आशम्से स्वाशिता सेना वत्स्यति इमाम् विभावरीम् । अर्चितः विविधैः कामैः श्वः ससैन्यो गमिष्यसि ॥२-८४-
I hope your army, having eaten, will spend this night here; honored with various desires fulfilled, tomorrow you will depart with your troops.

The eighty-fifth sarga is recited in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
एवम् उक्तः तु भरतः निषाद अधिपतिम् गुहम् । प्रत्युवाच महा प्राज्ञो वाक्यम् हेतु अर्थ सम्हितम् ॥२-८५-
Thus addressed, Bharata, wise and discerning, replied to Guha, the lord of the Niṣādas, with words joined to reason and purpose.
ऊर्जितः खलु ते कामः कृतः मम गुरोह् सखे । यो मे त्वम् ईदृशीम् सेनाम् एको अभ्यर्चितुम् इच्चसि ॥२-८५-
Indeed, your wish, O friend of my teacher, has been fulfilled; for you alone desire to honor such an army of mine.
इति उक्त्वा तु महा तेजा गुहम् वचनम् उत्तमम् । अब्रवीद् भरतः श्रीमान् निषाद अधिपतिम् पुनः ॥२-८५-
Having spoken thus, the illustrious Bharata, radiant in might, again addressed Guha, the lord of the Niṣādas, with excellent words.
कतरेण गमिष्यामि भरद्वाज आश्रमम् गुह । गहनो अयम् भृशम् देशो गन्गा अनूपो दुरत्ययः ॥२-८५-
By which path shall I go to the hermitage of Bharadvāja, O Guha? This region is very dense, and the bank of the Gaṅgā is hard to cross.
तस्य तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा राज पुत्रस्य धीमतः । अब्रवीत् प्रान्जलिर् वाक्यम् गुहो गहन गोचरः ॥२-८५-
Hearing those words of the wise prince, Guha, who knows the ways of the forest, spoke with joined palms.
दाशाः तु अनुगमिष्यन्ति धन्विनः सुसमाहिताः । अहम् च अनुगमिष्यामि राज पुत्र महा यशः ॥२-८५-
The servants, skilled with bows, will accompany you; and I too will follow you, O prince of great fame.
कच्चिन् न दुष्टः व्रजसि रामस्य अक्लिष्ट कर्मणः । इयम् ते महती सेना शन्काम् जनयति इव मे ॥२-८५-
Surely you do not go with evil intent toward Rāma, whose deeds are blameless; this great army of yours causes me some doubt.
तम् एवम् अभिभाषन्तम् आकाशैव निर्मलः । भरतः श्लक्ष्णया वाचा गुहम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-८५-
To him, speaking thus, Bharata replied to Guha with gentle words, clear as the sky.
मा भूत् स कालो यत् कष्टम् न माम् शन्कितुम् अर्हसि । राघवः स हि मे भ्राता ज्येष्ठः पितृ समः मम ॥२-८५-
Let there never be such a time of misfortune; you should not suspect me. Rāghava is my elder brother, equal to my father.
तम् निवर्तयितुम् यामि काकुत्स्थम् वन वासिनम् । बुद्धिर् अन्या न ते कार्या गुह सत्यम् ब्रवीमि ते ॥२-८५-
I am going to bring back Kakutstha, who dwells in the forest; do not entertain any other thought—Guha, I speak the truth to you.
स तु सम्हृष्ट वदनः श्रुत्वा भरत भाषितम् । पुनर् एव अब्रवीद् वाक्यम् भरतम् प्रति हर्षितः ॥२-८५-
Hearing Bharata's words, Guha's face became joyful, and again he spoke to Bharata, delighted.
धन्यः त्वम् न त्वया तुल्यम् पश्यामि जगती तले । अयत्नात् आगतम् राज्यम् यः त्वम् त्यक्तुम् इह इच्चसि ॥२-८५-
Blessed are you; I see no one on earth equal to you, who wish to renounce a kingdom that has come to you without effort.
शाश्वती खलु ते कीर्तिर् लोकान् अनुचरिष्यति । यः त्वम् कृच्च्र गतम् रामम् प्रत्यानयितुम् इच्चसि ॥२-८५-
Surely your fame will follow you through the worlds, for you wish to bring back Rāma, who has fallen into hardship.
एवम् सम्भाषमाणस्य गुहस्य भरतम् तदा । बभौ नष्ट प्रभः सूर्यो रजनी च अभ्यवर्तत ॥२-८५-
As Guha was thus conversing with Bharata, the sun lost its brilliance and night approached.
सम्निवेश्य स ताम् सेनाम् गुहेन परितोषितः । शत्रुघ्नेन सह श्रीमान् शयनम् पुनर् आगमत् ॥२-८५-
Having arranged the army, Guha was satisfied, and together with Shatrughna, the illustrious one returned again to his resting place.
राम चिन्तामयः शोको भरतस्य महात्मनः । उपस्थितः हि अनर्हस्य धर्म प्रेक्षस्य तादृशः ॥२-८५-
Then, a sorrow born of anxious thought came upon the great-souled Bharata, who did not deserve such grief, being so devoted to righteousness.
अन्तर् दाहेन दहनः सम्तापयति राघवम् । वन दाह अभिसम्तप्तम् गूढो अग्निर् इव पादपम् ॥२-८५-
An inner burning tormented Rāghava, as a hidden fire scorches a tree parched by the forest blaze.
प्रस्रुतः सर्व गात्रेभ्यः स्वेदः शोक अग्नि सम्भवः । यथा सूर्य अम्शु सम्तप्तः हिमवान् प्रस्रुतः हिमम् ॥२-८५-
Sweat, arising from the fire of grief, flowed from all his limbs, just as the Himalaya, heated by the sun's rays, releases its snow.
ध्यान निर्दर शैलेन विनिह्श्वसित धातुना । दैन्य पादप सम्घेन शोक आयास अधिशृन्गिणा ॥२-८५-
With the mountain of meditation as his cavern, with sighs as its minerals, with the multitude of dejected trees, and with the peaks of sorrow and fatigue—
प्रमोह अनन्त सत्त्वेन सम्ताप ओषधि वेणुना । आक्रान्तः दुह्ख शैलेन महता कैकयी सुतः ॥२-८५-
He was overwhelmed by the great mountain of suffering, by the endless force of bewilderment, by the bamboo of burning pain, and by the herbs of distress—the son of Kaikeyi.
विनिश्श्वसन्वै भृशदुर्मनास्ततः । प्रमूढसम्ज्ञः परमापदम् गतः । शमम् न लेभे हृदयज्वरार्दितो । नरर्षभो यूथहतो यथर्षभः ॥२-८५-
Sighing deeply, his mind greatly troubled, his awareness confused, fallen into dire misfortune, he found no peace, tormented by the fever of his heart, like a bull struck down from its herd.
गुहेन सार्धम् भरतः समागतः । महा अनुभावः सजनः समाहितः । सुदुर्मनाः तम् भरतम् तदा पुनर् । गुहः समाश्वासयद् अग्रजम् प्रति ॥२-८५-
Then Guha, of great understanding and accompanied by his people, approached Bharata, who was deeply distressed, and sought to comfort him regarding his elder brother.

Hear now the eighty-sixth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
आचचक्षे अथ सद्भावम् लक्ष्मणस्य महात्मनः । भरताय अप्रमेयाय गुहो गहन गोचरः ॥२-८६-
Then Guha, who dwells in the forest, told Bharata of the noble character of the great-souled Lakṣmaṇa, whose qualities are immeasurable.
तम् जाग्रतम् गुणैर् युक्तम् वर चाप इषु धारिणम् । भ्रातृ गुप्त्य् अर्थम् अत्यन्तम् अहम् लक्ष्मणम् अब्रवम् ॥२-८६-
I spoke to Lakṣmaṇa, who remained awake, endowed with virtues, holding his excellent bow and arrows, ever intent on protecting his brother.
इयम् तात सुखा शय्या त्वद् अर्थम् उपकल्पिता । प्रत्याश्वसिहि शेष्व अस्याम् सुखम् राघव नन्दन ॥२-८६-
Dear one, here is a comfortable bed prepared for you; be at ease and rest upon it happily, O delight of the Raghus.
उचितो अयम् जनः सर्वे दुह्खानाम् त्वम् सुख उचितः । धर्म आत्ममः तस्य गुप्त्य् अर्थम् जागरिष्यामहे वयम् ॥२-८६-
All these people are accustomed to hardship, but you are worthy of comfort; we shall keep watch for the sake of protecting this righteous one.
न हि रामात् प्रियतरो मम अस्ति भुवि कश्चन । मा उत्सुको भूर् ब्रवीम्य् एतद् अप्य् असत्यम् तव अग्रतः ॥२-८६-
There is no one on earth dearer to me than Rāma; do not be anxious—I say this truly before you.
