८६-
When that time comes and my father is gone, all those who have achieved their aims will perform his funeral rites.
रम्य चत्वर सम्स्थानाम् सुविभक्त महा पथाम् । हर्म्य प्रासाद सम्पन्नाम् सर्व रत्न विभूषिताम् ॥२-८६-
The city, with its beautiful squares, well-laid great roads, splendid mansions and palaces, adorned with every jewel,
गज अश्व रथ सम्बाधाम् तूर्य नाद विनादिताम् । सर्व कल्याण सम्पूर्णाम् हृष्ट पुष्ट जन आकुलाम् ॥२-८६-
Crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, resounding with the sound of instruments, filled with every blessing, teeming with joyful and prosperous people,
आराम उद्यान सम्पूर्णाम् समाज उत्सव शालिनीम् । सुखिता विचरिष्यन्ति राज धानीम् पितुर् मम ॥२-८६-
Complete with parks and gardens, rich in gatherings and festivals—my father's royal city will see people moving about happily.
अपि सत्य प्रतिज्नेन सार्धम् कुशलिना वयम् । निवृत्ते समये ह्य् अस्मिन् सुखिताः प्रविशेमहि ॥२-८६-
If, together with the truthful one, we safely return when the time is fulfilled, we too shall enter that city in happiness.
परिदेवयमानस्य तस्य एवम् सुमहात्मनः । तिष्ठतो राज पुत्रस्य शर्वरी सा अत्यवर्तत ॥२-८६-
While that great-souled prince stood there lamenting in this way, the night passed.
प्रभाते विमले सूर्ये कारयित्वा जटा उभौ । अस्मिन् भागीरथी तीरे सुखम् सम्तारितौ मया ॥२-८६-
At dawn, when the sun had risen clear, I arranged for both of them to have their hair matted here on the bank of the Bhāgīrathī, and I saw them off in comfort.
जटा धरौ तौ द्रुम चीर वाससौ । महा बलौ कुन्जर यूथप उपमौ । वर इषु चाप असि धरौ परम् तपौ । व्यवेक्षमाणौ सह सीतया गतौ ॥२-८६-
Those two, wearing matted locks and bark garments, mighty as leaders of elephant herds, bearing excellent bows, arrows, and swords, supreme in asceticism, departed with Sītā, glancing back.
