ततः सुभृश सम्तप्तः तस्याः सर्वः सखी जनः । क्रुद्धम् आज्ञाय शत्रुघ्नम् व्यपलायत सर्वशः ॥२-७८-
Then, all her companions, greatly distressed, seeing Shatrughna enraged, fled in every direction.
अमन्त्रयत कृत्स्नः च तस्याः सर्व सखी जनः । यथा अयम् समुपक्रान्तः निह्शेषम् नः करिष्यति ॥२-७८-
All her companions conferred together, saying, 'Now that he has come upon us, he will destroy us all completely.'
सानुक्रोशाम् वदान्याम् च धर्मज्ञाम् च यशस्विनीम् । कौसल्याम् शरणम् यामः सा हि नो अस्तु ध्रुवा गतिः ॥२-७८-
'Let us seek refuge with Kausalyā, who is compassionate, generous, righteous, and renowned; she will surely be our safe haven.'
स च रोषेण ताम्र अक्षः शत्रुघ्नः शत्रु तापनः । विचकर्ष तदा कुब्जाम् क्रोशन्तीम् पृथिवी तले ॥२-७८-
Then Shatrughna, his eyes reddened with anger, tormentor of his foes, dragged Kubjā, who was crying out, along the ground.
तस्या हि आकृष्यमाणाया मन्थरायाः ततः ततः । चित्रम् बहु विधम् भाण्डम् पृथिव्याम् तत् व्यशीर्यत ॥२-७८-
As Manthara was being dragged here and there, her many kinds of curious ornaments were scattered upon the ground.
तेन भाण्डेन सम्कीर्णम् श्रीमद् राज निवेशनम् । अशोभत तदा भूयः शारदम् गगनम् यथा ॥२-७८-
With those ornaments strewn about, the splendid royal palace looked, at that moment, like the autumn sky.
स बली बलवत् क्रोधात् गृहीत्वा पुरुष ऋषभः । कैकेयीम् अभिनिर्भर्त्स्य बभाषे परुषम् वचः ॥२-७८-
Then the mighty bull among men, seized by anger, rebuked Kaikeyi harshly and spoke rough words to her.
तैः वाक्यैः परुषैः दुह्खैः कैकेयी भृश दुह्हिता । शत्रुघ्न भय सम्त्रस्ता पुत्रम् शरणम् आगता ॥२-७८-
Struck by those harsh and painful words, Kaikeyi was greatly distressed and, terrified by Shatrughna's anger, sought refuge with her son.
ताम् प्रेक्ष्य भरतः क्रुद्धम् शत्रुघ्नम् इदम् अब्रवीत् । अवध्याः सर्व भूतानाम् प्रमदाः क्षम्यताम् इति ॥२-७८-
Seeing Shatrughna enraged, Bharata said to him: 'Women are not to be slain by any being; forgive her.'
हन्याम् अहम् इमाम् पापाम् कैकेयीम् दुष्ट चारिणीम् । यदि माम् धार्मिको रामः न असूयेन् मातृ घातकम् ॥२-७८-
'I would kill this wicked Kaikeyi, who has acted evilly, if the righteous Rama would not blame me for slaying my mother.'
इमाम् अपि हताम् कुब्जाम् यदि जानाति राघवः । त्वाम् च माम् चैव धर्म आत्मा न अभिभाषिष्यते ध्रुवम् ॥२-७८-
'If Rama, the righteous one, learns that even this hunchback has been killed, he will surely not speak to you or to me.'
भरतस्य वचः श्रुत्वा शत्रुघ्नः लक्ष्मण अनुजः । न्यवर्तत ततः रोषात् ताम् मुमोच च मन्थराम् ॥२-७८-
Hearing Bharata's words, Shatrughna, Lakshmana's younger brother, withdrew from his anger and released Manthara.
सा पाद मूले कैकेय्या मन्थरा निपपात ह । निह्श्वसन्ती सुदुह्ख आर्ता कृपणम् विललाप च ॥२-७८-
Manthara fell at Kaikeyi's feet, gasping and overwhelmed with deep sorrow, and lamented pitiably.
शत्रुघ्न विक्षेप विमूढ सम्ज्ञाम् । समीक्ष्य कुब्जाम् भरतस्य माता । शनैः समाश्वासयद् आर्त रूपाम् । क्रौन्चीम् विलग्नाम् इव वीक्षमाणाम् ॥२-७८-
Seeing the hunchback, her senses bewildered by Shatrughna's violence, Kaikeyi, Bharata's mother, gently comforted her, who looked like a distressed bird clinging to her.

Listen now to the seventy-ninth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
ततः प्रभात समये दिवसे अथ चतुर्दशे । समेत्य राज कर्तारः भरतम् वाक्यम् अब्रुवन् ॥२-७९-
Then, at dawn on the fourteenth day, the royal ministers gathered and spoke to Bharata.
गतः दशरथः स्वर्गम् यो नो गुरुतरः गुरुः । रामम् प्रव्राज्य वै ज्येष्ठम् लक्ष्मणम् च महा बलम् ॥२-७९-
'King Dasharatha, our greatest elder, has gone to heaven, having exiled Rama, the eldest, and mighty Lakshmana.'
त्वम् अद्य भव नो राजा राज पुत्र महा यशः । सम्गत्या न अपराध्नोति राज्यम् एतत् अनायकम् ॥२-७९-
'Now, O prince of great fame, you must be our king today; for, with the kingdom leaderless, it is not proper for us to act otherwise.'
आभिषेचनिकम् सर्वम् इदम् आदाय राघव । प्रतीक्षते त्वाम् स्व जनः श्रेणयः च नृप आत्मज ॥२-७९-
'All the consecration materials are ready, O Rāghava; your people and the guilds, O prince, await you.'
राज्यम् गृहाण भरत पितृ पैतामहम् महत् । अभिषेचय च आत्मानम् पाहि च अस्मान् नर ऋषभ ॥२-७९-
'Accept the kingdom, Bharata, the great inheritance from your father and grandfather; consecrate yourself and protect us, best of men.'
आभिषेचनिकम् भाण्डम् कृत्वा सर्वम् प्रदक्षिणम् । भरतः तम् जनम् सर्वम् प्रत्युवाच धृत व्रतः ॥२-७९-
After circumambulating all the consecration materials, Bharata, firm in his vow, addressed all those people.
ज्येष्ठस्य राजता नित्यम् उचिता हि कुलस्य नः । न एवम् भवन्तः माम् वक्तुम् अर्हन्ति कुशला जनाः ॥२-७९-
'Kingship always belongs to the eldest in our family; wise men like you should not speak to me in this way.'
रामः पूर्वो हि नो भ्राता भविष्यति मही पतिः । अहम् तु अरण्ये वत्स्यामि वर्षाणि नव पन्च च ॥२-७९-
For Rāma is our elder brother and will be king of the earth; but I will dwell in the forest for fourteen years.
युज्यताम् महती सेना चतुर् अन्ग महा बला । आनयिष्याम्य् अहम् ज्येष्ठम् भ्रातरम् राघवम् वनात् ॥२-७९-
Let a great army, mighty and fourfold, be readied; I myself will bring back my elder brother Rāghava from the forest.
आभिषेचनिकम् चैव सर्वम् एतत् उपस्कृतम् । पुरः कृत्य गमिष्यामि राम हेतोर् वनम् प्रति ॥२-७९-
All the consecration materials, fully prepared, will be taken before us; I will go to the forest for Rāma’s sake.
तत्र एव तम् नर व्याघ्रम् अभिषिच्य पुरः कृतम् । आनेष्यामि तु वै रामम् हव्य वाहम् इव अध्वरात् ॥२-७९-
There itself, having consecrated that tiger among men with all due rites, I will bring Rāma back, as the fire is brought from the sacrifice.
न सकामा करिष्यामि स्वम् इमाम् मातृ गन्धिनीम् । वने वत्स्याम्य् अहम् दुर्गे रामः राजा भविष्यति ॥२-७९-
I will not fulfill the wishes of my mother, who smells of selfishness; I will dwell in the harsh forest, and Rāma will be king.
क्रियताम् शिल्पिभिः पन्थाः समानि विषमाणि च । रक्षिणः च अनुसम्यान्तु पथि दुर्ग विचारकाः ॥२-७९-
Let the craftsmen make the road, whether level or uneven; and let guards, skilled in traversing difficult paths, accompany us.
एवम् सम्भाषमाणम् तम् राम हेतोर् नृप आत्मजम् । प्रत्युवाच जनः सर्वः श्रीमद् वाक्यम् अनुत्तमम् ॥२-७९-
As he, the prince, spoke thus for Rāma’s sake, all the people replied with words of great beauty and excellence.
एवम् ते भाषमाणस्य पद्मा श्रीर् उपतिष्ठताम् । यः त्वम् ज्येष्ठे नृप सुते पृथिवीम् दातुम् इच्चसि ॥२-७९-
May the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī, attend you as you speak thus, wishing to give the earth to your elder brother, the prince.
