न अराजके जनपदे महायज्ञेषु यज्वनः । ब्राह्मणा वसुसम्पन्ना विसृजन्त्याप्तदक्षिणाः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, at great sacrifices, wealthy brahmins do not distribute abundant gifts to worthy recipients.
न अराजके जन पदे प्रभूत नट नर्तकाः । उत्सवाः च समाजाः च वर्धन्ते राष्ट्र वर्धनाः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, numerous actors and dancers are not seen, nor do festivals and gatherings that bring prosperity flourish.
न अरजके जन पदे सिद्ध अर्था व्यवहारिणः । कथाभिर् अनुरज्यन्ते कथा शीलाः कथा प्रियैः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, those engaged in business do not achieve their aims, nor do those fond of stories delight in pleasant tales.
न अराजके जनपदे उद्यानानि समागताः । सायाह्ने क्रीडितुम् यान्ति कुमार्यो हेमभूषिताः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, adorned maidens do not gather in gardens to play in the evening.
न अराजके जन पदे वाहनैः शीघ्र गामिभिः । नरा निर्यान्ति अरण्यानि नारीभिः सह कामिनः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, men do not go out to the forests with swift vehicles, accompanied by their beloved women.
न अराकजे जन पदे धनवन्तः सुरक्षिताः । शेरते विवृत द्वाराः कृषि गो रक्ष जीविनः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, the wealthy and those who live by farming or cattle-keeping do not sleep safely with their doors open.
न अराजके जनपदे बद्दघण्टा विषाणीनः । आटन्ति राजमार्गेषु कुञ्जराः षष्टिहायनाः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, elephants with bells and ornaments do not walk the royal roads at sixty years of age.
न अराजके जनपदे शरान् सम्ततमस्यताम् । श्रूयते तलनिर्घोष इष्वस्त्राणामुपासने ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, the continuous twang of bowstrings is not heard, nor the sound of arrows being released in the training grounds.
न अराजके जन पदे वणिजो दूर गामिनः । गच्चन्ति क्षेमम् अध्वानम् बहु पुण्य समाचिताः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, merchants who travel far do not journey safely along the road, even if they have accumulated much merit.
न अराजके जन पदे चरति एक चरः वशी । भावयन्न् आत्मना आत्मानम् यत्र सायम् गृहो मुनिः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, even a solitary ascetic does not walk freely, contemplating himself, nor does the sage return home at dusk.
न अराजके जन पदे योग क्षेमम् प्रवर्तते । न च अपि अराजके सेना शत्रून् विषहते युधि ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, security and welfare do not prevail, nor does an army withstand enemies in battle.
न अराजके जनपदे हृष्टैः परमवाजिभिः । नराः सम्यान्ति सहसा रथैश्च परिमण्डिताः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, men do not swiftly assemble, adorned with splendid horses and chariots.
न अराजके जनपदे नराः शास्त्रविशारदाः । सम्पदन्तोऽवतिष्ठन्ते वनेषूपवनेषु च ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, men skilled in the scriptures do not remain prosperous, whether in forests or groves.
न अराजके जनपदे माल्यमोदकदक्षिणाः । देवताभ्यर्चनार्थय कल्प्यन्ते नियतैर्जनैः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, garlands, sweets, and offerings are not prepared by disciplined people for worship of the gods.
न अराजके जनपदे चन्दनागुरुरूषिताः । राजपुत्रा विराजन्ते वसन्त इव शाखिनः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, royal princes do not shine, adorned with sandalwood, aloe, and perfumes, like trees in spring.
यथा हि अनुदका नद्यो यथा वा अपि अतृणम् वनम् । अगोपाला यथा गावः तथा राष्ट्रम् अराजकम् ॥२-६७-
Just as rivers without water, forests without grass, and cows without herdsmen, so is a kingdom without a king.
ध्वजो रथस्य प्रज्ञानम् धूमो ज्ञानम् विभावसोः । तेषाम् यो नो ध्वजो राज स देवत्वमितो गतः ॥२-६७-
The banner is the sign of the chariot, smoke is the sign of fire; among them, the king is our banner, who has attained divinity from here.
न अराजके जन पदे स्वकम् भवति कस्यचित् । मत्स्याइव नरा नित्यम् भक्षयन्ति परस्परम् ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, nothing belongs to anyone; just as fish, men constantly devour one another.
येहि सम्भिन्न मर्यादा नास्तिकाः चिन्न सम्शयाः । ते अपि भावाय कल्पन्ते राज दण्ड निपीडिताः ॥२-६७-
Those who have broken boundaries, who are atheists, who are full of doubts—even they are brought to order when oppressed by the king's punishment.
यथा दृष्टिः शरीरस्य नित्यमेवप्रवर्तते । तथा नरेन्द्रो राष्ट्रस्य प्रभवः सत्यधर्मयोः ॥२-६७-
Just as sight always operates for the body, so the king is the source of truth and righteousness for the kingdom.
राजा सत्यम् च धर्मश्च राजा कुलवताम् कुलम् । राजा माता पिता चैव राजा हितकरो नृणाम् ॥२-६७-
The king is truth and righteousness; the king is the lineage of the noble; the king is both mother and father; the king is the benefactor of men.
यमो वैश्रवणः शक्रो वरुणश्च महाबलः । विशेष्यन्ते नरेन्द्रेण वृत्तेन महाता ततः ॥२-६७-
Yama, Kubera, Indra, and mighty Varuna are surpassed by the noble king through his great conduct.
अहो तमैव इदम् स्यान् न प्रज्ञायेत किम्चन । राजा चेन् न भवेन् लोके विभजन् साध्व् असाधुनी ॥२-६७-
Indeed, this world would be utter darkness, and nothing would be known, if there were no king to distinguish the good from the bad.
जीवति अपि महा राजे तव एव वचनम् वयम् । न अतिक्रमामहे सर्वे वेलाम् प्राप्य इव सागरः ॥२-६७-
While the great king lives, we all follow only your command, just as the ocean stays within its bounds.
स नः समीक्ष्य द्विज वर्य वृत्तम् । नृपम् विना राज्यम् अरण्य भूतम् । कुमारम् इक्ष्वाकु सुतम् वदान्यम् । त्वम् एव राजानम् इह अभिषिन्चय ॥२-६७-
Therefore, O best of twice-born, seeing our conduct, this kingdom is like a wilderness without a king; the generous prince, son of Ikshvaku, should be crowned by you as king here.

Let the sixty-eighth chapter be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Ayodhyā section.
तेषाम् तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा वसिष्ठः प्रत्युवाच ह । मित्र अमात्य गणान् सर्वान् ब्राह्मणाम्स् तान् इदम् वचः ॥२-६८-
Hearing those words, Vasiṣṭha addressed all the friends, ministers, and those Brāhmaṇas, saying this:
यद् असौ मातुल कुले पुरे राज गृहे सुखी । भरतः वसति भ्रात्रा शत्रुघ्नेन समन्वितः ॥२-६८-
Since Bharata is now living happily in his maternal uncle's city, in the royal palace, together with his brother Śatrughna,
तत् शीघ्रम् जवना दूता गच्चन्तु त्वरितैः हयैः । आनेतुम् भ्रातरौ वीरौ किम् समीक्षामहे वयम् ॥२-६८-
Let swift messengers go quickly, with fast horses, to bring back those two heroic brothers—why should we delay?
गच्चन्तु इति ततः सर्वे वसिष्ठम् वाक्यम् अब्रुवन् । तेषाम् तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा वसिष्ठो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-६८-
Then all of them said to Vasiṣṭha, 'Let them go.' Hearing their words, Vasiṣṭha spoke again:
