आत्म कामा सदा चण्डी क्रोधना प्राज्ञ मानिनी । अरोगा च अपि कैकेयी माता मे किम् उवाच ह ॥२-७०-
My mother Kaikeyi, ever self-willed, fierce, quick to anger, wise, and proud, and even in good health—what did she say to me?
एवम् उक्ताः तु ते दूता भरतेन महात्मना । ऊचुः सम्प्रश्रितम् वाक्यम् इदम् तम् भरतम् तदा ॥२-७०-
Thus addressed by the noble Bharata, those messengers spoke these respectful words to him at that time.
कुशलाः ते नर व्याघ्र येषाम् कुशलम् इच्चसि । श्रीश्च त्वाम् वृणुते पद्मा युज्यताम् चापि ते रकः ॥२-७०-
O tiger among men, those for whom you wish well are well; fortune and the lotus goddess choose you, and may your protection be secured.
भरतः च अपि तान् दूतान् एवम् उक्तः अभ्यभाषत । आपृच्चे अहम् महा राजम् दूताः सम्त्वरयन्ति माम् ॥२-७०-
Bharata, thus spoken to by the messengers, replied: 'I will take leave of the great king; the messengers urge me to hurry.'
एवम् उक्त्वा तु तान् दूतान् भरतः पार्थिव आत्मजः । दूतैः सम्चोदितः वाक्यम् मातामहम् उवाच ह ॥२-७०-
Having thus spoken to the messengers, Bharata, son of the king, prompted by their words, addressed his maternal grandfather.
राजन् पितुर् गमिष्यामि सकाशम् दूत चोदितः । पुनर् अपि अहम् एष्यामि यदा मे त्वम् स्मरिष्यसि ॥२-७०-
'O King, urged by the messengers, I will go to my father's presence; I will return again whenever you remember me.'
भरतेन एवम् उक्तः तु नृपो मातामहः तदा । तम् उवाच शुभम् वाक्यम् शिरस्य् आघ्राय राघवम् ॥२-७०-
Then, addressed thus by Bharata, the king, his maternal grandfather, spoke auspicious words to him, embracing Raghava's head.
गच्च तात अनुजाने त्वाम् कैकेयी सुप्रजाः त्वया । मातरम् कुशलम् ब्रूयाः पितरम् च परम् तप ॥२-७०-
'Go, dear child, I permit you; Kaikeyi is blessed with a son like you. Convey my well-wishes to your mother and your father, the supreme ascetic.'
पुरोहितम् च कुशलम् ये च अन्ये द्विज सत्तमाः । तौ च तात महा इष्वासौ भ्रातरु राम लक्ष्मणौ ॥२-७०-
'Also greet the priest, and all other excellent twice-born men; and, dear child, those two mighty archers, your brothers Rama and Lakshmana.'
तस्मै हस्ति उत्तमामः चित्रान् कम्बलान् अजिनानि च । अभिसत्कृत्य कैकेयो भरताय धनम् ददौ ॥२-७०-
To him, the Kaikeyan, after honoring Bharata, gave the best elephant, fine blankets, and skins, as wealth.
रुक्म निष्क सहस्रे द्वे षोडश अश्व शतानि च । सत्कृत्य कैकेयी पुत्रम् केकयो धनम् आदिशत् ॥२-७०-
After honoring Kaikeyi's son, the Kekaya king ordered two thousand gold coins and sixteen hundred horses as gifts.
तथा अमात्यान् अभिप्रेतान् विश्वास्यामः च गुण अन्वितान् । ददाव् अश्व पतिः शीघ्रम् भरताय अनुयायिनः ॥२-७०-
Likewise, the lord of horses quickly gave to Bharata trusted and virtuous ministers, as desired attendants.
ऐरावतान् ऐन्द्र शिरान् नागान् वै प्रिय दर्शनान् । खरान् शीघ्रान् सुसम्युक्तान् मातुलो अस्मै धनम् ददौ ॥२-७०-
His maternal uncle gave him elephants of the Airavata line, with Indra-like heads, pleasing to behold, and swift, well-harnessed mules as wealth.
अन्तः पुरे अतिसम्वृद्धान् व्याघ्र वीर्य बल अन्वितान् । दम्ष्ट्र आयुधान् महा कायान् शुनः च उपायनम् ददौ ॥२-७०-
He gave as gifts dogs raised within the palace, endowed with tiger-like strength and power, armed with fangs, of great size.
स मातामहम् आपृच्च्य मातुलम् च युधा जितम् । रथम् आरुह्य भरतः शत्रुघ्न सहितः ययौ ॥२-७०-
Having taken leave of his maternal grandfather and uncle, victorious in battle, Bharata, together with Shatrughna, mounted his chariot and departed.
बभूव ह्यस्य हृदते चिन्ता सुमहती तदा । त्वरया चापि दूतानाम् स्वप्नस्यापि च दर्शनात् ॥२-७०-
At that time, a great anxiety arose in his heart, due to the urgency of the messengers and the vision seen in his dream.
स स्ववेश्माभ्यतिक्रम्य नरनागश्वसम्वृतम् । प्रपेदे सुमहच्छ्रीमान् राजमार्गमनुत्तमम् ॥२-७०-
He left his own residence, surrounded by men, elephants, and horses, and entered the splendid, unrivaled royal road.
अभ्यतीत्य ततोऽपश्यदन्तः पुरमुदारधीः । ततस्तद्भरतः श्रीमानाविवेशानिवारितः ॥२-७०-
Passing through, the noble-minded Bharata saw the inner city; then, the illustrious Bharata entered it, unhindered.
स माता महमापृच्च्य मातुलम् च युधाजितम् । रथमारुह्य भरतः शत्रुघ्नसहितो ययौ ॥२-७०-
Having taken leave of his mother and his maternal uncle Yudhājit, Bharata, together with Śatrughna, ascended the chariot and departed.
रथान् मण्डल चक्रामः च योजयित्वा परः शतम् । उष्ट्र गो अश्व खरैः भृत्या भरतम् यान्तम् अन्वयुः ॥२-७०-
After harnessing more than a hundred chariots with circular wheels, servants followed Bharata as he set out, using camels, cattle, horses, and mules.
बलेन गुप्तः भरतः महात्मा । सह आर्यकस्य आत्म समैः अमात्यैः । आदाय शत्रुघ्नम् अपेत शत्रुर् । गृहात् ययौ सिद्धैव इन्द्र लोकात् ॥२-७०-
Protected by his army, the noble Bharata, accompanied by ministers equal in status to Āryaka, took Śatrughna, free from enemies, and departed from the house as if from Indra's world.

स प्रान् मुखो राज गृहात् अभिनिर्याय वीर्यवान् । ततः सुदामाम् द्युतिमान् सम्तीर्वावेक्ष्य ताम् नदीम् ॥२-७१-
That valiant one, with his face turned forward, departed from the royal palace; then, beholding the radiant Sudāmā river, he crossed it.
ह्लादिनीम् दूर पाराम् च प्रत्यक् स्रोतः तरन्गिणीम् । शतद्रूम् अतरत् श्रीमान् नदीम् इक्ष्वाकु नन्दनः ॥२-७१-
The illustrious son of Ikṣvāku crossed the delightful, distant, opposite-banked, and backward-flowing, wave-laden Śatadrū river.
एल धाने नदीम् तीर्त्वा प्राप्य च अपर पर्पटान् । शिलाम् आकुर्वतीम् तीर्त्वाआग्नेयम् शल्य कर्तनम् ॥२-७१-
Having crossed the Ela-dhāna river and reached the other bank, he traversed the stone-laden path and the Agneyam, a place of arrow-cutting.
सत्य सम्धः शुचिः श्रीमान् प्रेक्षमाणः शिला वहाम् । अत्ययात् स महा शैलान् वनम् चैत्र रथम् प्रति ॥२-७१-
Truthful, pure, and illustrious, gazing at the stone-carrying hills, he passed over the great mountains toward the Caitra forest.
सरस्वतीम् च गङ्गाम् च उग्मेन प्रतिपद्य च । उत्तरम् वीरमत्स्यानाम् भारुण्डम् प्राविशद्वनम् ॥२-७१-
He reached the Sarasvatī and Gaṅgā rivers, and after crossing them with vigor, entered the northern Bhāruṇḍa forest of the heroic Matsyas.
वेगिनीम् च कुलिन्ग आख्याम् ह्रादिनीम् पर्वत आवृताम् । यमुनाम् प्राप्य सम्तीर्णो बलम् आश्वासयत् तदा ॥२-७१-
Arriving at the swift-flowing Yamunā, called Kulinga, resounding and surrounded by mountains, he crossed it and then reassured his army.
शीतीकृत्य तु गात्राणि क्लान्तान् आश्वास्य वाजिनः । तत्र स्नात्वा च पीत्वा च प्रायात् आदाय च उदकम् ॥२-७१-
Cooling their limbs and comforting the weary horses, they bathed and drank there, then departed, taking water with them.
राज पुत्रः महा अरण्यम् अनभीक्ष्ण उपसेवितम् । भद्रः भद्रेण यानेन मारुतः खम् इव अत्ययात् ॥२-७१-
The prince, through the vast forest seldom frequented, advanced nobly in a fine vehicle, like the wind moving through the sky.
