चित्तनाशाद्विपद्यन्ते सर्वाण्येवेन्द्रियाणि मे । क्षिणस्नेहस्य दीपस्य सम्सक्ता रश्मयो यथा ॥२-६४-
With the loss of mental clarity, all my senses fail, just as the rays of a lamp grow faint when its oil is exhausted.
अयम् आत्म भवः शोको माम् अनाथम् अचेतनम् । सम्सादयति वेगेन यथा कूलम् नदी रयः ॥२-६४-
This grief, arising from my own heart, overwhelms me, helpless and insensible, like a river's current striking its bank.
हा राघव महा बाहो हा मम आयास नाशन । हा पितृप्रिय मे नाथ हाद्य क्वासि गतः सुत ॥२-६४-
Alas, Raghava of mighty arms! Alas, destroyer of my toil! Alas, beloved of your father, my protector! Alas, son, where have you gone now?
हा कौसल्ये नशिष्यामि हा सुमित्रे तपस्विनि । हा नृशम्से ममामित्रे कैकेयि कुलपाम्सनि ॥२-६४-
Alas, Kausalya, I am perishing! Alas, Sumitra, you who are devoted to austerity! Alas, Kaikeyi, my cruel enemy, stain upon our lineage!
इति रामस्य मातुश्च सुमित्रायाश्च सन्निधौ । राजा दशरथः शोचन् जीवित अन्तम् उपागमत् ॥२-६४-
Thus, in the presence of Rama's mother and Sumitra, King Dasaratha, lamenting, reached the end of his life.
यथा तु दीनम् कथयन् नर अधिपः । प्रियस्य पुत्रस्य विवासन आतुरः । गते अर्ध रात्रे भृश दुह्ख पीडितः । तदा जहौ प्राणम् उदार दर्शनः ॥२-६४-
As the lord of men spoke in distress, tormented by the exile of his beloved son, in the middle of the night, deeply afflicted, that noble-souled one gave up his life.

अथ रात्र्याम् व्यतीतायाम् प्रातर् एव अपरे अहनि । वन्दिनः पर्युपातिष्ठम्स् तत् पार्थिव निवेशनम् ॥२-६५-
When the night had passed and the next morning arrived, the bards assembled at the royal residence.
सूताः परमसम्स्काराः मङ्गLआश्चोओत्तमश्रुताः । गायकाः स्तुतिशीलाश्च निगदन्तः पृथक् पृथक्॥२-६५-
Charioteers, highly refined and well-versed in auspicious songs, singers skilled in praise, each spoke separately.
राजानम् स्तुताम् तेषामुदात्ताभिहिताशिषाम् । प्रासादाभोगविस्तीर्णः स्तुतिशब्दो ह्यवर्तत ॥२-६५-
The sound of their praises, uttered with lofty blessings for the king, spread throughout the vast palace.
ततस्तु स्तुवताम् तेषाम् सूतानाम् पाणिवादकाः । अवदानान्युदाहृत्य पाणिवादा नवादयन् ॥२-६५-
Then, as they sang, the charioteers who played instruments performed their pieces, and the musicians began to play.
तेन शब्देन विहगाः प्रतिबुद्धा विसस्वनुः । शाखास्थाः पञ्जरस्थाश्च ये राजकुलगोचराः ॥२-६५-
Awakened by that sound, the birds—those perched on branches and those in cages within the royal household—began to sing.
व्याहृताः पुण्य्शब्दाश्च वीणानाम् चापि निस्स्वनाः । आशीर्गेयम् च गाथानाम् पूरयामास वेश्म तत ॥२-६५-
The auspicious sounds of the veenas and the recitation of blessings and songs filled the palace.
ततः शुचि समाचाराः पर्युपस्थान कोविदः । स्त्री वर्ष वर भूयिष्ठाउपतस्थुर् यथा पुरम् ॥२-६५-
Then, women of pure conduct, skilled in attendance, mostly young and beautiful, gathered as they had before.
हरि चन्दन सम्पृक्तम् उदकम् कान्चनैः घटैः । आनिन्युः स्नान शिक्षा आज्ञा यथा कालम् यथा विधि ॥२-६५-
They brought water mixed with sandalwood and saffron in golden vessels, for bathing, as instructed, at the proper time and according to custom.
मन्गल आलम्भनीयानि प्राशनीयान् उपस्करान् । उपनिन्युस् तथा अपि अन्याः कुमारी बहुलाः स्त्रियः ॥२-६५-
Other young women also brought auspicious items for offering and utensils for drinking, as required.
सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्नम् सर्वम् विधिवदर्चितम् । सर्वम् सुगुणलक्स्मीवत्तद्भभूवाभिहारिकम् ॥२-६५-
He was endowed with all auspicious marks, everything was duly honored, and all was adorned with excellent virtues and prosperity, appearing most fitting for a king.
ततः सूर्योदयम् यावत्सर्वम् परिसमुत्सुकम् । तस्थावनुपसम्प्राप्तम् किम् स्विदित्युपश् ॥२-६५-
Then, until sunrise, everyone waited anxiously, wondering what might have happened, as nothing had yet occurred.
अथ याः कोसल इन्द्रस्य शयनम् प्रत्यनन्तराः । ताः स्त्रियः तु समागम्य भर्तारम् प्रत्यबोधयन् ॥२-६५-
Then, the women of Kosala who slept near the king's chamber gathered together and tried to awaken their lord.
तथाप्युचितवृत्तास्ता विनयेन नयेन च । न ह्यस्य शयनम् स्पृष्ट्वा किम् चिदप्युपलेभिरे ॥२-६५-
Yet, behaving as was proper, with modesty and decorum, they did not touch his bed or disturb him in any way.
ताः स्त्रीयः स्वप्नशीलज्ञास्चेष्टासम्चलनादिषु । ता वेपथु परीताः च राज्ञः प्राणेषु शन्किताः ॥२-६५-
Those women, skilled in knowing the habits of sleep and movements, became seized with trembling, fearing for the king's life.
प्रतिस्रोतः तृण अग्राणाम् सदृशम् सम्चकम्पिरे । अथ सम्वेपमनानाम् स्त्रीणाम् दृष्ट्वा च पार्थिवम् ॥२-६५-
Like blades of grass at the edge of a stream quivering against the current, so did those women tremble; and seeing the king, they shook even more.
यत् तत् आशन्कितम् पापम् तस्य जज्ञे विनिश्चयः । कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च पुत्रशोकपराजिते ॥२-६५-
What they had feared as a calamity was now certain; and Kausalya and Sumitra, overcome by grief for their son—
प्रसुप्ते न प्रबुध्येते यथा कालसमन्विते । निष्प्रभा च विवर्णा च सन्ना शोकेन सन्नता ॥२-६५-
Though asleep, they did not awaken at the proper time; drained of radiance, pale, and bowed down, they were overcome by sorrow.
न व्यराजत कौसल्या तारेव तिमिरावृता । कौसल्यानन्तरम् राज्ञः सुमित्रा तदन्तनरम् ॥२-६५-
Kausalya did not shine, like a star veiled by darkness; after Kausalya, the king's wife Sumitra also appeared the same.
न स्म विभ्राजते देवी शोकाश्रुलुलितानना । ते च दृष्ट्वा तथा सुप्ते शुभे देव्यौ च तम् नृपम् ॥२-६५-
The queen, her face stained with tears of grief, no longer shone; seeing the king and those noble queens lying thus—
सुप्तमे वोद्गतप्राणमन्तः पुरमन्यत । ततः प्रचुक्रुशुर् दीनाः सस्वरम् ता वर अन्गनाः ॥२-६५-
The inner palace, with its lord lying lifeless in sleep, seemed changed; then those noble women, stricken, cried out loudly.
करेणवैव अरण्ये स्थान प्रच्युत यूथपाः । तासाम् आक्रन्द शब्देन सहसा उद्गत चेतने ॥२-६५-
Like female elephants whose leader has fallen in the forest, those women, suddenly regaining consciousness, wailed aloud.
कौसल्या च सुमित्राच त्यक्त निद्रे बभूवतुः । कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च दृष्ट्वा स्पृष्ट्वा च पार्थिवम् ॥२-६५-
Kausalya and Sumitra, abandoning sleep, arose; and seeing and touching the king—
हा नाथ इति परिक्रुश्य पेततुर् धरणी तले । सा कोसल इन्द्र दुहिता वेष्टमाना मही तले ॥२-६५-
Crying out, 'Alas, lord!' they collapsed to the ground; the daughter of the king of Kosala writhed upon the earth.
