Seeing Brāhmaṇas who drank water with cupped hands and were learned in the Vedas, they passed through the land of Bāhlīka and the mountain called Sudāmāna.
Beholding the abode of Vishnu, and also the Vipāśā and Śālmālī rivers, they saw rivers, ponds, lakes, marshes, and pools.
Observing various lions, tigers, deer, and elephants, they proceeded along the great road, eager to fulfill their master's command.
Those messengers, their vehicles exhausted from the long journey, swiftly reached the best city, the mountain settlement, without delay.
For the sake of their master's pleasure, for the protection of the family, and for the preservation of their master's lineage, the messengers, undeterred and hurrying, arrived at that city during the night.

Hear now the sixty-ninth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
On that very night when the messengers entered the city, Bharata too saw this unpleasant dream.
When that night had passed and he recalled that troubling dream, the son of the great king was deeply distressed.
Noticing his distress, his dear friends, wishing to relieve his sorrow, began to tell stories in the assembly.
Some played music to soothe him, others danced, and yet others performed various plays and comedies.
But the noble Bharata, though surrounded by friends speaking kindly and making jokes, did not find joy.
One dear friend, seated among the companions, said to Bharata, 'Why, my friend, do you not take pleasure?'
To that friend who spoke thus, Bharata replied, 'Listen to the reason for this sadness that has come upon me.'
'In a dream I saw my father, unkempt, with loosened hair, falling from a mountain peak into a muddy, filthy pool.'
'I also saw him floating in that filthy pool, repeatedly drinking oil with his hands, as if laughing again and again.'
'Then, after eating rice balls made of sesame, his head hanging down, his whole body smeared with oil, he immersed himself in oil again and again.'
'In my dream I saw the ocean dried up, the moon fallen to the earth, and the blazing fire suddenly extinguished.'

'I saw the earth split open, many trees dried up, and mountains scattered and smoking.'
Seated on an iron throne, dressed in black garments, the king was laughed at by women with dark and tawny complexions.
Hastening, righteous in nature, adorned with red garlands and ointments, he departed facing south in a chariot yoked with donkeys.
It seemed as though a woman in red attire, a demoness with distorted posture, was dragging the king away, as I saw.
Thus I saw this terrifying night; either I, Rama, the king, or Lakshmana will die.
A man who, in a dream, travels in a vehicle drawn by donkeys soon sees the tip of smoke on the funeral pyre.
Because of this omen, I am distressed and do not honor you; my throat feels parched and my mind is not at ease.
I do not see any cause for fear, yet I perceive fear; my voice has lost its resonance and my shadow is diminished.
As if feeling disgust toward myself, though I see no reason; hearing of this ill-omened dream, with its many forms and unforeseen course, great fear does not leave my heart, pondering the king's incomprehensible appearance.
