Following the path of the chariot, those thoughtful ones turned back, saying, 'What is this? What shall we do, struck down by fate?'
Then, by the same route by which they had come, with weary hearts, they all returned to Ayodhyā, the city of troubled people.
Beholding that city, their minds agitated by loss, they shed tears from eyes afflicted by grief.
This city, bereft of Rāma, does not shine; like a river whose serpents have been snatched away by Garuḍa from its pool.
Like the sky without the moon, like the ocean without water, they saw the city, bereft of joy, their minds bewildered.
Entering those mansions, rich and splendid, afflicted by sorrow and overwhelmed by grief, they could not recognize their own people or others, gazing about, their joy utterly vanished.

As they were thus distressed and deeply afflicted, their eyes filled with tears, overwhelmed by sorrow and the wish to die—
After following Rāma and then returning, the city-dwellers seemed as if their spirits had departed, their minds lost.
Each returned to their own home, surrounded by children and spouses, and all shed tears, their faces veiled by weeping.
No one rejoiced, no one was gladdened; merchants did not display their wares, and goods did not appear attractive, nor did householders cook meals.
Even upon recovering lost wealth, no one celebrated great gains; nor did a mother rejoice when she received her firstborn son.
In every house, women wept and reproached their husbands who had returned home, their words sharp as goads to elephants, tormented by grief.
What use are houses to them, or wives, or wealth? What use are sons or even pleasures, for those who do not see Rāghava?
Only one true man remains in the world—Lakṣmaṇa, who, together with Sītā, follows Kakutstha Rāma, serving him in the forest.
Blessed are those rivers, those lotus-filled lakes and ponds, in whose pure waters Kakutstha will bathe.
The delightful forests, the great rivers, the vast marshlands, and the mountains with their peaks will all bring beauty to Kakutstha.
Any forest or mountain that Rāma approaches will not fail to honor him as a beloved guest who has arrived.
With crowns of varied flowers and abundant offerings, even out of season, the finest blossoms and fruits will appear.
Even out of season, the best flowers and fruits will be shown to Rāma by the mountains, out of compassion, when he arrives.
The mountains will pour forth pure waters, revealing many wondrous and colorful waterfalls.
The trees on the mountain peaks will delight Rāghava; wherever Rāma is, there is no fear, nor can there be defeat.
For he is a hero, mighty-armed, the son of Daśaratha; before he goes far, let us follow Rāghava.
The shade of such a great soul as our lord is comforting; he is the protector, the refuge, and the goal of these people.
We will serve Sītā, and you will serve Rāghava—so, in their grief, the city women spoke various words to their husbands.
Rāghava will ensure your welfare and security in the forest; Sītā, a woman, will provide for the welfare and security of these people.
Who could find joy in this unpleasant dwelling, with its unwelcoming, anxious people, and their distracted minds?
If Kaikeyī rules, unrighteously and as if without guardianship, then life holds no value for us—nor sons, nor wealth.
She who has abandoned her son and husband for the sake of power—whom else would Kaikeyī, the stain of her lineage, not forsake?
We would not remain in the kingdom as servants under Kaikeyī; while she lives, we curse even living with our sons.
Who, having encountered that cruel woman who banishes the king's son, could live happily with such a wicked, unrighteous one?
