सूत यद्य् अस्ति ते किम्चिन् मया अपि सुकृतम् कृतम् । त्वम् प्रापय आशु माम् रामम् प्राणाः सम्त्वरयन्ति माम् ॥२-५९-
Charioteer, if I have ever done any good for you, quickly take me to Rāma; my life is hurrying me on.
यद् यद् या अपि मम एव आज्ञा निवर्तयतु राघवम् । न शक्ष्यामि विना राम मुहूर्तम् अपि जीवितुम् ॥२-५९-
Whatever command I have, let it turn Rāghava back; I cannot live even for a moment without Rāma.
अथवा अपि महा बाहुर् गतः दूरम् भविष्यति । माम् एव रथम् आरोप्य शीघ्रम् रामाय दर्शय ॥२-५९-
Or if the mighty-armed one has already gone far, then place me on the chariot and swiftly show me to Rāma.
वृत्त दम्ष्ट्रः महा इष्वासः क्व असौ लक्ष्मण पूर्वजः । यदि जीवामि साध्व् एनम् पश्येयम् सह सीतया ॥२-५९-
Where is that elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa, with curved tusks and great bow? If I live, may I see him together with Sītā.
लोहित अक्षम् महा बाहुम् आमुक्त मणि कुण्डलम् । रामम् यदि न पश्यामि गमिष्यामि यम क्षयम् ॥२-५९-
If I do not see Rāma, with blood-red eyes, mighty arms, and gem-studded earrings, I will go to the abode of Yama.
अतः नु किम् दुह्खतरम् यो अहम् इक्ष्वाकु नन्दनम् । इमाम् अवस्थाम् आपन्नो न इह पश्यामि राघवम् ॥२-५९-
What could be more painful than this: that I, descended from Ikṣvāku, have come to this state and do not see Rāghava here?
हा राम राम अनुज हा हा वैदेहि तपस्विनी । न माम् जानीत दुह्खेन म्रियमाणम् अनाथवत् ॥२-५९-
Alas, Rāma! Rāma's younger brother! Alas, ascetic Vaidehī! You do not know that I am dying, abandoned by sorrow.
स तेन राजा दुःखेन भृशमर्पितचेतनः । अवगाढः सुदुष्पारम् शोकसागमब्रवीत् ॥२-५९-
Overwhelmed by intense grief, the king, his mind utterly afflicted, plunged into the ocean of sorrow, impossible to cross, and spoke.
रामशोकमहाभोगः सीताविरहपारगः । श्वसितोर्मिमहावर्तो बाष्पफेनजलाविलः ॥२-५९-
The ocean of sorrow, with Rāma's exile as its great depth, Sītā's separation as its far shore, sighs as its mighty waves, and tears as its foaming, turbid waters.
बाहुविक्षेपमीनौघो विक्रन्दितमहास्वनः । प्रकीर्णकेशशैवालः कैकेयीबडबामुखः ॥२-५९-
Its fish are the flailing of arms, its great roar is loud lamentation, its floating weeds are disheveled hair, and its submarine fire is Kaikeyī.
ममाश्रुवेगप्रभवः कुब्जावाक्यमहाग्रहः । वरवेलो नृशम्साया रामप्रव्राजनायतः ॥२-५९-
Fed by the flood of my tears, with the words of the hunchback as a great crocodile, with the cruel boon as its shore, and Rāma's exile as its expanse.
यस्मिन् बत निमग्नोऽहम् कौसल्ये राघवम् विना । दुस्तरः जीवता देवि मया अयम् शोक सागरः ॥२-५९-
In this, O Kausalyā, I am truly submerged, without Rāghava; for me, living, this ocean of sorrow is impossible to cross.
अशोभनम् यो अहम् इह अद्य राघवम् । दिदृक्षमाणो न लभे सलक्ष्मणम्इति इव राजा विलपन् महा यहाशःपपात तूर्णम् शयने स मूर्चितः ॥२-५९-
It is unseemly that I, wishing to see Rāghava with Lakṣmaṇa, do not find him here today—so lamenting, the great king suddenly fell unconscious on his couch.
इति विलपति पार्थिवे प्रनष्टे । करुणतरम् द्विगुणम् च राम हेतोः । वचनम् अनुनिशम्य तस्य देवी । भयम् अगमत् पुनर् एव राम माता ॥२-५९-
As the king lamented thus, overwhelmed by grief for Rāma, the queen, Rāma's mother, hearing his words, was seized again by deep fear.

Thus ends the sixtieth sarga in the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
ततः भूत उपसृष्टा इव वेपमाना पुनः पुनः । धरण्याम् गत सत्त्वा इव कौसल्या सूतम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-६०-
Then Kausalyā, trembling again and again as if possessed by spirits, and as if her life had left her, spoke to the charioteer.
नय माम् यत्र काकुत्स्थः सीता यत्र च लक्ष्मणः । तान् विना क्षणम् अपि अत्र जीवितुम् न उत्सहे हि अहम् ॥२-६०-
Take me to where Kakutstha is, where Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa are; without them, I cannot endure to live here even for a moment.
निवर्तय रथम् शीघ्रम् दण्डकान् नय माम् अपि । अथ तान् न अनुगच्चामि गमिष्यामि यम क्षयम् ॥२-६०-
Turn the chariot back quickly; take me to Daṇḍaka forest as well. If I do not follow them, I will go to the abode of Yama.
बाष्प वेगौपहतया स वाचा सज्जमानया । इदम् आश्वासयन् देवीम् सूतः प्रान्जलिर् अब्रवीत् ॥२-६०-
With his voice choked by the force of tears, the charioteer, hands joined, comforted the queen with these words.
त्यज शोकम् च मोहम् च सम्भ्रमम् दुह्खजम् तथा । व्यवधूय च सम्तापम् वने वत्स्यति राघवः ॥२-६०-
Abandon grief and delusion, and also the distress born of sorrow; setting aside your anguish, know that Rāghava will dwell in the forest.
लक्ष्मणः च अपि रामस्य पादौ परिचरन् वने । आराधयति धर्मज्ञः पर लोकम् जित इन्द्रियः ॥२-६०-
Lakṣmaṇa too, serving Rāma’s feet in the forest, devoted to righteousness and self-controlled, worships him as one would a higher world.
विजने अपि वने सीता वासम् प्राप्य गृहेष्व् इव । विस्रम्भम् लभते अभीता रामे सम्न्यस्त मानसा ॥२-६०-
Even in the lonely forest, Sītā, having found her dwelling, feels as secure as if in her own home, fearless, her mind entrusted to Rāma.
न अस्या दैन्यम् कृतम् किम्चित् सुसूक्ष्मम् अपि लक्षये । उचिता इव प्रवासानाम् वैदेही प्रतिभाति मा ॥२-६०-
I do not perceive even the slightest trace of dejection in her; Vaidehī seems well suited to exile, O Queen.
नगर उपवनम् गत्वा यथा स्म रमते पुरा । तथैव रमते सीता निर्जनेषु वनेष्व् अपि ॥२-६०-
Just as she once delighted in the city’s gardens, so now Sītā finds joy in the solitary forests.
बाला इव रमते सीता बाल चन्द्र निभ आनना । रामा रामे हि अदीन आत्मा विजने अपि वने सती ॥२-६०-
Sītā, whose face resembles the young moon, delights like a child; for she, steadfast in spirit, dwells with Rāma even in the lonely forest.
तत् गतम् हृदयम् हि अस्याः तत् अधीनम् च जीवितम् । अयोध्या अपि भवेत् तस्या राम हीना तथा वनम् ॥२-६०-
Her heart is truly gone to him, and her life depends on him; for her, Ayodhyā without Rāma is just the same as the forest.
परि पृच्चति वैदेही ग्रामामः च नगराणि च । गतिम् दृष्ट्वा नदीनाम् च पादपान् विविधान् अपि ॥२-६०-
Vaidehī inquires about villages and towns, observing the courses of rivers and the various kinds of trees.
रामम् हि लक्ष्मनम् वापि पृष्ट्वा जानाति जानती । अयोध्याक्रोशमात्रे तु विहारमिव सम्श्रिता ॥२-६०-
By asking Rāma or Lakṣmaṇa, she learns whatever she wishes; and, as if within earshot of Ayodhyā, she finds comfort in their company.
इदमेव स्मराम्यस्याः सहसैवोपजल्पितम् । कैकेयीसम्श्रितम् वाक्यम् नेदानीम् प्रतिभाति माम् ॥२-६०-
I only recall her suddenly uttered words, spoken in connection with Kaikeyī; now, they no longer come to my mind.
ध्वम्सयित्वा तु तद्वाक्यम् प्रमादात्पर्युपस्थितम् । ह्लदनम् वचनम् सूतो देव्या मधुरमब्रवीत् ॥२-६०-
Having dispelled those words that had arisen from carelessness, the charioteer then spoke sweet, pleasing words to the queen.
