कर्मान्तिकाञ्शिल्पकारान् वर्धकीन् खनकानपि । गणकाञ्शिल्पिनश्चैव तथैव नटनर्तकान् ॥१-१३-
He summoned the skilled artisans, carpenters, diggers, calculators, craftsmen, as well as actors and dancers.
तथा शुचीञ्शास्त्रविदः पुरुषान् सुबहुश्रुतान् । यज्ञकर्म समीहन्तां भवन्तो राजशासनात् ॥१-१३-
Likewise, he called upon pure and learned men, those well-versed in the scriptures: 'Let the sacrifice be undertaken by you all, by the king's command.'
इष्टका बहुसाहस्री शीघ्रमानीयतामिति । उपकार्याः क्रियन्तां च राज्ञो बहुगुणान्विताः ॥१-१३-
Let thousands of bricks be quickly brought, and let the necessary preparations be made for the king, with great care and excellence.
ब्राह्मणावसथाश्चैव कर्तव्याः शतशः शुभाः । भक्ष्यान्नपानैर्बहुभिः समुपेताः सुनिष्ठिताः ॥१-१३-
Let hundreds of auspicious dwellings for Brahmins be constructed, well-equipped and furnished with abundant food and drink.
तथा पौरजनस्यापि कर्तव्याश्च सुविस्तराः । आगतानां सुदूराच्च पार्थिवानां पृथक् पृथक् ॥१-१३-
Likewise, spacious accommodations should be arranged for the townspeople, and separately for the kings arriving from distant lands.
वाजिवारणशालाश्च तथा शय्यागृहाणि च । भटानां महदावासा वैदेशिकनिवासिनाम् ॥१-१३-
Stables for horses and elephants, as well as sleeping quarters, and large residences for soldiers and foreign guests, should also be prepared.
दातव्यमन्नं विधिवत् सत्कृत्य न तु लीलया । सर्वे वर्णा यथा पूजां प्राप्नुवन्ति सुसत्कृताः ॥१-१३-
Food must be given properly and with respect, not carelessly, so that all castes receive due honor and are well attended.
न चावज्ञा प्रयोक्तव्या कामक्रोधवशादपि । यज्ञकर्मसु ये व्यग्राः पुरुषाः शिल्पिनस्तथा ॥१-१३-
No disrespect should be shown, even out of desire or anger, to those engaged in the sacrificial tasks, including the artisans.
तेषामपि विशेषेण पूजा कार्या यथाक्रमम् । ये स्युः सम्पूजिताः सर्वे वसुभिर्भोजनेन च ॥१-१३-
They too must be especially honored in due order, so that all are properly respected with gifts and meals.
यथा सर्वं सुविहितं न किंचित् परिहीयते । तथा भवन्तः कुर्वन्तु प्रीतियुक्तेन चेतसा ॥१-१३-
Let everything be arranged so that nothing is lacking; do this with minds full of joy and devotion.
ततः सर्वे समागम्य वसिष्ठमिदमब्रुवन् । यथेष्टं तत् सुविहितं न किंचित् परिहीयते ॥१-१३-
Then, all assembled and said to Vasiṣṭha: 'Everything has been properly arranged as you wished; nothing is left incomplete.'
यथोक्तं तत् करिष्यामो न किंचित् परिहास्यते । ततः सुमन्त्रमाहूय वसिष्ठो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१-१३-
'We will do as you have instructed; nothing will be neglected.' Then Vasiṣṭha summoned Sumantra and spoke these words:
निमन्त्रयस्व नृपतीन् पृथिव्यां ये च धार्मिकाः । ब्राह्मणान् क्षत्रियान् वैश्याञ्शूद्रांश्चैव सहस्रशः ॥१-१३-
Invite the righteous kings of the earth, as well as thousands of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras.
समानयस्व सत्कृत्य सर्वदेशेषु मानवान् । मिथिलाधिपतिं शूरं जनकं सत्यवादिनम् ॥१-१३-
Bring, with due honor, people from all regions, especially Janaka, the brave and truthful lord of Mithila.
तमानय महाभागं स्वयमेव सुसत्कृतम् । पूर्वं सम्बन्धिनं ज्ञात्वा ततः पूर्वं ब्रवीमि ते ॥१-१३-
Bring that illustrious one yourself, treating him with great respect, for he is an old ally; therefore, I mention him first.
तथा काशिपतिं स्निग्धं सततं प्रियवादिनम् । सद्वृत्तं देवसंकाशं स्वयमेवानयस्व ह ॥१-१३-
Likewise, bring the affectionate and always kindly-spoken king of Kāśi, of noble conduct and godlike appearance, yourself.
तथा केकयराजानं वृद्धं परमधार्मिकम् । श्वशुरं राजसिंहस्य सपुत्रं तमिहानय ॥१-१३-
Also bring the aged and supremely righteous king of the Kekayas, the father-in-law of the lion among kings, along with his sons.
अङ्गेश्वरं महेष्वासं रोमपादं सुसत्कृतम् । वयस्यं राजसिंहस्य सपुत्रं तमिहानय ॥१-१३-
Bring Romapāda, the lord of Aṅga, mighty with the bow and well-honored, the friend of the lion among kings, together with his sons.
तथा कोसलराजानं भानुमन्तं सुसंस्कृतम् । मगधाधिपतिं शूरं सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम् ॥१-१३-
Likewise, bring the well-cultured king Bhānumant of Kosala, and the brave and learned lord of Magadha, master of all sciences.
प्राप्तिज्ञं परमोदारं सत्कृतं पुरुषर्षभम् । राज्ञः शासनमादाय चोदयस्व नृपर्षभान् । प्राचीनान् सिन्धुसौवीरान् सौराष्ठ्रेयांश्च पार्थिवान् ॥१-१३-
Bring the wise, most generous, and honored best among men, who knows the proper time to arrive; take the king's command and urge the foremost kings—those of the East, Sindhu, Sauvīra, and Saurāṣṭra.
दाक्षिणात्यान् नरेन्द्रांश्च समस्तानानयस्व ह । सन्ति स्निग्धाश्च ये चान्ये राजानः पृथिवीतले ॥१-१३-
Summon all the southern kings, and any other friendly rulers who dwell upon the earth.
तानानय यथा क्षिप्रं सानुगान् सहबान्धवान् । एतान् दूतैर्महाभागैरानयस्व नृपाज्ञया ॥१-१३-
Bring them quickly, together with their retinues and relatives; send for them with noble messengers, by the king’s command.
वसिष्ठवाक्यं तच्छ्रुत्वा सुमन्त्रस्त्वरितं तदा । व्यादिशत् पुरुषांस्तत्र राज्ञामानयने शुभान् ॥१-१३-
Hearing Vasiṣṭha’s words, Sumantra at once ordered the worthy men there to bring the kings.
स्वयमेव हि धर्मात्मा प्रयातो मुनिशासनात् । सुमन्त्रस्त्वरितो भूत्वा समानेतुं महामतिः ॥१-१३-
Obeying the sage’s instruction, the righteous Sumantra himself, swift and wise, set out to gather them.
ते च कर्मान्तिकाः सर्वे वसिष्ठाय महर्षये । सर्वं निवेदयन्ति स्म यज्ञे यदुपकल्पितम् ॥१-१३-
All those in charge of the preparations reported everything that had been arranged for the sacrifice to the great sage Vasiṣṭha.
ततः प्रीतो द्विजश्रेष्ठस्तान् सर्वान् मुनिरब्रवीत् । अवज्ञया न दातव्यं कस्यचिल्लीलयापि वा ॥१-१३-
Then the delighted best of twice-born sages addressed them all: ‘Let nothing be given with disrespect or carelessness to anyone.’
अवज्ञया कृतं हन्याद् दातारं नात्र संशयः । ततः कैश्चिदहोरात्रैरुपयाता महीक्षितः ॥१-१३-
If anything is given with disrespect, it destroys the giver—of this there is no doubt. Then, within a few days and nights, the kings arrived.
बहूनि रत्नान्यादाय राज्ञो दशरथस्य ह । ततो वसिष्ठः सुप्रीतो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१-१३-
Bringing many jewels for King Daśaratha, Vasiṣṭha, well pleased, spoke to the king.
उपयाता नरव्याघ्र राजानस्तव शासनात् । मयापि सत्कृताः सर्वे यथार्हं राजसत्तमाः ॥१-१३-
‘O tiger among men, the kings have come at your command; I have honored them all as is fitting, O best of kings.’
यज्ञियं च कृतं सर्वं पुरुषैः सुसमाहितैः । निर्यातु च भवान् यष्टुं यज्ञायतनमन्तिकात् ॥१-१३-
All the sacrificial preparations have been properly completed by the attentive men; you may proceed from your residence to the sacrificial ground to perform the rite.
