निशा नक्षत्र हीना इव स्त्री इव भर्तृ विवर्जिता । पुरी न अराजत अयोध्या हीना राज्ञा महात्मना ॥२-६६-
Like a night without stars, like a woman bereft of her husband, Ayodhya, deprived of its great king, did not shine.
बाष्प पर्याकुल जना हाहा भूत कुल अन्गना । शून्य चत्वर वेश्म अन्ता न बभ्राज यथा पुरम् ॥२-६६-
With people overwhelmed by tears, with families' women crying 'alas!', with empty squares and houses, the city did not gleam as before.
गत प्रभा द्यौर् इव भास्करम् विना । व्यपेत नक्षत्र गणा इव शर्वरी । निवृत्तचारः सहसा गतो रविः । प्रवृत्तचारा राजनी ह्युपस्थिता ॥२-६६-
Like the sky without the sun, like the night without its cluster of stars, when the sun suddenly sets and day ceases, night comes forth.
ऋते तु पुत्राद्दहनम् महीपते । र्नरोचयन्ते सुहृदः समागताः । इतीव तस्मिन् शयने न्यवेशय । न्विचिन्त्य राजानमचिन्त्य दर्शनम् ॥२-६६-
Except for the king's son, the gathered friends did not consent to cremation; thus, they placed the king on the bed, pondering his unfathomable presence.
गतप्रभा द्यौरिव भास्करम् विना । व्यपेतनक्षत्रगणेव शर्वरी । पुरी बभासे रहिता मह आत्मना । न च अस्र कण्ठ आकुल मार्ग चत्वरा ॥२-६६-
Like the sky without the sun, like the night without its cluster of stars, the city appeared bereft of its great soul, and the streets and squares were not crowded with tearful throats.
नराः च नार्यः च समेत्य सम्घशो । विगर्हमाणा भरतस्य मातरम् । तदा नगर्याम् नर देव सम्क्षये । बभूवुर् आर्ता न च शर्म लेभिरे ॥२-६६-
Men and women gathered in groups, reproaching Bharata's mother; in the city, with the king gone, they were distressed and found no comfort.

This is the sixty-seventh chapter in the Ayodhyākāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
आक्रन्दितनिरानन्दा सास्रकम्ठजनाविला । आयोध्यायामतितता सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥२-६७-
Ayodhya, filled with cries, joyless, its people choked with tears, passed through that night.
व्यतीतायाम् तु शर्वर्याम् आदित्यस्य उदये ततः । समेत्य राज कर्तारः सभाम् ईयुर् द्विजातयः ॥२-६७-
When the night had passed and the sun rose, the royal priests and twice-born men assembled and went to the council.
मार्कण्डेयो अथ मौद्गल्यो वामदेवः च काश्यपः । कात्ययनो गौतमः च जाबालिः च महा यशाः ॥२-६७-
Markandeya, Maudgalya, Vamadeva, Kashyapa, Katyayana, Gautama, and the illustrious Jabali were present.
एते द्विजाः सह अमात्यैः पृथग् वाचम् उदीरयन् । वसिष्ठम् एव अभिमुखाः श्रेष्ठः राज पुरोहितम् ॥२-६७-
These brahmins, together with the ministers, each speaking separately, all turned toward Vasiṣṭha, the foremost royal priest.
अतीता शर्वरी दुह्खम् या नो वर्ष शत उपमा । अस्मिन् पन्चत्वम् आपन्ने पुत्र शोकेन पार्थिवे ॥२-६७-
This night, which seemed as long as a hundred years, has passed for us in sorrow, since the king met his end, overcome by grief for his son.
स्वर् गतः च महा राजो रामः च अरण्यम् आश्रितः । लक्ष्मणः च अपि तेजस्वी रामेण एव गतः सह ॥२-६७-
The great king has gone to heaven, Rāma has taken refuge in the forest, and the mighty Lakṣmaṇa has gone with Rāma as well.
उभौ भरत शत्रुघ्नौ क्केकयेषु परम् तपौ । पुरे राज गृहे रम्ये मातामह निवेशने ॥२-६७-
Both Bharata and Śatrughna, great ascetics, are in Kekaya, in the delightful royal palace of their maternal grandfather.
इक्ष्वाकूणाम् इह अद्य एव कश्चित् राजा विधीयताम् । अराजकम् हि नो राष्ट्रम् न विनाशम् अवाप्नुयात् ॥२-६७-
Let someone from the Ikṣvāku line be made king here today, for our kingdom, without a ruler, must not come to ruin.
न अराजले जन पदे विद्युन् माली महा स्वनः । अभिवर्षति पर्जन्यो महीम् दिव्येन वारिणा ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, the thundercloud, though resounding greatly, does not rain down heavenly water upon the earth.
न अराजके जन पदे बीज मुष्टिः प्रकीर्यते । न अराकके पितुः पुत्रः भार्या वा वर्तते वशे ॥२-६७-

In a land without a king, there is no wealth, nor even a wife; and where there is such disorder, how can truth exist?
न अराजके जन पदे कारयन्ति सभाम् नराः । उद्यानानि च रम्याणि हृष्टाः पुण्य गृहाणि च ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, men do not build assembly halls, nor do the joyful construct lovely gardens or sacred homes.
न अराजके जन पदे यज्ञ शीला द्विजातयः । सत्राणि अन्वासते दान्ता ब्राह्मणाः सम्शित व्रताः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, twice-born men devoted to sacrifice, self-controlled and firm in their vows, do not perform sacrificial rites.
न अराजके जनपदे महायज्ञेषु यज्वनः । ब्राह्मणा वसुसम्पन्ना विसृजन्त्याप्तदक्षिणाः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, at great sacrifices, wealthy brahmins do not distribute abundant gifts to worthy recipients.
न अराजके जन पदे प्रभूत नट नर्तकाः । उत्सवाः च समाजाः च वर्धन्ते राष्ट्र वर्धनाः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, numerous actors and dancers are not seen, nor do festivals and gatherings that bring prosperity flourish.
न अरजके जन पदे सिद्ध अर्था व्यवहारिणः । कथाभिर् अनुरज्यन्ते कथा शीलाः कथा प्रियैः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, those engaged in business do not achieve their aims, nor do those fond of stories delight in pleasant tales.
न अराजके जनपदे उद्यानानि समागताः । सायाह्ने क्रीडितुम् यान्ति कुमार्यो हेमभूषिताः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, adorned maidens do not gather in gardens to play in the evening.
न अराजके जन पदे वाहनैः शीघ्र गामिभिः । नरा निर्यान्ति अरण्यानि नारीभिः सह कामिनः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, men do not go out to the forests with swift vehicles, accompanied by their beloved women.
न अराकजे जन पदे धनवन्तः सुरक्षिताः । शेरते विवृत द्वाराः कृषि गो रक्ष जीविनः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, the wealthy and those who live by farming or cattle-keeping do not sleep safely with their doors open.
न अराजके जनपदे बद्दघण्टा विषाणीनः । आटन्ति राजमार्गेषु कुञ्जराः षष्टिहायनाः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, elephants with bells and ornaments do not walk the royal roads at sixty years of age.
न अराजके जनपदे शरान् सम्ततमस्यताम् । श्रूयते तलनिर्घोष इष्वस्त्राणामुपासने ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, the continuous twang of bowstrings is not heard, nor the sound of arrows being released in the training grounds.
न अराजके जन पदे वणिजो दूर गामिनः । गच्चन्ति क्षेमम् अध्वानम् बहु पुण्य समाचिताः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, merchants who travel far do not journey safely along the road, even if they have accumulated much merit.
न अराजके जन पदे चरति एक चरः वशी । भावयन्न् आत्मना आत्मानम् यत्र सायम् गृहो मुनिः ॥२-६७-
In a land without a king, even a solitary ascetic does not walk freely, contemplating himself, nor does the sage return home at dusk.
