ताम् निष्ठताम् बद्धकटाम् दृष्ट्वा रमः सुदर्शनाम् । शुश्रूषमाणम् एक अग्रम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-५६-
Seeing the completed hut, well-tied and beautiful, Rāma spoke these words to his attentive younger brother.
ऐणेयम् माम्सम् आहृत्य शालाम् यक्ष्यामहे वयम् । कर्त्व्यम् वास्तुशमनम् सौमित्रे चिरजीवभिः ॥२-५६-
Let us offer the meat of a deer here in the hut, Saumitri; the ritual for settling a dwelling must be performed by those who wish for long life.
मृगम् हत्वाऽऽनय क्षिप्रम् लक्ष्मणेह शुभेक्षणकर्तव्यः शास्त्रदृष्टो हि विधिर्दर्ममनुस्मर ॥२-५६-
Kill a deer and bring it quickly, Lakṣmaṇa, for this must be done; remember the rule prescribed in the scriptures, which is righteous.
भ्रातुर्वचन माज्ञाय लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा । चकार स यथोक्तम् च तम् रामः पुनरब्रवीत् ॥२-५६-
Understanding his brother's command, Lakṣmaṇa, slayer of enemies, did as instructed, and Rāma spoke to him again.
इणेयम् श्रपयस्वैतच्च्चालाम् यक्ष्यमहे वयम् । त्वरसौम्य मुहूर्तोऽयम् ध्रुवश्च दिवसोऽप्ययम् ॥२-५६-
Let this black antelope be prepared as an offering; we shall perform the sacrifice. Hurry, gentle one, for this moment is fleeting, and the day is surely passing.
स लक्ष्मणः कृष्ण मृगम् हत्वा मेध्यम् पतापवान् । अथ चिक्षेप सौमित्रिः समिद्धे जात वेदसि ॥२-५६-
Then Lakshmana, powerful son of Sumitra, killed the black antelope, which was pure, and cast it into the blazing fire.
तम् तु पक्वम् समाज्ञाय निष्टप्तम् चिन्न शोणितम् । लक्ष्मणः पुरुष व्याघ्रम् अथ राघवम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-५६-
When he saw that it was cooked, thoroughly roasted, and without blood, Lakshmana, tiger among men, spoke to Raghava.
अयम् कृष्णः समाप्त अन्गः शृतः कृष्ण मृगो यथा । देवता देव सम्काश यजस्व कुशलो हि असि ॥२-५६-
This black antelope is now fully prepared, O noble one, cooked as it should be. Like a god among men, offer the sacrifice, for you are skilled in the rites.
रामः स्नात्वा तु नियतः गुणवान् जप्य कोविदः । सम्ग्रहेणाकरोत्सर्वान् मन्त्रान् सत्रावसानिकान् ॥२-५६-
Rama, self-controlled, virtuous, and learned in sacred chants, bathed and then recited all the concluding mantras of the sacrifice in summary.
इष्ट्वा देवगणान् सर्वान् विवेशावसथम् शुचिः । बभूव च मनोह्लादो रामस्यामिततेजसः ॥२-५६-
Having worshipped all the hosts of gods, Rama, pure and of immeasurable brilliance, entered the shelter, his mind filled with joy.
वैश्वदेवबलिम् कृत्वा रौद्रम् वैष्णवमेव च । वास्तुसम्शमनीयानि मङ्गLआनि प्रवर्तयन् ॥२-५६-
He performed the Vaiśvadeva offering, as well as the fierce and the Vaiṣṇava rites, and began auspicious ceremonies to pacify the dwelling.
जपम् च न्यायतः कृत्वा स्नात्वा नद्याम् यथाविधि । पाप सम्शमनम् रामः चकार बलिम् उत्तमम् ॥२-५६-
Having properly recited the prayers and bathed in the river according to rule, Rama performed the highest offering to remove sin.
वेदिस्थलविधानानि चैत्यान्यायतनानि च । आश्रमस्यानुरूपाणि स्थापयामास राघवः ॥२-५६-
Raghava established altars, shrines, and sanctuaries appropriate to the hermitage.
वन्यैर्माल्यैः फलैर्मूलैः पक्वैर्माम्सैर्यथाविधि । अद्भर्जपैश्च वेदोक्तै र्धर्भैश्च ससमित्कुशैः ॥२-५६-
With forest garlands, fruits, roots, ripe meats as prescribed, and water for libations, as well as sacred darbha grass and kindling, as taught in the Vedas,
तौ तर्पयित्वा भूतानि राघवौ सह सीतया । तदा विविशतुः शालाम् सुशुभाम् शुभलक्षणौ ॥२-५६-
The two Raghavas, together with Sita, satisfied the beings, and then, marked by auspicious signs, entered the beautiful shelter.
ताम् वृक्ष पर्णच् चदनाम् मनोज्ञाम् । यथा प्रदेशम् सुकृताम् निवाताम् । वासाय सर्वे विविशुः समेताः । सभाम् यथा देव गणाः सुधर्माम् ॥२-५६-
That delightful leaf-thatched hut, well-built and sheltered from the wind, they all entered together for dwelling, like the hosts of gods entering the noble assembly hall.
अनेक नाना मृग पक्षि सम्कुले । विचित्र पुष्प स्तबलैः द्रुमैः युते । वन उत्तमे व्याल मृग अनुनादिते । तथा विजह्रुः सुसुखम् जित इन्द्रियाः ॥२-५६-
In that excellent forest, resounding with wild beasts, filled with many kinds of deer and birds, and adorned with trees bearing clusters of varied flowers, they rejoiced happily, their senses conquered.
सुरम्यम् आसाद्य तु चित्र कूटम् । नदीम् च ताम् माल्यवतीम् सुतीर्थाम् । ननन्द हृष्टः मृग पक्षि जुष्टाम् । जहौ च दुह्खम् पुर विप्रवासात् ॥२-५६-
Having reached that charming, picturesque mountain and the sacred river Mālyavatī, frequented by deer and birds, Rama rejoiced, his heart uplifted, and let go of the sorrow caused by exile from his city.

The fifty-seventh sarga is now to be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa.
कथयित्वा सुदुह्ख आर्तः सुमन्त्रेण चिरम् सह । रामे दक्षिण कूलस्थे जगाम स्व गृहम् गुहः ॥२-५७-
After speaking for a long time, overwhelmed with deep sorrow, with Sumantra, Guha returned to his own home when Rama had reached the southern bank.
भरद्वाजाभिगमनम् प्रयागे च सहासनम् । आगिरेर्गमनम् तेषाम् तत्रस्थैरभिलक्षितम् ॥२-५७-
The journey to Bharadvāja, their stay at Prayāga, and their ascent of the mountain were all observed by those present there.
अनुज्ञातः सुमन्त्रः अथ योजयित्वा हय उत्तमान् । अयोध्याम् एव नगरीम् प्रययौ गाढ दुर्मनाः ॥२-५७-
Then Sumantra, having been permitted, yoked the excellent horses and, his heart greatly troubled, set out for the city of Ayodhyā.
स वनानि सुगन्धीनि सरितः च सराम्सि च । पश्यन्न् अतिययौ शीघ्रम् ग्रामाणि नगराणि च ॥२-५७-
Passing swiftly, he beheld fragrant forests, rivers, and lakes, as well as villages and cities.
ततः साय अह्न समये तृतीये अहनि सारथिः । अयोध्याम् समनुप्राप्य निरानन्दाम् ददर्श ह ॥२-५७-
Then, at the third day’s evening hour, the charioteer reached Ayodhya and saw it bereft of joy.
स शून्याम् इव निह्शब्दाम् दृष्ट्वा परम दुर्मनाः । सुमन्त्रः चिन्तयाम् आस शोक वेग समाहतः ॥२-५७-
Seeing it silent and deserted, Sumantra, deeply distressed and struck by a surge of sorrow, began to reflect.
कच्चिन् न सगजा साश्वा सजना सजन अधिपा । राम सम्ताप दुह्खेन दग्धा शोक अग्निना पुरी ॥२-५७-
Has this city, with its elephants, horses, people, and rulers, been consumed by the fire of grief for Rama?
इति चिन्ता परः सूतः वाजिभिः श्रीघ्रपातिभिः । नगरद्वारमासाद्य त्वरितः प्रविवेश ह ॥२-५७-
Thus filled with anxious thoughts, the charioteer, with his swift-footed horses, hurriedly entered the city gate.
सुमन्त्रम् अभियान्तम् तम् शतशो अथ सहस्रशः । क्व रामैति पृच्चन्तः सूतम् अभ्यद्रवन् नराः ॥२-५७-
As Sumantra approached, hundreds and thousands of men rushed toward the charioteer, asking, 'Where is Rama?'
तेषाम् शशम्स गङ्गायाम् अहम् आपृच्च्य राघवम् । अनुज्ञातः निवृत्तः अस्मि धार्मिकेण महात्मना ॥२-५७-
To them he said, 'After taking leave of Raghava at the Ganga, I was permitted to return by that righteous, great-souled one.'
ते तीर्णाइति विज्ञाय बाष्प पूर्ण मुखा जनाः । अहो धिग् इति निश्श्वस्य हा राम इति च चुक्रुशुः ॥२-५७-
Learning that they had crossed, the people, their faces filled with tears, sighed, 'Alas! Fie!' and cried out, 'Ah, Rama!'
