ततो हलहलाशब्दो जज्ञे रामस्य पृष्ठतः। नराणां प्रेक्ष्य राजानं सीदन्तं भृशदुःखितम्
Then a tumultuous sound arose behind Rāma, as the people, seeing the king sinking and greatly distressed, gathered.
हा रामेति जनाः केचिद् राममातेति चापरे। अन्तःपुरसमृद्धं च क्रोशन्तं पर्यदेवयन्
Some people cried, 'Alas, Rāma!' and others, 'O Rāma's mother!' and those within the inner chambers wailed, lamenting loudly.
अन्वीक्षमाणो रामस्तु विषण्णं भ्रान्तचेतसम्। राजानं मातरं चैव ददर्शानुगतौ पथि
Rāma, looking back, saw the king and his mother, both following him on the road, their minds troubled and dejected.
पदातिनौ च यानार्हावदुःखार्हौ सुखोचितौ। दृष्ट्वा संचोदयामास शीघ्रं याहीति सारथिम्
Seeing his parents, who were accustomed to comfort but now suffering and forced to walk on foot, he urged the charioteer, 'Go quickly!'
नहि तत् पुरुषव्याघ्रो दुःखजं दर्शनं पितुः। मातुश्च सहितुं शक्तस्तोत्त्रैर्नुन्न इव द्विपः
That tiger among men could not bear the sorrowful sight of his father and mother, just as an elephant struck by goads cannot endure the pain.
प्रत्यगारमिवायान्ती सवत्सा वत्सकारणात्। बद्धवत्सा यथा धेनू राममाताभ्यधावत
Just as a cow, bound and separated from her calf, runs towards her calf, so did Rāma's mother rush towards him.
तथा रुदन्तीं कौसल्यां रथं तमनुधावतीम्। क्रोशन्तीं राम रामेति हा सीते लक्ष्मणेति च
Thus, Kausalyā, weeping and running after the chariot, cried out, 'Rāma! Alas, Sītā! Lakṣmaṇa!'
रामलक्ष्मणसीतार्थं स्रवन्तीं वारि नेत्रजम्। असकृत् प्रैक्षत स तां नृत्यन्तीमिव मातरम्
He looked again and again at his mother, who, for the sake of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sītā, shed tears like water, as if she were dancing in grief.
तिष्ठेति राजा चुक्रोश याहि याहीति राघवः। सुमन्त्रस्य बभूवात्मा चक्रयोरिव चान्तरा
The king shouted, 'Stop!' but Rāghava called, 'Go, go!' and Sumantra's mind was caught between their commands, like something caught between two wheels.
नाश्रौषमिति राजानमुपालब्धोऽपि वक्ष्यसि। चिरं दुःखस्य पापिष्ठमिति रामस्तमब्रवीत्
Rāma said to him, 'Even if the king reproaches you, say you did not hear; for long suffering is most sinful.'
स रामस्य वचः कुर्वन्ननुज्ञाप्य च तं जनम्। व्रजतोऽपि हयान् शीघ्रं चोदयामास सारथिः
Obeying Rāma's words and taking leave of the people, the charioteer quickly urged the horses onward, even as they departed.
न्यवर्तत जनो राज्ञो रामं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम्। मनसाप्याशुवेगेन न न्यवर्तत मानुषम्
The people turned back after circling Rāma, but in their hearts, moved by swift emotion, they did not turn away from him.
यमिच्छेत् पुनरायातं नैनं दूरमनुव्रजेत्। इत्यमात्या महाराजमूचुर्दशरथं वचः
The ministers said to King Daśaratha, 'Let no one follow him far, if you wish for his return.'
तेषां वचः सर्वगुणोपपन्नः प्रस्विन्नगात्रः प्रविषण्णरूपः। निशम्य राजा कृपणः सभार्यो व्यवस्थितस्तं सुतमीक्षमाणः
Hearing their words, full of all virtues, the wretched king, sweating and downcast, stood there with his wife, gazing at his son.

As that tiger among men departed with joined palms, a great cry of anguish arose from the women within the inner chambers.
अनाथस्य जनस्यास्य दुर्बलस्य तपस्विनः। यो गतिः शरणं चासीत् स नाथः क्व नु गच्छति
He was the refuge and protector of these helpless, weak, and ascetic people—where now does that protector go?
न क्रुध्यत्यभिशस्तोऽपि क्रोधनीयानि वर्जयन्। क्रुद्धान् प्रसादयन् सर्वान् समदुःखः क्व गच्छति
He did not grow angry even when insulted, avoided causes for anger, and calmed all who were angry—where does such a one, equal in sorrow, go now?
कौसल्यायां महातेजा यथा मातरि वर्तते। तथा यो वर्ततेऽस्मासु महात्मा क्व नु गच्छति
Just as he behaves toward his mother Kausalya with great energy, so does that great soul behave toward us; where indeed is he going?
कैकेय्या क्लिश्यमानेन राज्ञा संचोदितो वनम्। परित्राता जनस्यास्य जगतः क्व नु गच्छति
Urged by the king, who is afflicted by Kaikeyi, he goes to the forest; where indeed is the protector of these people, of the world, going?
अहो निश्चेतनो राजा जीवलोकस्य संक्षयम्। धर्म्यं सत्यव्रतं रामं वनवासे प्रवत्स्यति
Alas, the king is senseless, bringing ruin to the world of the living, sending Rama, who is righteous and true to his vows, to dwell in the forest.
इति सर्वा महिष्यस्ता विवत्सा इव धेनवः। रुरुदुश्चैव दुःखार्ताः सस्वरं च विचुक्रुशुः
Thus all the royal wives, distressed like cows bereft of calves, wept and cried out aloud in sorrow.
स तमन्तःपुरे घोरमार्तशब्दं महीपतिः। पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तः श्रुत्वा चासीत् सुदुःखितः
The king, tormented by grief for his son, heard that terrible sound of anguish within the palace and became deeply distressed.
नाग्निहोत्राण्यहूयन्त नापचन् गृहमेधिनः। अकुर्वन् न प्रजाः कार्यं सूर्यश्चान्तरधीयत
No sacrificial fires were offered, householders did not cook, people neglected their duties, and even the sun disappeared.
व्यसृजन् कवलान् नागा गावो वत्सान् न पाययन्। पुत्रां प्रथमजं लब्ध्वा जननी नाभ्यनन्दत
Elephants released their morsels, cows did not feed their calves, and mothers, having given birth to their firstborn sons, did not rejoice.
त्रिशङ्कुर्लोहिताङ्गश्च बृहस्पतिबुधावपि। दारुणाः सोममभ्येत्य ग्रहाः सर्वे व्यवस्थिताः
Triśaṅku, Lohitāṅga, Bṛhaspati, Budha, and all the harsh planets approached Soma and took their positions.
नक्षत्राणि गतार्चींषि ग्रहाश्च गततेजसः। विशाखाश्च सधूमाश्च नभसि प्रचकाशिरे
The stars lost their radiance, the planets lost their brilliance, and Viśākhā appeared in the sky with smoke.
कालिकानिलवेगेन महोदधिरिवोत्थितः। रामे वनं प्रव्रजिते नगरं प्रचचाल तत्
As Rama departed for the forest, the city shook like the great ocean stirred by the force of a black wind.
दिशः पर्याकुलाः सर्वास्तिमिरेणेव संवृताः। न ग्रहो नापि नक्षत्रं प्रचकाशे न किंचन
All directions were disturbed, covered as if by darkness; neither planet nor star nor anything else was visible.
अकस्मान्नागरः सर्वो जनो दैन्यमुपागमत्। आहारे वा विहारे वा न कश्चिदकरोन्मनः
Suddenly, all the people of the city were overcome with misery; no one paid attention to food or recreation.
