औपवाह्यस्य नागस्य विषाणम् शकलीकृतम् । सहसा चापि सम्शान्तम् ज्वलितम् जातवेदसम् ॥२-६९-
'The tusk of the royal elephant was shattered, and the blazing fire was suddenly extinguished.'
अवदीर्णाम् च पृथिवीम् शुष्कामः च विविधान् द्रुमान् । अहम् पश्यामि विध्वस्तान् सधूमामः चैव पार्वतान् ॥२-६९-
'I saw the earth split open, many trees dried up, and mountains scattered and smoking.'
पीठे कार्ष्णायसे च एनम् निषण्णम् कृष्ण वाससम् । प्रहसन्ति स्म राजानम् प्रमदाः कृष्ण पिन्गलाः ॥२-६९-
Seated on an iron throne, dressed in black garments, the king was laughed at by women with dark and tawny complexions.
त्वरमाणः च धर्म आत्मा रक्त माल्य अनुलेपनः । रथेन खर युक्तेन प्रयातः दक्षिणा मुखः ॥२-६९-
Hastening, righteous in nature, adorned with red garlands and ointments, he departed facing south in a chariot yoked with donkeys.
प्रहसन्तीव राजानम् प्रमदा रक्तवासिनी । प्रकर्षन्ती मया दृष्टा राक्षसी विकृतासना ॥२-६९-
It seemed as though a woman in red attire, a demoness with distorted posture, was dragging the king away, as I saw.
एवम् एतन् मया दृष्टम् इमाम् रात्रिम् भय आवहाम् । अहम् रामः अथ वा राजा लक्ष्मणो वा मरिष्यति ॥२-६९-
Thus I saw this terrifying night; either I, Rama, the king, or Lakshmana will die.
नरः यानेन यः स्वप्ने खर युक्तेन याति हि । अचिरात् तस्य धूम अग्रम् चितायाम् सम्प्रदृश्यते ॥२-६९-
A man who, in a dream, travels in a vehicle drawn by donkeys soon sees the tip of smoke on the funeral pyre.
एतन् निमित्तम् दीनो अहम् तन् न वः प्रतिपूजये । शुष्यति इव च मे कण्ठो न स्वस्थम् इव मे मनः ॥२-६९-
Because of this omen, I am distressed and do not honor you; my throat feels parched and my mind is not at ease.
न पश्यामि भयस्थानम् भयम् चैवोपधारये । भ्रष्टश्च स्वरयोगो मे चाया चोपहता मम ॥२-६९-
I do not see any cause for fear, yet I perceive fear; my voice has lost its resonance and my shadow is diminished.
जुगुप्सन्न् इव च आत्मानम् न च पश्यामि कारणम् । इमाम् हि दुह्स्वप्न गतिम् निशाम्य ताम् । अनेक रूपाम् अवितर्किताम् पुरा । भयम् महत् तद्द् हृदयान् न याति मे । विचिन्त्य राजानम् अचिन्त्य दर्शनम् ॥२-६९-
As if feeling disgust toward myself, though I see no reason; hearing of this ill-omened dream, with its many forms and unforeseen course, great fear does not leave my heart, pondering the king's incomprehensible appearance.

The seventieth chapter is to be heard. In the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Ayodhyā section, the seventieth chapter.
भरते ब्रुवति स्वप्नम् दूताः ते क्लान्त वाहनाः । प्रविश्य असह्य परिखम् रम्यम् राज गृहम् पुरम् ॥२-७०-
While Bharata was describing his dream, the messengers, their horses weary, entered the splendid royal palace and city, crossing the impassable moat.
समागम्य तु राज्ञा च राज पुत्रेण च अर्चिताः । राज्ञः पादौ गृहीत्वा तु तम् ऊचुर् भरतम् वचः ॥२-७०-
Having met the king and his son and been honored, they took hold of the king's feet and spoke these words to Bharata.
पुरोहितः त्वा कुशलम् प्राह सर्वे च मन्त्रिणः । त्वरमाणः च निर्याहि कृत्यम् आत्ययिकम् त्वया ॥२-७०-
The priest has conveyed his well-wishes to you, as have all the ministers; depart quickly, for urgent duty awaits you.
इमानि च महार्हाणि वस्त्राण्Yआभरणानि च । प्रतिगृह्य विशालाक्ष मातुलस्य च दापय ॥२-७०-
Receive these precious garments and ornaments, O wide-eyed one, and give them to your maternal uncle.
अत्र विम्शति कोट्यः तु नृपतेर् मातुलस्य ते । दश कोट्यः तु सम्पूर्णाः तथैव च नृप आत्मज ॥२-७०-
Here are twenty crores from the king for your maternal uncle, and ten crores for you, the king's son.
प्रतिगृह्य च तत् सर्वम् स्वनुरक्तः सुहृज् जने । दूतान् उवाच भरतः कामैः सम्प्रतिपूज्य तान् ॥२-७०-
Having accepted all this, Bharata, affectionate toward his friends, addressed the messengers, honoring them with his wishes.
कच्चित् सुकुशली राजा पिता दशरथो मम । कच्चिच् च अरागता रामे लक्ष्मणे वा महात्मनि ॥२-७०-
Is my father, King Dasharatha, well? Has any harm befallen Rama or the great-souled Lakshmana?
आर्या च धर्म निरता धर्मज्ञा धर्म दर्शिनी । अरोगा च अपि कौसल्या माता रामस्य धीमतः ॥२-७०-
Is noble Kausalya, devoted to righteousness, wise in dharma and a perceiver of dharma, free from illness, the mother of wise Rama?
कच्चित् सुमित्रा धर्मज्ञा जननी लक्ष्मणस्य या । शत्रुघ्नस्य च वीरस्य सारोगा च अपि मध्यमा ॥२-७०-
Is Sumitra, knowledgeable in dharma, the mother of Lakshmana and the heroic Shatrughna, the middle one, also free from illness?
आत्म कामा सदा चण्डी क्रोधना प्राज्ञ मानिनी । अरोगा च अपि कैकेयी माता मे किम् उवाच ह ॥२-७०-
My mother Kaikeyi, ever self-willed, fierce, quick to anger, wise, and proud, and even in good health—what did she say to me?
एवम् उक्ताः तु ते दूता भरतेन महात्मना । ऊचुः सम्प्रश्रितम् वाक्यम् इदम् तम् भरतम् तदा ॥२-७०-
Thus addressed by the noble Bharata, those messengers spoke these respectful words to him at that time.
कुशलाः ते नर व्याघ्र येषाम् कुशलम् इच्चसि । श्रीश्च त्वाम् वृणुते पद्मा युज्यताम् चापि ते रकः ॥२-७०-
O tiger among men, those for whom you wish well are well; fortune and the lotus goddess choose you, and may your protection be secured.
भरतः च अपि तान् दूतान् एवम् उक्तः अभ्यभाषत । आपृच्चे अहम् महा राजम् दूताः सम्त्वरयन्ति माम् ॥२-७०-
Bharata, thus spoken to by the messengers, replied: 'I will take leave of the great king; the messengers urge me to hurry.'
एवम् उक्त्वा तु तान् दूतान् भरतः पार्थिव आत्मजः । दूतैः सम्चोदितः वाक्यम् मातामहम् उवाच ह ॥२-७०-
Having thus spoken to the messengers, Bharata, son of the king, prompted by their words, addressed his maternal grandfather.
राजन् पितुर् गमिष्यामि सकाशम् दूत चोदितः । पुनर् अपि अहम् एष्यामि यदा मे त्वम् स्मरिष्यसि ॥२-७०-
'O King, urged by the messengers, I will go to my father's presence; I will return again whenever you remember me.'
भरतेन एवम् उक्तः तु नृपो मातामहः तदा । तम् उवाच शुभम् वाक्यम् शिरस्य् आघ्राय राघवम् ॥२-७०-
Then, addressed thus by Bharata, the king, his maternal grandfather, spoke auspicious words to him, embracing Raghava's head.
गच्च तात अनुजाने त्वाम् कैकेयी सुप्रजाः त्वया । मातरम् कुशलम् ब्रूयाः पितरम् च परम् तप ॥२-७०-
'Go, dear child, I permit you; Kaikeyi is blessed with a son like you. Convey my well-wishes to your mother and your father, the supreme ascetic.'
पुरोहितम् च कुशलम् ये च अन्ये द्विज सत्तमाः । तौ च तात महा इष्वासौ भ्रातरु राम लक्ष्मणौ ॥२-७०-
'Also greet the priest, and all other excellent twice-born men; and, dear child, those two mighty archers, your brothers Rama and Lakshmana.'
तस्मै हस्ति उत्तमामः चित्रान् कम्बलान् अजिनानि च । अभिसत्कृत्य कैकेयो भरताय धनम् ददौ ॥२-७०-
To him, the Kaikeyan, after honoring Bharata, gave the best elephant, fine blankets, and skins, as wealth.
