When shall we see Rāma, dark as a rain cloud, mighty-armed, steadfast in spirit, firm in his vows, the remover of the world's sorrow?
For just by seeing him, Rāghava will dispel our grief, like the rising sun driving away the darkness of all the world.
Thus speaking among themselves, joyful and sharing auspicious words, the citizens embraced one another and departed.

Having traveled a long distance by chariots, vehicles, horses, and elephants, they reached the Gaṅgā near Śṛṅgiverapura.
There, Rāma's friend, the heroic Guha, surrounded by his kinsmen, dwelt vigilantly, protecting that region.
Reaching the bank of the Gaṅgā, adorned with wheels and axes, that army accompanying Bharata halted there.
Seeing the army that had followed and the auspicious waters of the Gaṅgā, Bharata, skilled in speech, addressed all his ministers:
Set up my army everywhere as appropriate; after resting, we shall cross this great river tomorrow.

And I wish now to offer water for the departed king, for the sake of the funeral rites, having descended to the river.

Having arrayed the army, resplendent with its equipment, along the great river Ganga, Bharata, pondering over Rama's return, remained there with his noble followers.

This great army, shining like the ocean, can be seen here; even after much thought, I cannot discern its end.

Indeed, Bharata himself, of formidable strength, has come, with a banner bearing the kovidāra tree on his chariot.

Rama, son of Dasharatha, is both my lord and my friend; for his sake, let those devoted to him stand ready here on the bank of the Ganga.

Let all the Nishadas, strong and able, who live along the Ganga, remain here, guarding the river and subsisting on meat, roots, and fruits.
