यदि तु आर्यम् न शक्ष्यामि विनिवर्तयितुम् वनात् । वने तत्र एव वत्स्यामि यथा आर्यो लक्ष्मणः तथा ॥२-८२-
But if I am unable to bring back my noble brother from the forest, I will remain there in the forest, just as Lakshmana does.
सर्व उपायम् तु वर्तिष्ये विनिवर्तयितुम् बलात् । समक्षम् आर्य मिश्राणाम् साधूनाम् गुण वर्तिनाम् ॥२-८२-
I will use every means to bring him back by force, in the presence of elders, the virtuous, and those devoted to good conduct.
विष्टिकर्मान्तिकाः सर्वे मार्गशोधनरक्षकाः । प्रस्थापिता मया पूर्वम् यात्रापि मम रोचते ॥२-८२-
All the carpenters and road-clearers and guards have already been sent ahead by me; the journey also pleases me.
एवम् उक्त्वा तु धर्म आत्मा भरतः भ्रातृ वत्सलः । समीपस्थम् उवाच इदम् सुमन्त्रम् मन्त्र कोविदम् ॥२-८२-
Having spoken thus, the righteous Bharata, devoted to his brother, addressed these words to Sumantra, the wise counselor, who stood nearby:
तूर्णम् उत्थाय गच्च त्वम् सुमन्त्र मम शासनात् । यात्राम् आज्ञापय क्षिप्रम् बलम् चैव समानय ॥२-८२-
Rise quickly and go, Sumantra, at my command; immediately order the march and assemble the army.
एवम् उक्तः सुमन्त्रः तु भरतेन महात्मना । हृष्टः सो अदिशत् सर्वम् यथा सम्दिष्टम् इष्टवत् ॥२-८२-
Thus addressed by the great-souled Bharata, Sumantra, delighted, gave all the orders exactly as instructed and as desired.
ताः प्रहृष्टाः प्रकृतयो बल अध्यक्षा बलस्य च । श्रुत्वा यात्राम् समाज्ञप्ताम् राघवस्य निवर्तने ॥२-८२-
Hearing the command for the march to bring back Rāghava, the delighted citizens, the army commanders, and the troops rejoiced.
ततः योध अन्गनाः सर्वा भर्तृऋन् सर्वान् गृहे गृहे । यात्रा गमनम् आज्ञाय त्वरयन्ति स्म हर्षिताः ॥२-८२-
Then all the wives of the warriors, in every house, joyfully urged their husbands to prepare for the journey as the march was announced.
ते हयैः गो रथैः शीघ्रैः स्यन्दनैः च मनो जवैः । सह योधैः बल अध्यक्षा बलम् सर्वम् अचोदयन् ॥२-८२-
With swift horses, ox-carts, and fast-moving chariots, the army commanders, along with the warriors, mobilized the entire force.
सज्जम् तु तत् बलम् दृष्ट्वा भरतः गुरु सम्निधौ । रथम् मे त्वरयस्व इति सुमन्त्रम् पार्श्वतः अब्रवीत् ॥२-८२-
Seeing the army ready in the presence of his elders, Bharata said to Sumantra at his side, 'Hasten my chariot.'
भरतस्य तु तस्य आज्ञाम् प्रतिगृह्य प्रहर्षितः । रथम् गृहीत्वा प्रययौ युक्तम् परम वाजिभिः ॥२-८२-
Receiving Bharata's command with joy, Sumantra brought forth the chariot, yoked with excellent horses, and set out.
स राघवः सत्य धृतिः प्रतापवान् । ब्रुवन् सुयुक्तम् दृढ सत्य विक्रमः । गुरुम् महा अरण्य गतम् यशस्विनम् । प्रसादयिष्यन् भरतः अब्रवीत् तदा ॥२-८२-
That Rāghava, steadfast in truth and mighty in valor, who spoke well and acted with firm resolve, Bharata, wishing to appease his illustrious elder gone to the great forest, then spoke.
तूण समुत्थाय सुमन्त्र गच्च । बलस्य योगाय बल प्रधानान् । आनेतुम् इच्चामि हि तम् वनस्थम् । प्रसाद्य रामम् जगतः हिताय ॥२-८२-
Rise quickly, Sumantra, go to the chiefs of the army for its assembly; for I wish to bring back Rāma, who dwells in the forest, for the welfare of the world.
स सूत पुत्रः भरतेन सम्यग् । आज्ञापितः सम्परिपूर्ण कामः । शशास सर्वान् प्रकृति प्रधानान् । बलस्य मुख्यामः च सुहृज् जनम् च ॥२-८२-
Thus fully satisfied by Bharata's proper command, the charioteer's son ordered all the chief citizens, the leaders of the army, and his friends.
ततः समुत्थाय कुले कुले ते । राजन्य वैश्या वृषलाः च विप्राः । अयूयुजन्न् उष्ट्र रथान् खरामः च। नागान् हयामः चैव कुल प्रसूतान् ॥२-८२-
Then, in every household, the kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, śūdras, and brāhmaṇas yoked camels, chariots, mules, elephants, and horses, all bred in noble families.

ततः समुत्थितः काल्यम् आस्थाय स्यन्दन उत्तमम् । प्रययौ भरतः शीघ्रम् राम दर्शन कान्क्षया ॥२-८३-
Then, rising early and mounting his excellent chariot, Bharata set out swiftly, longing to see Rāma.
अग्रतः प्रययुस् तस्य सर्वे मन्त्रि पुरोधसः । अधिरुह्य हयैः युक्तान् रथान् सूर्य रथ उपमान् ॥२-८३-
All his ministers and priests went before him, mounting chariots yoked with horses, shining like the chariot of the sun.
नव नाग सहस्राणि कल्पितानि यथा विधि । अन्वयुर् भरतम् यान्तम् इक्ष्वाकु कुल नन्दनम् ॥२-८३-
Nine thousand well-prepared elephants, as prescribed, followed Bharata, the delight of the Ikṣvāku line, as he departed.
षष्ठी रथ सहस्राणि धन्विनो विविध आयुधाः । अन्वयुर् भरतम् यान्तम् राज पुत्रम् यशस्विनम् ॥२-८३-
Sixty thousand chariots, with archers bearing various weapons, followed Bharata, the illustrious prince, as he went.
शतम् सहस्राणि अश्वानाम् समारूढानि राघवम् । अन्वयुर् भरतम् यान्तम् राज पुत्रम् यशस्विनम् ॥२-८३-
A hundred thousand horses, mounted and ready, followed Bharata, the illustrious prince, as he went.
कैकेयी च सुमित्रा च कौसल्या च यशस्विनी । राम आनयन सम्हृष्टा ययुर् यानेन भास्वता ॥२-८३-
Kaikeyī, Sumitrā, and the illustrious Kausalyā, delighted at the prospect of bringing Rāma back, went in shining vehicles.
प्रयाताः च आर्य सम्घाता रामम् द्रष्टुम् सलक्ष्मणम् । तस्य एव च कथाः चित्राः कुर्वाणा हृष्ट मानसाः ॥२-८३-
And noble assemblies set out to see Rāma together with Lakṣmaṇa, their hearts delighted as they engaged in lively conversations about him.
मेघ श्यामम् महा बाहुम् स्थिर सत्त्वम् दृढ व्रतम् । कदा द्रक्ष्यामहे रामम् जगतः शोक नाशनम् ॥२-८३-
When shall we see Rāma, dark as a rain cloud, mighty-armed, steadfast in spirit, firm in his vows, the remover of the world's sorrow?
दृष्टएव हि नः शोकम् अपनेष्यति राघवः । तमः सर्वस्य लोकस्य समुद्यन्न् इव भास्करः ॥२-८३-
For just by seeing him, Rāghava will dispel our grief, like the rising sun driving away the darkness of all the world.
इति एवम् कथयन्तः ते सम्प्रहृष्टाः कथाः शुभाः । परिष्वजानाः च अन्योन्यम् ययुर् नागरिकाः तदा ॥२-८३-
Thus speaking among themselves, joyful and sharing auspicious words, the citizens embraced one another and departed.
ये च तत्र अपरे सर्वे सम्मता ये च नैगमाः । रामम् प्रति ययुर् हृष्टाः सर्वाः प्रकृतयः तदा ॥२-८३-
And all the others present there, both the esteemed and the townsfolk, joyfully set out toward Rāma, all the people together.
मणि काराः च ये केचित् कुम्भ काराः च शोभनाः । सूत्र कर्म कृतः चैव ये च शस्त्र उपजीविनः ॥२-८३-
There were jewel-workers, skilled potters, those engaged in weaving, and those who made their living by weapons.
मायूरकाः क्राकचिका रोचका वेधकाः तथा । दन्त काराः सुधा काराः तथा गन्ध उपजीविनः ॥२-८३-
There were makers of peacock ornaments, sawyers, carvers, piercers, ivory workers, plasterers, and those who lived by perfumes.
सुवर्ण काराः प्रख्याताः तथा कम्बल धावकाः । स्नापक आच्चादका वैद्या धूपकाः शौण्डिकाः तथा ॥२-८३-
Renowned goldsmiths, blanket washers, bath attendants, clothers, physicians, incense makers, and distillers also went.
