भृशम् आर्ततरा भूयः सर्वएव अनुगामिनः । ततः विषण्णौ श्रान्तौ च शत्रुघ्न भरताव् उभौ ॥२-७७-
All those who followed them became even more deeply afflicted; then both Shatrughna and Bharata, exhausted and despondent—
धरण्याम् सम्व्यचेष्टेताम् भग्न शृन्गाव् इव ऋषभौ । ततः प्रकृतिमान् वैद्यः पितुर् एषाम् पुरोहितः ॥२-७७-
Lay upon the ground, writhing like two bulls with broken horns; then the wise and proper priest of their father—
वसिष्ठो भरतम् वाक्यम् उत्थाप्य तम् उवाच ह । त्रयोदशोऽयम् दिवसः पितुर्वृत्तस्य ते विभो ॥२-७७-
Vasishtha, raising Bharata, spoke to him: 'O illustrious one, this is the thirteenth day since your father's passing.'
सावशेषास्थिनिचये किमिह त्वम् विलम्बसे । त्रीणि द्वन्द्वानि भूतेषु प्रवृत्तानि अविशेषतः ॥२-७७-
'With only the bones remaining, why do you delay here? Among all beings, three pairs of opposites inevitably arise.'
तेषु च अपरिहार्येषु न एवम् भवितुम् अर्हति । सुमन्त्रः च अपि शत्रुघ्नम् उत्थाप्य अभिप्रसाद्य च ॥२-७७-
'In these unavoidable matters, it should not be thus.' Sumantra, too, raised Shatrughna and comforted him.
श्रावयाम् आस तत्त्वज्ञः सर्व भूत भव अभवौ । उत्थितौ तौ नर व्याघ्रौ प्रकाशेते यशस्विनौ ॥२-७७-
The wise Sumantra made them hear the truth of the coming and going of all beings; those two tiger-like men, rising up, shone forth in their glory.
वर्ष आतप परिक्लिन्नौ पृथग् इन्द्र ध्वजाव् इव । अश्रूणि परिमृद्नन्तौ रक्त अक्षौ दीन भाषिणौ ॥२-७७-
Drenched by rain and scorched by the sun, they appeared like two separate Indra-banners; wiping away their tears, their eyes red, they spoke in voices heavy with sorrow.

Listen to the seventy-eighth chapter in the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
अत्र यात्राम् समीहन्तम् शत्रुघ्नः लक्ष्मण अनुजः । भरतम् शोक सम्तप्तम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-७८-
As Bharata, tormented by grief, was preparing for the journey, Shatrughna, Lakṣmaṇa’s younger brother, spoke these words to him.
गतिर् यः सर्व भूतानाम् दुह्खे किम् पुनर् आत्मनः । स रामः सत्त्व सम्पन्नः स्त्रिया प्रव्राजितः वनम् ॥२-७८-
He who is the refuge of all beings—what suffering must he not feel for himself? That Rāma, endowed with virtue, has been exiled to the forest by a woman.
बलवान् वीर्य सम्पन्नो लक्ष्मणो नाम यो अपि असौ । किम् न मोचयते रामम् कृत्वा अपि पितृ निग्रहम् ॥२-७८-
Lakṣmaṇa, strong and full of valor—why does he not free Rāma, even if it means restraining our father?
पूर्वम् एव तु निग्राह्यः समवेक्ष्य नय अनयौ । उत्पथम् यः समारूढो नार्या राजा वशम् गतः ॥२-७८-
Our father, who has fallen under the sway of a woman and strayed from the right path, should have been restrained earlier, seeing both right and wrong.
इति सम्भाषमाणे तु शत्रुघ्ने लक्ष्मण अनुजे । प्राग् द्वारे अभूत् तदा कुब्जा सर्व आभरण भूषिता ॥२-७८-
As Shatrughna, Lakṣmaṇa’s younger brother, was speaking thus, Kubjā, adorned with all her ornaments, appeared at the eastern gate.
लिप्ता चन्दन सारेण राज वस्त्राणि बिभ्रती । विविधम् विविधैस्तैस्तैर्भूषणैश्च विभूषिता ॥२-७८-
Smeared with fine sandalwood paste, wearing royal garments, and adorned with various kinds of ornaments, she shone brightly.
मेखला दामभिः चित्रै रज्जु बद्धा इव वानरी । बभासे बहुभिर्बद्धा रज्जुबद्देव वानरी ॥२-७८-
With her jeweled girdles and many cords, she looked like a monkey bound with many ropes.
ताम् समीक्ष्य तदा द्वाह्स्थो भृशम् पापस्य कारिणीम् । गृहीत्वा अकरुणम् कुब्जाम् शत्रुघ्नाय न्यवेदयत् ॥२-७८-
Seeing her, the doorkeeper, recognizing her as the perpetrator of evil, seized the pitiless Kubjā and presented her to Shatrughna.
यस्याः कृते वने रामः न्यस्त देहः च वः पिता । सा इयम् पापा नृशम्सा च तस्याः कुरु यथा मति ॥२-७८-
Because of her, Rāma was sent to the forest and your father gave up his life; here is that wicked and cruel woman—do with her as you see fit.
शत्रुघ्नः च तत् आज्ञाय वचनम् भृश दुह्खितः । अन्तः पुर चरान् सर्वान् इति उवाच धृत व्रतः ॥२-७८-
Hearing these words, Shatrughna, deeply distressed but firm in his resolve, addressed all the attendants of the inner palace.
तीव्रम् उत्पादितम् दुह्खम् भ्रातृऋणाम् मे तथा पितुः । यया सा इयम् नृशम्सस्य कर्मणः फलम् अश्नुताम् ॥२-७८-
By whom such intense suffering was caused to my brothers and my father, let her now reap the fruit of her cruel deed.
एवम् उक्ता च तेन आशु सखी जन समावृता । गृहीता बलवत् कुब्जा सा तत् गृहम् अनादयत् ॥२-७८-
Thus addressed, Kubjā, surrounded by her companions, was quickly seized with force and wailed as she was dragged to that house.
ततः सुभृश सम्तप्तः तस्याः सर्वः सखी जनः । क्रुद्धम् आज्ञाय शत्रुघ्नम् व्यपलायत सर्वशः ॥२-७८-
Then, all her companions, greatly distressed, seeing Shatrughna enraged, fled in every direction.
अमन्त्रयत कृत्स्नः च तस्याः सर्व सखी जनः । यथा अयम् समुपक्रान्तः निह्शेषम् नः करिष्यति ॥२-७८-
All her companions conferred together, saying, 'Now that he has come upon us, he will destroy us all completely.'
सानुक्रोशाम् वदान्याम् च धर्मज्ञाम् च यशस्विनीम् । कौसल्याम् शरणम् यामः सा हि नो अस्तु ध्रुवा गतिः ॥२-७८-
'Let us seek refuge with Kausalyā, who is compassionate, generous, righteous, and renowned; she will surely be our safe haven.'
स च रोषेण ताम्र अक्षः शत्रुघ्नः शत्रु तापनः । विचकर्ष तदा कुब्जाम् क्रोशन्तीम् पृथिवी तले ॥२-७८-
Then Shatrughna, his eyes reddened with anger, tormentor of his foes, dragged Kubjā, who was crying out, along the ground.
तस्या हि आकृष्यमाणाया मन्थरायाः ततः ततः । चित्रम् बहु विधम् भाण्डम् पृथिव्याम् तत् व्यशीर्यत ॥२-७८-
As Manthara was being dragged here and there, her many kinds of curious ornaments were scattered upon the ground.
तेन भाण्डेन सम्कीर्णम् श्रीमद् राज निवेशनम् । अशोभत तदा भूयः शारदम् गगनम् यथा ॥२-७८-
With those ornaments strewn about, the splendid royal palace looked, at that moment, like the autumn sky.
स बली बलवत् क्रोधात् गृहीत्वा पुरुष ऋषभः । कैकेयीम् अभिनिर्भर्त्स्य बभाषे परुषम् वचः ॥२-७८-
Then the mighty bull among men, seized by anger, rebuked Kaikeyi harshly and spoke rough words to her.
तैः वाक्यैः परुषैः दुह्खैः कैकेयी भृश दुह्हिता । शत्रुघ्न भय सम्त्रस्ता पुत्रम् शरणम् आगता ॥२-७८-
Struck by those harsh and painful words, Kaikeyi was greatly distressed and, terrified by Shatrughna's anger, sought refuge with her son.
ताम् प्रेक्ष्य भरतः क्रुद्धम् शत्रुघ्नम् इदम् अब्रवीत् । अवध्याः सर्व भूतानाम् प्रमदाः क्षम्यताम् इति ॥२-७८-
Seeing Shatrughna enraged, Bharata said to him: 'Women are not to be slain by any being; forgive her.'
हन्याम् अहम् इमाम् पापाम् कैकेयीम् दुष्ट चारिणीम् । यदि माम् धार्मिको रामः न असूयेन् मातृ घातकम् ॥२-७८-
'I would kill this wicked Kaikeyi, who has acted evilly, if the righteous Rama would not blame me for slaying my mother.'
