सर्वथा प्राप्यसे पुत्रांश्चतुरोऽमितविक्रमान् । यस्य ते धार्मिकी बुद्धिरियं पुत्रार्थमागता ॥१-१२-
'You will surely obtain four sons of immeasurable valor, since your righteous intention for a son has arisen.'
ततः प्रीतोऽभवद् राजा श्रुत्वा तु द्विजभाषितम् । अमात्यानब्रवीद् राजा हर्षेणेदं शुभाक्षरम् ॥१-१२-
Then the king, pleased after hearing the words of the twice-born, spoke to his ministers with joy, uttering these auspicious words:
गुरूणां वचनाच्छीघ्रं सम्भाराः सम्भ्रियन्तु मे । समर्थाधिष्ठितश्चाश्वः सोपाध्यायो विमुच्यताम् ॥१-१२-
By the command of the elders, let the preparations for the sacrifice be quickly arranged for me; let the horse, under the supervision of a capable overseer and accompanied by a teacher, be released.
सरय्वाश्चोत्तरे तीरे यज्ञभूमिर्विधीयताम् । शान्तयश्चाभिवर्धन्तां यथाकल्पं यथाविधि ॥१-१२-
Let the sacrificial ground be prepared on the northern bank of the Sarayu; let the rites of pacification be performed according to the prescribed rules and procedures.
शक्यः कर्तुमयं यज्ञः सर्वेणापि महीक्षिता । नापराधो भवेत् कष्टो यद्यस्मिन् क्रतुसत्तमे ॥१-१२-
This sacrifice can indeed be performed by any king of the earth; let there be no grave error in this most excellent ritual.
छिद्रं हि मृगयन्त्येते विद्वांसो ब्रह्मराक्षसाः । विधिहीनस्य यज्ञस्य सद्यः कर्ता विनश्यति ॥१-१२-
For the learned Brahma-rakshasas seek out flaws; if a sacrifice is performed without proper procedure, its performer is immediately destroyed.
तद् यथा विधिपूर्वं मे क्रतुरेष समाप्यते । तथा विधानं क्रियतां समर्थाः करणेष्विह ॥१-१२-
Therefore, let this sacrifice be completed for me in full accordance with the prescribed rules; let those skilled in the tasks arrange everything accordingly.
तथेति च ततः सर्वे मन्त्रिणः प्रत्यपूजयन् । पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य तद् वाक्यं यथाज्ञप्तमकुर्वत ॥१-१२-
Then all the ministers, saying 'So be it,' honored the king's command and carried it out as instructed.
ततो द्विजास्ते धर्मज्ञमस्तुवन् पार्थिवर्षभम् । अनुज्ञातास्ततः सर्वे पुनर्जग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥१-१२-
Then those twice-born men praised the king, knower of righteousness, and, having been permitted, all departed as they had come.
गतेषु तेषु विप्रेषु मन्त्रिणस्तान् नराधिपः । विसर्जयित्वा स्वं वेश्म प्रविवेश महामतिः ॥१-१२-
When those Brahmins had gone, the wise king dismissed his ministers and entered his own palace.

Listen now to the thirteenth chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Bāla Kāṇḍa.
पुनः प्राप्ते वसन्ते तु पूर्णः संवत्सरोऽभवत् । प्रसवार्थं गतो यष्टुं हयमेधेन वीर्यवान् ॥१-१३-
When spring returned, a full year had passed; the mighty one set out to perform the horse sacrifice for the sake of offspring.
अभिवाद्य वसिष्ठं च न्यायतः प्रतिपूज्य च । अब्रवीत् प्रश्रितं वाक्यं प्रसवार्थं द्विजोत्तमम् ॥१-१३-
After respectfully greeting and properly honoring Vasiṣṭha, he spoke humbly to the foremost of Brahmins about his desire for progeny.
यज्ञो मे क्रियतां ब्रह्मन् यथोक्तं मुनिपुङ्गव । यथा न विघ्नाः क्रियन्ते यज्ञाङ्गेषु विधीयताम् ॥१-१३-
O Brahmin, let the sacrifice be performed for me as prescribed, O best of sages, so that no obstacles may arise in any part of the ritual.
भवान् स्निग्धः सुहृन्मह्यं गुरुश्च परमो महान् । वोढव्यो भवता चैव भारो यज्ञस्य चोद्यतः ॥१-१३-
You are affectionate, a true friend to me, and my supreme and great teacher; the burden of this sacrifice, now undertaken, must be borne by you.
तथेति च स राजानमब्रवीद् द्विजसत्तमः । करिष्ये सर्वमेवैतद् भवता यत् समर्थितम् ॥१-१३-
The best of Brahmins replied to the king, 'So be it; I will accomplish all that you have resolved.'
ततोऽब्रवीद् द्विजान् वृद्धान् यज्ञकर्मसुनिष्ठितान् । स्थापत्ये निष्ठितांश्चैव वृद्धान् परमधार्मिकान् ॥१-१३-
Then he addressed the aged Brahmins, those well-versed in sacrificial rites, as well as the senior, most righteous masters of construction.
कर्मान्तिकाञ्शिल्पकारान् वर्धकीन् खनकानपि । गणकाञ्शिल्पिनश्चैव तथैव नटनर्तकान् ॥१-१३-
He summoned the skilled artisans, carpenters, diggers, calculators, craftsmen, as well as actors and dancers.
तथा शुचीञ्शास्त्रविदः पुरुषान् सुबहुश्रुतान् । यज्ञकर्म समीहन्तां भवन्तो राजशासनात् ॥१-१३-
Likewise, he called upon pure and learned men, those well-versed in the scriptures: 'Let the sacrifice be undertaken by you all, by the king's command.'
इष्टका बहुसाहस्री शीघ्रमानीयतामिति । उपकार्याः क्रियन्तां च राज्ञो बहुगुणान्विताः ॥१-१३-
Let thousands of bricks be quickly brought, and let the necessary preparations be made for the king, with great care and excellence.
ब्राह्मणावसथाश्चैव कर्तव्याः शतशः शुभाः । भक्ष्यान्नपानैर्बहुभिः समुपेताः सुनिष्ठिताः ॥१-१३-
Let hundreds of auspicious dwellings for Brahmins be constructed, well-equipped and furnished with abundant food and drink.
तथा पौरजनस्यापि कर्तव्याश्च सुविस्तराः । आगतानां सुदूराच्च पार्थिवानां पृथक् पृथक् ॥१-१३-
Likewise, spacious accommodations should be arranged for the townspeople, and separately for the kings arriving from distant lands.
वाजिवारणशालाश्च तथा शय्यागृहाणि च । भटानां महदावासा वैदेशिकनिवासिनाम् ॥१-१३-
Stables for horses and elephants, as well as sleeping quarters, and large residences for soldiers and foreign guests, should also be prepared.
दातव्यमन्नं विधिवत् सत्कृत्य न तु लीलया । सर्वे वर्णा यथा पूजां प्राप्नुवन्ति सुसत्कृताः ॥१-१३-
Food must be given properly and with respect, not carelessly, so that all castes receive due honor and are well attended.
न चावज्ञा प्रयोक्तव्या कामक्रोधवशादपि । यज्ञकर्मसु ये व्यग्राः पुरुषाः शिल्पिनस्तथा ॥१-१३-
No disrespect should be shown, even out of desire or anger, to those engaged in the sacrificial tasks, including the artisans.
तेषामपि विशेषेण पूजा कार्या यथाक्रमम् । ये स्युः सम्पूजिताः सर्वे वसुभिर्भोजनेन च ॥१-१३-
They too must be especially honored in due order, so that all are properly respected with gifts and meals.
यथा सर्वं सुविहितं न किंचित् परिहीयते । तथा भवन्तः कुर्वन्तु प्रीतियुक्तेन चेतसा ॥१-१३-
Let everything be arranged so that nothing is lacking; do this with minds full of joy and devotion.
ततः सर्वे समागम्य वसिष्ठमिदमब्रुवन् । यथेष्टं तत् सुविहितं न किंचित् परिहीयते ॥१-१३-
Then, all assembled and said to Vasiṣṭha: 'Everything has been properly arranged as you wished; nothing is left incomplete.'
यथोक्तं तत् करिष्यामो न किंचित् परिहास्यते । ततः सुमन्त्रमाहूय वसिष्ठो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१-१३-
'We will do as you have instructed; nothing will be neglected.' Then Vasiṣṭha summoned Sumantra and spoke these words:
निमन्त्रयस्व नृपतीन् पृथिव्यां ये च धार्मिकाः । ब्राह्मणान् क्षत्रियान् वैश्याञ्शूद्रांश्चैव सहस्रशः ॥१-१३-
Invite the righteous kings of the earth, as well as thousands of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras.
