अपगच्छतु ते दुःखं मा भूर्बाष्पपरिप्लुतः। नहि क्षुभ्यति दुर्धर्षः समुद्रः सरितां पतिः
Let your sorrow depart, do not be overwhelmed with tears; the mighty ocean, lord of rivers, is never disturbed.
नैवाहं राज्यमिच्छामि न सुखं न च मेदिनीम्। नैव सर्वानिमान् कामान् न स्वर्गं न च जीवितुम्
I do not desire the kingdom, nor happiness, nor the earth, nor any of these pleasures, nor heaven, nor even life itself.
त्वामहं सत्यमिच्छामि नानृतं पुरुषर्षभ। प्रत्यक्षं तव सत्येन सुकृतेन च ते शपे
You alone I desire in truth, O best of men, not falsehood; by your truth and virtue, I swear this before you.
न च शक्यं मया तात स्थातुं क्षणमपि प्रभो। स शोकं धारयस्वेमं नहि मेऽस्ति विपर्ययः
Nor is it possible for me, father, to remain even for a moment; bear this grief, for there will be no change in my resolve.
अर्थितो ह्यस्मि कैकेय्या वनं गच्छेति राघव। मया चोक्तं व्रजामीति तत्सत्यमनुपालये
O Rāghava, I have indeed been requested by Kaikeyī to go to the forest, and I replied, 'I will go.' I am now faithfully upholding that truth.
मा चोत्कण्ठां कृथा देव वने रंस्यामहे वयम्। प्रशान्तहरिणाकीर्णे नानाशकुनिनादिते
Do not be anxious, O Lord; we shall enjoy ourselves in the forest, peaceful and filled with gentle deer, resounding with the calls of many birds.
पिता हि दैवतं तात देवतानामपि स्मृतम्। तस्माद् दैवतमित्येव करिष्यामि पितुर्वचः
For, my father is regarded as a deity, even among the gods themselves, O dear one. Therefore, as if it were divine command, I shall carry out my father's word.
चतुर्दशसु वर्षेषु गतेषु नृपसत्तम। पुनर्द्रक्ष्यसि मां प्राप्तं संतापोऽयं विमुच्यताम्
When fourteen years have passed, O best of kings, you will see me returned; let go of this sorrow.
येन संस्तम्भनीयोऽयं सर्वो बाष्पकलो जनः। स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल किमर्थं विक्रियां गतः
You, O tiger among men, who ought to restrain all these tears, why have you yourself succumbed to distress?
पुरं च राष्ट्रं च मही च केवला मया विसृष्टा भरताय दीयताम्। अहं निदेशं भवतोऽनुपालयन् वनं गमिष्यामि चिराय सेवितुम्
The city, the kingdom, and the land itself I relinquish; let them be given to Bharata. I, obeying your command, shall go to the forest to dwell for a long time.
मया विसृष्टां भरतो महीमिमां सशैलखण्डां सपुरोपकाननाम्। शिवासु सीमास्वनुशास्तु केवलं त्वया यदुक्तं नृपते तथास्तु तत्
Let Bharata rule over this land, with its mountains, cities, and groves, which I have relinquished; let him govern well within its auspicious borders. Whatever you have said, O King, so let it be.
न मे तथा पार्थिव धीयते मनो महत्सु कामेषु न चात्मनः प्रिये। यथा निदेशे तव शिष्टसम्मते व्यपैतु दुःखं तव मत्कृतेऽनघ
O King, my mind is not drawn so much to great pleasures or even to what is dear to myself, as it is to carrying out your command, esteemed by the noble. May your sorrow on my account depart, O faultless one.
तदद्य नैवानघ राज्यमव्ययं न सर्वकामान् वसुधां न मैथिलीम्। न चिन्तितं त्वामनृतेन योजयन् वृणीय सत्यं व्रतमस्तु ते तथा
Therefore, O faultless one, today I do not desire the imperishable kingdom, nor the earth with all its enjoyments, nor even Maithilī. I would not choose anything by binding you to falsehood; let truth be your vow.
फलानि मूलानि च भक्षयन् वने गिरींश्च पश्यन् सरितः सरांसि च। वनं प्रविश्यैव विचित्रपादपं सुखी भविष्यामि तवास्तु निर्वृतिः
Living in the forest, eating fruits and roots, seeing the mountains, rivers, and lakes, entering the forest with its wondrous trees, I shall be happy; may you find peace.
एवं स राजा व्यसनाभिपन्न- स्तापेन दुःखेन च पीड्यमानः। आलिङ्ग्य पुत्रं सुविनष्टसंज्ञो भूमिं गतो नैव चिचेष्ट किंचित्
Thus, the king, overwhelmed by calamity and pain, embraced his son, lost consciousness, fell to the ground, and did not move at all.
देव्यः समस्ता रुरुदुः समेता- स्तां वर्जयित्वा नरदेवपत्नीम्। रुदन् सुमन्त्रोऽपि जगाम मूर्च्छां हाहाकृतं तत्र बभूव सर्वम्
All the assembled queens wept, except for the king’s wife Kaikeyī; Sumantra too, weeping, fell into a faint, and everywhere there arose cries of lamentation.

ततो निधूय सहसा शिरो निःश्वस्य चासकृत्। पाणिं पाणौ विनिष्पिष्य दन्तान् कटकटाय्य च
Then, suddenly shaking his head and sighing repeatedly, he ground his hand in his palm and gnashed his teeth.
लोचने कोपसंरक्ते वर्णं पूर्वोचितं जहत्। कोपाभिभूतः सहसा संतापमशुभं गतः
His eyes, bloodshot with anger, lost their usual color; overcome by wrath, he was seized by a terrible distress.
मनः समीक्षमाणश्च सूतो दशरथस्य च। कम्पयन्निव कैकेय्या हृदयं वाक्शरैः शितैः
Observing the king’s mind, the charioteer, with words sharp as arrows, seemed to shake Kaikeyī’s heart.
वाक्यवज्रैरनुपमैर्निर्भिन्दन्निव चाशुभैः। कैकेय्याः सर्वमर्माणि सुमन्त्रः प्रत्यभाषत
With words like thunderbolts, unmatched and harsh, Sumantra spoke as if piercing all the vital points of Kaikeyī.
यस्यास्तव पतिस्त्यक्तो राजा दशरथः स्वयम्। भर्ता सर्वस्य जगतः स्थावरस्य चरस्य च
She for whom you, King Daśaratha, have abandoned your own wife—he who is the lord of all the world, both moving and unmoving.
नह्यकार्यतमं किंचित्तव देवीह विद्यते। पतिघ्नीं त्वामहं मन्ये कुलघ्नीमपि चान्ततः
There is no act here, O Queen, that is more grievous than yours; I consider you a husband-slayer, and ultimately, a destroyer of your lineage.
यन्महेन्द्रमिवाजय्यं दुष्प्रकम्प्यमिवाचलम्। महोदधिमिवाक्षोभ्यं संतापयसि कर्मभिः
By your deeds, you torment one who is like Indra, unconquerable; like a mountain, unshakable; like the great ocean, unperturbed.
मावमंस्था दशरथं भर्तारं वरदं पतिम्। भर्तुरिच्छा हि नारीणां पुत्रकोट्या विशिष्यते
Do not look down upon King Dasharatha, your husband and benefactor; for a husband's wish is for women more important than even a hundred million sons.
यथावयो हि राज्यानि प्राप्नुवन्ति नृपक्षये। इक्ष्वाकुकुलनाथेऽस्मिंस्तं लोपयितुमिच्छसि
Just as, upon the king's death, kingdoms pass according to age, so you wish to deprive the lord of the Ikshvaku line of his due.
राजा भवतु ते पुत्रो भरतः शास्तु मेदिनीम्। वयं तत्र गमिष्यामो यत्र रामो गमिष्यति
Let your son Bharata become king and rule the earth; we will go wherever Rama goes.
न च ते विषये कश्चिद् ब्राह्मणो वस्तुमर्हति। तादृशं त्वममर्यादमद्य कर्म करिष्यसि
No Brahmin should dwell in your realm; today you are about to commit such an unrighteous act.
नूनं सर्वे गमिष्यामो मार्गं रामनिषेवितम्। त्यक्ता या बान्धवैः सर्वैर्ब्राह्मणैः साधुभिः सदा
Surely, we will all follow the path that Rama takes, abandoned by all relatives, Brahmins, and the virtuous.
का प्रीती राज्यलाभेन तव देवि भविष्यति। तादृशं त्वममर्यादं कर्म कर्तुं चिकीर्षसि
What joy will you, O Queen, find in gaining the kingdom, when you are intent on committing such a disgraceful deed?
