तथैव रामः अश्रु मुखः कृत अन्जलिः । स्थितः अभवल् लक्ष्मण बाहु पालितः स्थितः । तथैव सीता रुदती तपस्विनी । निरीक्षते राज रथम् तथैव माम् ॥२-५८-
In the same way, Rama, his face wet with tears and hands joined in reverence, stood protected by Lakshmana's arm; likewise, Sita, weeping and steadfast, kept her gaze fixed on the royal chariot and on me.

Listen now to the fifty-ninth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
मम तु अश्वा निवृत्तस्य न प्रावर्तन्त वर्त्मनि । उष्णम् अश्रु विमुन्चन्तः रामे सम्प्रस्थिते वनम् ॥२-५९-
But when my horses turned back, they would not proceed on the path, shedding hot tears as Rama set out for the forest.
उभाभ्याम् राज पुत्राभ्याम् अथ कृत्वा अहम् ज्ञलिम् । प्रस्थितः रथम् आस्थाय तत् दुह्खम् अपि धारयन् ॥२-५९-
Then, after making reverence with both princes, I set out, mounting the chariot, bearing that sorrow within me.
गुहा इव सार्धम् तत्र एव स्थितः अस्मि दिवसान् बहून् । आशया यदि माम् रामः पुनः शब्दापयेद् इति ॥२-५९-
I remained there together with Guha for many days, hoping that perhaps Rāma would call for me again.
विषये ते महा राज माम व्यसन कर्शिताः । अपि वृक्षाः परिम्लानः सपुष्प अन्कुर कोरकाः ॥२-५९-
O great king, in your realm, even the trees, weighed down by sorrow for me, have withered, though they bear flowers, shoots, and buds.
उपतप्तोदका नद्यः पल्वलानि सराम्सि च । परिष्कुपलाशानि वनान्युपवनानि च ॥२-५९-
The rivers have warm waters, the ponds and lakes are parched, and the forests and groves have withered leaves.
न च सर्पन्ति सत्त्वानि व्याला न प्रसरन्ति च । राम शोक अभिभूतम् तन् निष्कूजम् अभवद् वनम् ॥२-५९-
Creatures do not move about, nor do wild beasts roam; that forest, overcome by grief for Rāma, has become silent.
लीन पुष्कर पत्राः च नर इन्द्र कलुष उदकाः । सम्तप्त पद्माः पद्मिन्यो लीन मीन विहम्गमाः ॥२-५९-
The lotuses have closed their petals, their waters are turbid, the ponds are scorched, and the lilies, with their fish and birds, have disappeared.
जलजानि च पुष्पाणि माल्यानि स्थलजानि च । न अद्य भान्ति अल्प गन्धीनि फलानि च यथा पुरम् ॥२-५९-
The water-borne flowers and garlands, and those growing on land, do not shine today; their fragrance is faint, and the fruits are not as before.
अत्रोद्यानानि शून्यानि प्रलीनविहगानि च । न चाभिरामानारामान् पश्यामि मनुजर्षभ ॥२-५९-
Here, the gardens are empty, the birds have vanished, and, O best of men, I do not see the delightful parks as before.
प्रविशन्तम् अयोध्याम् माम् न कश्चित् अभिनन्दति । नरा रामम् अपश्यन्तः निह्श्वसन्ति मुहुर् मुहुः ॥२-५९-
No one welcomes me as I enter Ayodhyā; the people, deprived of seeing Rāma, sigh again and again.
देव राजरथम् दृष्ट्वा विना राममिहागतम् । दुःखादश्रुमुखः सर्वो राजमार्गगतो जनः ॥२-५९-
Seeing the royal chariot return without Rāma, all the people along the royal road are tearful with grief.
हर्म्यैः विमानैः प्रासादैः अवेक्ष्य रथम् आगतम् । हाहा कार कृता नार्यो राम अदर्शन कर्शिताः ॥२-५९-
From their mansions, palaces, and towers, the women, tormented by the sight of Rāma's absence, cry out in lamentation.
आयतैः विमलैः नेत्रैः अश्रु वेग परिप्लुतैः । अन्योन्यम् अभिवीक्षन्ते व्यक्तम् आर्ततराः स्त्रियः ॥२-५९-
With wide, clear eyes brimming with tears, the women look at each other, clearly overwhelmed with pain.
न अमित्राणाम् न मित्राणाम् उदासीन जनस्य च । अहम् आर्ततया कम्चित् विशेषम् न उपलक्षये ॥२-५९-
In my distress, I do not notice any difference between enemies, friends, or those indifferent.
अप्रहृष्ट मनुष्या च दीन नाग तुरम्गमा । आर्त स्वर परिम्लाना विनिह्श्वसित निह्स्वना ॥२-५९-
The people are joyless, the elephants and horses are dejected, their voices faint and withered, sighing deeply.
निरानन्दा महा राज राम प्रव्राजन आतुला । कौसल्या पुत्र हीना इवायोध्या प्रतिभाति मा मा ॥२-५९-
O great king, Ayodhyā, stricken by Rāma's exile, appears to me like Kausalyā bereft of her son—utterly joyless.
सूतस्य वचनम् श्रुत्वा वाचा परम दीनया । बाष्प उपहतया राजा तम् सूतम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-५९-
Hearing the charioteer's words, the king, his voice choked with tears and filled with deep sorrow, spoke to him as follows:
कैकेय्या विनियुक्तेन पाप अभिजन भावया । मया न मन्त्र कुशलैः वृद्धैः सह समर्थितम् ॥२-५९-
This was not approved by me together with the wise elders skilled in counsel, but was imposed by Kaikeyī, whose mind was set on evil.
न सुहृद्भिर् न च अमात्यैः मन्त्रयित्वा न नैगमैः । मया अयम् अर्थः सम्मोहात् स्त्री हेतोह् सहसा कृतः ॥२-५९-
Neither with friends, nor with ministers, nor with citizens did I deliberate; out of confusion and because of a woman, I made this decision suddenly.
भवितव्यतया नूनम् इदम् वा व्यसनम् महत् । कुलस्य अस्य विनाशाय प्राप्तम् सूत यदृच्चया ॥२-५९-
Surely, by fate or by some great calamity, this disaster has come upon this family, O charioteer, leading to its ruin.
सूत यद्य् अस्ति ते किम्चिन् मया अपि सुकृतम् कृतम् । त्वम् प्रापय आशु माम् रामम् प्राणाः सम्त्वरयन्ति माम् ॥२-५९-
Charioteer, if I have ever done any good for you, quickly take me to Rāma; my life is hurrying me on.
यद् यद् या अपि मम एव आज्ञा निवर्तयतु राघवम् । न शक्ष्यामि विना राम मुहूर्तम् अपि जीवितुम् ॥२-५९-
Whatever command I have, let it turn Rāghava back; I cannot live even for a moment without Rāma.
अथवा अपि महा बाहुर् गतः दूरम् भविष्यति । माम् एव रथम् आरोप्य शीघ्रम् रामाय दर्शय ॥२-५९-
Or if the mighty-armed one has already gone far, then place me on the chariot and swiftly show me to Rāma.
वृत्त दम्ष्ट्रः महा इष्वासः क्व असौ लक्ष्मण पूर्वजः । यदि जीवामि साध्व् एनम् पश्येयम् सह सीतया ॥२-५९-
Where is that elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa, with curved tusks and great bow? If I live, may I see him together with Sītā.
लोहित अक्षम् महा बाहुम् आमुक्त मणि कुण्डलम् । रामम् यदि न पश्यामि गमिष्यामि यम क्षयम् ॥२-५९-
If I do not see Rāma, with blood-red eyes, mighty arms, and gem-studded earrings, I will go to the abode of Yama.
अतः नु किम् दुह्खतरम् यो अहम् इक्ष्वाकु नन्दनम् । इमाम् अवस्थाम् आपन्नो न इह पश्यामि राघवम् ॥२-५९-
What could be more painful than this: that I, descended from Ikṣvāku, have come to this state and do not see Rāghava here?
हा राम राम अनुज हा हा वैदेहि तपस्विनी । न माम् जानीत दुह्खेन म्रियमाणम् अनाथवत् ॥२-५९-
Alas, Rāma! Rāma's younger brother! Alas, ascetic Vaidehī! You do not know that I am dying, abandoned by sorrow.
स तेन राजा दुःखेन भृशमर्पितचेतनः । अवगाढः सुदुष्पारम् शोकसागमब्रवीत् ॥२-५९-
Overwhelmed by intense grief, the king, his mind utterly afflicted, plunged into the ocean of sorrow, impossible to cross, and spoke.
