यथा तु खलु दुर्भद्धिर्भरतः स्वयमागतः । स एष हि महा कायः कोविदार ध्वजो रथे ॥२-८४-
Indeed, Bharata himself, of formidable strength, has come, with a banner bearing the kovidāra tree on his chariot.
बन्धयिष्यति वा दाशान् अथ वा अस्मान् वधिष्यति । अथ दाशरथिम् रामम् पित्रा राज्यात् विवासितम् ॥२-८४-
He may bind the Nishadas, or perhaps kill us; or, since Rama, son of Dasharatha, was exiled from the kingdom by his father—
सम्पन्नाम् श्रियमन्विच्चम्स्तस्य राज्ञः सुदुर्लभाम् । भरतः कैकेयी पुत्रः हन्तुम् समधिगच्चति ॥२-८४-
Bharata, son of Kaikeyi, seeking to obtain the rare fortune of kingship, may be coming to kill him.
भर्ता चैव सखा चैव रामः दाशरथिर् मम । तस्य अर्थ कामाः सम्नद्धा गन्गा अनूपे अत्र तिष्ठत ॥२-८४-
Rama, son of Dasharatha, is both my lord and my friend; for his sake, let those devoted to him stand ready here on the bank of the Ganga.
तिष्ठन्तु सर्व दाशाः च गन्गाम् अन्वाश्रिता नदीम् । बल युक्ता नदी रक्षा माम्स मूल फल अशनाः ॥२-८४-
Let all the Nishadas, strong and able, who live along the Ganga, remain here, guarding the river and subsisting on meat, roots, and fruits.
नावाम् शतानाम् पन्चानाम् कैवर्तानाम् शतम् शतम् । सम्नद्धानाम् तथा यूनाम् तिष्ठन्तु अत्यभ्यचोदयत् ॥२-८४-
Let five hundred boatmen, well-armed and youthful, stand ready, each group of a hundred for each hundred boats.
यदा तुष्टः तु भरतः रामस्य इह भविष्यति । सा इयम् स्वस्तिमयी सेना गन्गाम् अद्य तरिष्यति ॥२-८४-
When Bharata is satisfied with Rama here, then this army, blessed with good fortune, will cross the Ganga today.
इति उक्त्वा उपायनम् गृह्य मत्स्य माम्स मधूनि च । अभिचक्राम भरतम् निषाद अधिपतिर् गुहः ॥२-८४-
Having spoken thus and taking gifts of fish, meat, and honey, Guha, the lord of the Nishadas, approached Bharata.
तम् आयान्तम् तु सम्प्रेक्ष्य सूत पुत्रः प्रतापवान् । भरताय आचचक्षे अथ विनयज्ञो विनीतवत् ॥२-८४-
Seeing him approaching, Sumantra, the wise and courteous charioteer, informed Bharata accordingly.
एष ज्ञाति सहस्रेण स्थपतिः परिवारितः । कुशलो दण्डक अरण्ये वृद्धो भ्रातुः च ते सखा ॥२-८४-
This is Guha, the chief, surrounded by a thousand kinsmen, skilled in the Dandaka forest, elder, and your brother's friend.
तस्मात् पश्यतु काकुत्स्थ त्वाम् निषाद अधिपो गुहः । असम्शयम् विजानीते यत्र तौ राम लक्ष्मणौ ॥२-८४-
Therefore, let Guha, the Nishada chief, see you, descendant of Kakutstha; without doubt, he knows where Rama and Lakshmana are.
एतत् तु वचनम् श्रुत्वा सुमन्त्रात् भरतः शुभम् । उवाच वचनम् शीघ्रम् गुहः पश्यतु माम् इति ॥२-८४-
Hearing these auspicious words from Sumantra, Bharata quickly said, 'Let Guha see me.'
लब्ध्वा अभ्यनुज्ञाम् सम्हृष्टः ज्ञातिभिः परिवारितः । आगम्य भरतम् प्रह्वो गुहो वचनम् अब्रवीइत् ॥२-८४-
Having received permission, delighted and surrounded by his kinsmen, Guha approached Bharata and, bowing, spoke these words.
निष्कुटः चैव देशो अयम् वन्चिताः च अपि ते वयम् । निवेदयामः ते सर्वे स्वके दाश कुले वस ॥२-८४-
This place is a settlement, and we too have been deceived; we all inform you—stay in your own community of servants.
अस्ति मूलम् फलम् चैव निषादैः समुपाहृतम् । आर्द्रम् च माम्सम् शुष्कम् च वन्यम् च उच्च अवचम् महत् ॥२-८४-
There are roots and fruits brought by the Niṣādas, as well as fresh and dried meat, and abundant wild food, both high and low.
आशम्से स्वाशिता सेना वत्स्यति इमाम् विभावरीम् । अर्चितः विविधैः कामैः श्वः ससैन्यो गमिष्यसि ॥२-८४-
I hope your army, having eaten, will spend this night here; honored with various desires fulfilled, tomorrow you will depart with your troops.

The eighty-fifth sarga is recited in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
एवम् उक्तः तु भरतः निषाद अधिपतिम् गुहम् । प्रत्युवाच महा प्राज्ञो वाक्यम् हेतु अर्थ सम्हितम् ॥२-८५-
Thus addressed, Bharata, wise and discerning, replied to Guha, the lord of the Niṣādas, with words joined to reason and purpose.
ऊर्जितः खलु ते कामः कृतः मम गुरोह् सखे । यो मे त्वम् ईदृशीम् सेनाम् एको अभ्यर्चितुम् इच्चसि ॥२-८५-
Indeed, your wish, O friend of my teacher, has been fulfilled; for you alone desire to honor such an army of mine.
इति उक्त्वा तु महा तेजा गुहम् वचनम् उत्तमम् । अब्रवीद् भरतः श्रीमान् निषाद अधिपतिम् पुनः ॥२-८५-
Having spoken thus, the illustrious Bharata, radiant in might, again addressed Guha, the lord of the Niṣādas, with excellent words.
कतरेण गमिष्यामि भरद्वाज आश्रमम् गुह । गहनो अयम् भृशम् देशो गन्गा अनूपो दुरत्ययः ॥२-८५-
By which path shall I go to the hermitage of Bharadvāja, O Guha? This region is very dense, and the bank of the Gaṅgā is hard to cross.
तस्य तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा राज पुत्रस्य धीमतः । अब्रवीत् प्रान्जलिर् वाक्यम् गुहो गहन गोचरः ॥२-८५-
Hearing those words of the wise prince, Guha, who knows the ways of the forest, spoke with joined palms.
दाशाः तु अनुगमिष्यन्ति धन्विनः सुसमाहिताः । अहम् च अनुगमिष्यामि राज पुत्र महा यशः ॥२-८५-
The servants, skilled with bows, will accompany you; and I too will follow you, O prince of great fame.
कच्चिन् न दुष्टः व्रजसि रामस्य अक्लिष्ट कर्मणः । इयम् ते महती सेना शन्काम् जनयति इव मे ॥२-८५-
Surely you do not go with evil intent toward Rāma, whose deeds are blameless; this great army of yours causes me some doubt.
तम् एवम् अभिभाषन्तम् आकाशैव निर्मलः । भरतः श्लक्ष्णया वाचा गुहम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-८५-
To him, speaking thus, Bharata replied to Guha with gentle words, clear as the sky.
मा भूत् स कालो यत् कष्टम् न माम् शन्कितुम् अर्हसि । राघवः स हि मे भ्राता ज्येष्ठः पितृ समः मम ॥२-८५-
Let there never be such a time of misfortune; you should not suspect me. Rāghava is my elder brother, equal to my father.
तम् निवर्तयितुम् यामि काकुत्स्थम् वन वासिनम् । बुद्धिर् अन्या न ते कार्या गुह सत्यम् ब्रवीमि ते ॥२-८५-
I am going to bring back Kakutstha, who dwells in the forest; do not entertain any other thought—Guha, I speak the truth to you.
स तु सम्हृष्ट वदनः श्रुत्वा भरत भाषितम् । पुनर् एव अब्रवीद् वाक्यम् भरतम् प्रति हर्षितः ॥२-८५-
Hearing Bharata's words, Guha's face became joyful, and again he spoke to Bharata, delighted.
धन्यः त्वम् न त्वया तुल्यम् पश्यामि जगती तले । अयत्नात् आगतम् राज्यम् यः त्वम् त्यक्तुम् इह इच्चसि ॥२-८५-
Blessed are you; I see no one on earth equal to you, who wish to renounce a kingdom that has come to you without effort.
शाश्वती खलु ते कीर्तिर् लोकान् अनुचरिष्यति । यः त्वम् कृच्च्र गतम् रामम् प्रत्यानयितुम् इच्चसि ॥२-८५-
Surely your fame will follow you through the worlds, for you wish to bring back Rāma, who has fallen into hardship.
