आभिषेचनिकम् भाण्डम् कृत्वा सर्वम् प्रदक्षिणम् । भरतः तम् जनम् सर्वम् प्रत्युवाच धृत व्रतः ॥२-७९-
After circumambulating all the consecration materials, Bharata, firm in his vow, addressed all those people.
ज्येष्ठस्य राजता नित्यम् उचिता हि कुलस्य नः । न एवम् भवन्तः माम् वक्तुम् अर्हन्ति कुशला जनाः ॥२-७९-
'Kingship always belongs to the eldest in our family; wise men like you should not speak to me in this way.'
रामः पूर्वो हि नो भ्राता भविष्यति मही पतिः । अहम् तु अरण्ये वत्स्यामि वर्षाणि नव पन्च च ॥२-७९-
For Rāma is our elder brother and will be king of the earth; but I will dwell in the forest for fourteen years.
युज्यताम् महती सेना चतुर् अन्ग महा बला । आनयिष्याम्य् अहम् ज्येष्ठम् भ्रातरम् राघवम् वनात् ॥२-७९-
Let a great army, mighty and fourfold, be readied; I myself will bring back my elder brother Rāghava from the forest.
आभिषेचनिकम् चैव सर्वम् एतत् उपस्कृतम् । पुरः कृत्य गमिष्यामि राम हेतोर् वनम् प्रति ॥२-७९-
All the consecration materials, fully prepared, will be taken before us; I will go to the forest for Rāma’s sake.
तत्र एव तम् नर व्याघ्रम् अभिषिच्य पुरः कृतम् । आनेष्यामि तु वै रामम् हव्य वाहम् इव अध्वरात् ॥२-७९-
There itself, having consecrated that tiger among men with all due rites, I will bring Rāma back, as the fire is brought from the sacrifice.
न सकामा करिष्यामि स्वम् इमाम् मातृ गन्धिनीम् । वने वत्स्याम्य् अहम् दुर्गे रामः राजा भविष्यति ॥२-७९-
I will not fulfill the wishes of my mother, who smells of selfishness; I will dwell in the harsh forest, and Rāma will be king.
क्रियताम् शिल्पिभिः पन्थाः समानि विषमाणि च । रक्षिणः च अनुसम्यान्तु पथि दुर्ग विचारकाः ॥२-७९-
Let the craftsmen make the road, whether level or uneven; and let guards, skilled in traversing difficult paths, accompany us.
एवम् सम्भाषमाणम् तम् राम हेतोर् नृप आत्मजम् । प्रत्युवाच जनः सर्वः श्रीमद् वाक्यम् अनुत्तमम् ॥२-७९-
As he, the prince, spoke thus for Rāma’s sake, all the people replied with words of great beauty and excellence.
एवम् ते भाषमाणस्य पद्मा श्रीर् उपतिष्ठताम् । यः त्वम् ज्येष्ठे नृप सुते पृथिवीम् दातुम् इच्चसि ॥२-७९-
May the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī, attend you as you speak thus, wishing to give the earth to your elder brother, the prince.
अनुत्तमम् तत् वचनम् नृप आत्मज । प्रभाषितम् सम्श्रवणे निशम्य च । प्रहर्षजाः तम् प्रति बाष्प बिन्दवो । निपेतुर् आर्य आनन नेत्र सम्भवाः ॥२-७९-
Hearing those unsurpassed words spoken by the prince, tears of joy, born from the eyes of noble people, fell upon their faces.
ऊचुस् ते वचनम् इदम् निशम्य हृष्टाः । सामात्याः सपरिषदो वियात शोकाः । पन्थानम् नर वर भक्तिमान् जनः च । व्यादिष्टः तव वचनाच् च शिल्पि वर्गः ॥२-७९-
Hearing this, the ministers and assembly, freed from sorrow, joyfully said: ‘The devoted people and the group of craftsmen have been instructed by your command regarding the road.’

The eightieth sarga is to be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
अथ भूमि प्रदेशज्ञाः सूत्र कर्म विशारदाः । स्व कर्म अभिरताः शूराः खनका यन्त्रकाः तथा ॥२-८०-
Then those skilled in the land, experts in measuring and marking, devoted to their work, brave diggers and engineers, set out.
कर्म अन्तिकाः स्थपतयः पुरुषा यन्त्र कोविदाः । तथा वर्धकयः चैव मार्गिणो वृक्ष तक्षकाः ॥२-८०-
There were also foremen, men skilled with machines, carpenters, road-makers, and tree-cutters.
कूप काराः सुधा कारा वम्श कर्म कृतः तथा । समर्था ये च द्रष्टारः पुरतः ते प्रतस्थिरे ॥२-८०-
Well-diggers, plasterers, those who worked with bamboo, and those capable of surveying, all went ahead.
स तु हर्षात् तम् उद्देशम् जन ओघो विपुलः प्रयान् । अशोभत महा वेगः सागरस्य इव पर्वणि ॥२-८०-
That vast multitude of people, joyful, set out for that place, shining with great speed like the ocean at the full moon.
ते स्व वारम् समास्थाय वर्त्म कर्माणि कोविदाः । करणैः विविध उपेतैः पुरस्तात् सम्प्रतस्थिरे ॥२-८०-
Taking up their assigned tasks, those skilled in roadwork advanced ahead with various tools.
लता वल्लीः च गुल्मामः च स्थाणून् अश्मनएव च । जनाः ते चक्रिरे मार्गम् चिन्दन्तः विविधान् द्रुमान् ॥२-८०-
Cutting through creepers, bushes, shrubs, and even stones, the people cleared the path, felling various trees.
अवृक्षेषु च देशेषु केचित् वृक्षान् अरोपयन् । केचित् कुठारैअः टन्कैः च दात्रैः चिन्दन् क्वचित् क्वचित् ॥२-८०-
In treeless places some planted trees, while others, with axes, hatchets, and sickles, cut them down here and there.
अपरे वीरण स्तम्बान् बलिनो बलवत्तराः । विधमन्ति स्म दुर्गाणि स्थलानि च ततः ततः ॥२-८०-
Others, strong and even stronger, broke up the dense thickets of reeds and cleared the difficult terrains here and there.
अपरे अपूरयन् कूपान् पाम्सुभिः श्वभ्रम् आयतम् । निम्न भागाम्स् तथा केचित् समामः चक्रुः समन्ततः ॥२-८०-
Some filled up wells with sand and deep pits, while others leveled the low-lying areas all around.
बबन्धुर् बन्धनीयामः च क्षोद्यान् सम्चुक्षुदुस् तदा । बिभिदुर् भेदनीयामः च ताम्स् तान् देशान् नराः तदा ॥२-८०-
They bound what needed to be bound, cleared what needed to be cleared, and broke open those places that required breaking.
अचिरेण एव कालेन परिवाहान् बहु उदकान् । चक्रुर् बहु विध आकारान् सागर प्रतिमान् बहून् ॥२-८०-
In a short time, they created many water channels, varied in form and vast like the sea.
निर्जलेषु च देशेषु खानयामासुरुत्तमान् । उदपानान् बहुविधान् वेदिका परिमण्डितान् ॥२-८०-
In dry regions, they dug many excellent wells, adorned with platforms of various shapes.
ससुधा कुट्टिम तलः प्रपुष्पित मही रुहः । मत्त उद्घुष्ट द्विज गणः पताकाभिर् अलम्कृतः ॥२-८०-
With plastered floors, blossoming trees, the calls of intoxicated birds, and adorned with flags, the path was splendid.
चन्दन उदक सम्सिक्तः नाना कुसुम भूषितः । बह्व् अशोभत सेनायाः पन्थाः स्वर्ग पथ उपमः ॥२-८०-
Sprinkled with sandal water and decorated with various flowers, the army’s route shone, resembling the path to heaven.
आज्ञाप्य अथ यथा आज्ञप्ति युक्ताः ते अधिकृता नराः । रमणीयेषु देशेषु बहु स्वादु फलेषु च ॥२-८०-
Then, those appointed officials, acting according to orders, chose delightful places rich with sweet fruits.
यो निवेशः तु अभिप्रेतः भरतस्य महात्मनः । भूयः तम् शोभयाम् आसुर् भूषाभिर् भूषण उपमम् ॥२-८०-
The settlement desired by the noble Bharata was further adorned with ornaments, making it resemble a jewel.
नक्षत्रेषु प्रशस्तेषु मुहूर्तेषु च तद्विदः । निवेशम् स्थापयाम् आसुर् भरतस्य महात्मनः ॥२-८०-
Experts, choosing auspicious stars and moments, established the settlement for the great-souled Bharata.
