सो अहम् आम्र वणम् चित्त्वा पलाशामः च न्यषेचयम् । रामम् फल आगमे त्यक्त्वा पश्चात् शोचामि दुर्मतिः ॥२-६३-
So I, having cut down the mango grove and watered the palāśa trees, have abandoned Rama at the time of fruit, and now, foolish, I grieve.
लब्ध शब्देन कौसल्ये कुमारेण धनुष्मता । कुमारः शब्द वेधी इति मया पापम् इदम् कृतम् ॥२-६३-
Because of a sound, O Kausalya, by a prince bearing a bow, I committed this sin, thinking, 'He is a sound-shooter.'
तत् इदम् मे अनुसम्प्राप्तम् देवि दुह्खम् स्वयम् कृतम् । सम्मोहात् इह बालेन यथा स्यात् भक्षितम् विषम् ॥२-६३-
Therefore, O queen, this sorrow, self-caused, has come upon me; through confusion, as by a child, poison might be eaten here.
यथान्यः पुरुषः कश्चित्पलाशैर्मोओहितो भवेत् । एवम् मम अपि अविज्ञातम् शब्द वेध्यमयम् फलम् ॥२-६३-
Just as another man might be deluded by palāśa trees, so too, for me, the fruit of shooting by sound, unknown, has come.
देव्य् अनूढा त्वम् अभवो युव राजो भवाम्य् अहम् । ततः प्रावृड् अनुप्राप्ता मद काम विवर्धिनी ॥२-६३-
You were unmarried, O queen, and I became king; then the rainy season arrived, increasing my desires.
उपास्यहि रसान् भौमाम्स् तप्त्वा च जगद् अम्शुभिः । परेत आचरिताम् भीमाम् रविर् आविशते दिशम् ॥२-६३-
Having enjoyed the earthly delights, and heated the world with his rays, the sun enters another region, as if following the path of the dead.
उष्णम् अन्तर् दधे सद्यः स्निग्धा ददृशिरे घनाः । ततः जहृषिरे सर्वे भेक सारन्ग बर्हिणः ॥२-६३-
At once he held heat within, the clouds appeared glossy; then all the frogs, deer, and peacocks rejoiced.
क्लिन्नपक्षोत्तराः स्नाताः कृच्च्रादिव वतत्रिणः । वृष्टिवातावधूताग्रान् पादपानभिपेदिरे ॥२-६३-
With wings wet and uplifted, as if bathed with difficulty, the birds, shaken by rain and wind, flocked to the trees.
पतितेन अम्भसा चन्नः पतमानेन च असकृत् । आबभौ मत्त सारन्गः तोय राशिर् इव अचलः ॥२-६३-
Covered again and again by falling water, the intoxicated deer appeared like a mountain massed with water.
पाण्डुरारुणवर्णानि स्रोओताम्सि विमलान्यपि । सुस्रुवुर्गिरिधातुभ्यः सभस्मानि भुजङ्गवत् ॥२-६३-
Streams, though pure, flowed from the mountain slopes, white and red in color, streaked with ash, like serpents.
आकुलारुणतोयानि स्रोओताम्सि विमलान्यपि । उन्मार्गजलवाहीनि बभूवुर्जलदागमे ॥२-६३-
Even the pure streams, their waters reddened and agitated, began to overflow their banks and run off course with the coming of the rains.
तस्मिन्न् अतिसुखे काले धनुष्मान् इषुमान् रथी । व्यायाम कृत सम्कल्पः सरयूम् अन्वगाम् नदीम् ॥२-६३-
At that most pleasant time, armed with bow and arrows, intent on exercise, I drove my chariot along the Sarayu river.
निपाने महिषम् रात्रौ गजम् वा अभ्यागतम् नदीम् । अन्यम् वा श्वा पदम् कम्चिज् जिघाम्सुर् अजित इन्द्रियः ॥२-६३-
At the watering places, seeking to kill a buffalo or an elephant that had come to the river at night, or some other animal whose tracks I might find, I, with uncontrolled senses, lay in wait.
तस्मिम्स्तत्राहमेकान्ते रात्रौ विवृतकार्मुकः । तत्राहम् सम्वृतम् वन्यम् हतवाम्स्तीरमागतम् ॥२-६३-
There, alone at night, my bow drawn, I killed a wild creature that had come to the riverbank, concealed in the brush.
अन्यम् चापि मृगम् हिम्स्रम् शब्दम् श्रुत्वाभु पागतम् । अथ अन्ध कारे तु अश्रौषम् जले कुम्भस्य पर्यतः ॥२-६३-
Hearing the sound of another fierce animal approaching, I listened; then, in the darkness, I heard the noise of something moving in the water near a pot.
अचक्षुर् विषये घोषम् वारणस्य इव नर्दतः । ततः अहम् शरम् उद्धृत्य दीप्तम् आशी विष उपमम् ॥२-६३-
Within the range of hearing, I heard a sound like an elephant trumpeting; so I drew forth a sharp arrow, blazing like a serpent’s venom.
शब्दम् प्रति गजप्रेप्सुरभिलक्ष्य त्वपातयम् । अमुन्चम् निशितम् बाणम् अहम् आशी विष उपमम् ॥२-६३-
Aiming at the sound, desiring an elephant, I released that keen arrow, deadly as serpent’s poison.
तत्र वाग् उषसि व्यक्ता प्रादुर् आसीद् वन ओकसः । हा हा इति पततः तोये बाणाभिहतमर्मणः ॥२-६३-
Then, at dawn, a clear human voice arose from the forest, crying 'Alas, alas!' as one struck in the vital parts by an arrow fell into the water.
तस्मिन्निपतिते बाणे वागभूत्तत्र मानुषी । कथम् अस्मद् विधे शस्त्रम् निपतेत् तु तपस्विनि ॥२-६३-
When the arrow struck, a human voice was heard there: 'How could a weapon fall upon one like me, devoted to austerity?'
प्रविविक्ताम् नदीम् रात्राव् उदाहारः अहम् आगतः । इषुणा अभिहतः केन कस्य वा किम् कृतम् मया ॥२-६३-
'At night, I came to this secluded river to draw water; by whom have I been struck with an arrow? What wrong have I done to anyone?'
ऋषेर् हि न्यस्त दण्डस्य वने वन्येन जीवतः । कथम् नु शस्त्रेण वधो मद् विधस्य विधीयते ॥२-६३-
'How can one like me, a sage who has renounced violence and lives in the forest on wild food, be slain by a weapon?'
जटा भार धरस्य एव वल्कल अजिन वाससः । को वधेन मम अर्थी स्यात् किम् वा अस्य अपकृतम् मया ॥२-६३-
'Who would seek my death, burdened as I am with matted hair, clad in bark and skins? What harm have I done to him?'
एवम् निष्फलम् आरब्धम् केवल अनर्थ सम्हितम् । न कश्चित् साधु मन्येत यथैव गुरु तल्पगम् ॥२-६३-
'Such an act, fruitless and only bringing harm, would be condemned by all, just as one who approaches his teacher’s wife.'
नहम् तथा अनुशोचामि जीवित क्षयम् आत्मनः । मातरम् पितरम् च उभाव् अनुशोचामि मद् विधे ॥२-६३-
'I do not grieve so much for the loss of my own life, but for my mother and father, who are like me.'
तत् एतान् मिथुनम् वृद्धम् चिर कालभृतम् मया । मयि पन्चत्वम् आपन्ने काम् वृत्तिम् वर्तयिष्यति ॥२-६३-
'That aged couple, long supported by me—when I am gone, who will care for them?'
वृद्धौ च माता पितराव् अहम् च एक इषुणा हतः । केन स्म निहताः सर्वे सुबालेन अकृत आत्मना ॥२-६३-
'My aged mother and father, and I too, are all slain by a single arrow—by a mere boy, ignorant of himself.'
तम् गिरम् करुणाम् श्रुत्वा मम धर्म अनुकान्क्षिणः । कराभ्याम् सशरम् चापम् व्यथितस्य अपतत् भुवि ॥२-६३-
Hearing those pitiful words, my heart yearning for righteousness, my bow and arrow fell from my hands to the ground as I was overcome with anguish.
तस्याहम् करुणम् श्रुत्वा निशि लालपतो बहु । सम्भ्रानतः शोकवेगेन भृशमास विचेतनः ॥२-६३-
Hearing his sorrowful cries in the night, I, greatly agitated and overwhelmed by grief, became utterly distraught.
तम् देशम् अहम् आगम्य दीन सत्त्वः सुदुर्मनाः । अपश्यम् इषुणा तीरे सरय्वाः तापसम् हतम् ॥२-६३-
When I reached that place, my spirit broken and my mind deeply troubled, I saw the ascetic lying dead on the bank of the Sarayu, struck by an arrow.
अवकीर्णजटाभारम् प्रविद्धकलशोदकम् । पासुशोणितदिग्धाङ्गम् शयानम् शल्यपीडितम् ॥२-६३-
His matted hair was scattered, his water pot overturned and emptied, his body stained with blood, and he lay pierced and tormented by the shaft.
